Run-N-Gun [Centerfire Biathlon] kit - What do you run?

Any guess to what was causing the failures on the rifle?
Not yet.

It is in the corner until I can get some time to tear it down and play Perry Mason.

It has about 1,200'ish rounds on it with zero issues until Saturday. I entered as an individual Light Fighter but Murphy was with me the whole run!

If I sort it out with an obvious culprit, I will repost here.

------------------------------------------
Only 2 other dumb moves were:

..... running on the wrong side of some flagging tape marking the trail, catching a toe on some T-posts laying in the grass and totally wiping out my white ass.
At the Zombie Team match at the Lucas Oil Ranch in Missouri I hit a t-post that had been cut off about 1" above the ground while running across the edge of pasture along a fence row. It was the 2nd worst fall I think I have taken other than when I was a kid and could absorb those type things. An absolute miracle that neither myself or my weapon was broken because I broke my fall with my rifle.

I banged my head pretty good coming out of the cave in Legion run a few years back. Hat with go pro on and thought I cleared the top. Nope. That hurt like a sob. Planning on going to the Lucas Range in October and hoping that Lead Farm still has 2 guns going this year but haven't seen them post any.

I actually did that as well. I'm not sure many people made it out of that cave without hitting their head the first time they ever did it.

I did the Third Coast Tactical run and gun last weekend also. This match was an oddity and they were partnered with a .22/rimfire org so day 1 was either rimfire or center fire (pistol caliber or a combination with rimfire and centerfire pistol caliber). Day 2 they had a rimfire only competition on Sunday. Each stage is themed with Texas veterans.

Lessons Learned:
1. Pay attention to the weather-temperatures was 34F and rainy.
Both firearms had optics which was severely impacted by the rain. I struggled greatly with water on my optics to see the targets! So much so that I DNF'd a couple of stages. I probably should have looked at something that helps remove water from optics (I thought my microfiber towel would work but all it did was smear it and make things worse, it was like trying to look through a fishbowl to see a target).
2. Check, check and triple check your gear! On stage three when I was moving to get behind a barricade I accidentally (not very hard) hit the barricade with my magazine which blew my Kriss magazine extension apart and dumped 35 rounds all over the ground (it shouldn't have done that, I probably hadn't seated it properly last time I cleaned it). Luckily I had enough ammunition that I could make up for the loss or else I would have been royally up the creek without a paddle.
3. If there are any questions about the course, ask!!!! I did a little more than an extra lap because I got confused about the course layout. My time was still good but it could have been even better. I should have paid closer attention to the markings/signs.
4. My cardio was ok, it could have been better (I was coming off of an injury and still going through physical therapy, I was kind of surprised my ankle held together for this). I need to do more sprint work.
5. I bring WAY TOO MUCH crap!!!!! I had to keep reminding myself that "it is only 3 miles, I do this with my dog all the time" or at least all the time before I tweaked my ankle. I am torn on this one because it is better to have and not need versus need and not have.
6. I had some cramping issues in the beginning of the course (stage 1). I have no idea what that was about, it was the first time I have ever experienced something like that. I am guessing it was because of the cold? We were outside waiting to start our match and had been outside getting our gear ready at 34F. Any ideas?
7. I now throw like a girl (had shoulder surgery from a torn labrum that had a lot of complications) when trying to throw the grenade bodies. Add in a little older now and I have bi-lateral shoulder pain/issues aka both my shoulder suck (torn, frayed rotator among other issues like my didn't heal correctly clavicle I broke)!! I look like John McCain when I try to lift my arms up.

Good things to sustain:
1. Backpack! A good, small backpack with spare ammo, magazines, water and maybe some candy depending on the length. It helps to counter balance our natural forward lean while carrying a firearm and running (or a jog for some of us).
2. Spare ammunition (stripped out of the packages). I had to reload magazines while on the course and being able to grab two handfuls of ammunition from my backpack when I completed a stage was helpful. It allowed me to reload magazines while I was running which saved me a lot of time (I put the two handfuls of ammunition in a pocket that I could get to easily while running and pull out ammunition as needed).
3. Good retention holster, nobody wants to loose a pistol while running.
4. Good battle belt, something that have good magazine retention and rides comfortably on the hip.
5. Weight, I had relatively lightweight gear. I had enough layers to remain comfortable but not too hot and not overly heavy. I didn't need any fluids throughout the course.

I am all for thoughts/recommendations.

Just a couple of quick thoughts.

You mean injuries aren’t common SOP for run n guns?? 🤣

Registration for the 17 South Sweat’n’Bullets Run’n’Gun opens May first. It’s going to be a beautiful hot summer this August in Savannah.

Who all is doing it this year?
I’ll probably be running an AK for this one.

They have a “heavy metal” class this year.
308 rifle and 45 pistol.
This is the way!

I was shooting a 6.5 Grendel at an event a few years ago. I knocked targets over on at least 2 stages. Hope they have the targets squared away or their ROs are going to be PISSED…

At Midnight Madness in March there was a stage with steel out at like 150 yards , across a ravine. Guy a few spots it front of me shot a flasher off one. The RO had to go out there and try to fix it, under NODS. I got a good 17 minute rest and he got fucking smoked running up and down wooded hills in the dark. God bless the volunteers that allows us to do this shit.

So I have Hunters Moon 10k coming up in a few weeks. Kinda torn on what to bring. Just found out they have 3" Keen Eye Targets on each stage for bonus points and debating bringing my 14.5" lightweight BCM with 1-6 Razor or my 16" Green Mountian medium barrel with Viper 2-10. Shots will be out to 600ish yds and 3" targets out to 150 yds. The 16" is a little bit of a weight increase and round count will be 120+ rifle and same for pistol. So I will be hauling some ammo. Planning on 1.5x ammo needed roughly. I am a good shot and don't plan on slinging ammo till the par runs out. Have been doing lots of leg cardio and rucking. I think I can get it done with the lighter shorter rig just trying to not gas myself out and slow down too much.

We shoot these from 3-20 yards almost every match. Some matches, we’ve had these 2-3” target at 100. This has been doable with the MOA reticle in a G3 vortex, on 10x.

These being bonus targets, you’re in a tough spot. Are they going to be worth the weight and time penalty?

At the end of the day, I run with whatever I have the most trust in, even if in my heart I want to shoot another rifle.

3" target will be worth it if I can find them fast enough. Unpainted steel worth a 10% deduction off stage par time. This is more of a hunter style match so less cardboard hosing and more steel with limited shot followups. Going to be my first one there and have done several Legion runs and Lead Farm runs. Lead Farm you spend more time trying to figure out the course through the woods as most of their arrows or ribbons have fallen down and the trails criss-cross all over each other. Going to weight myself with both and then adjust my weight vest to see how bad they are.

Just checked what a 3" target would look like through my Razor in Strelok. The reticle looks pretty thick for the target at 150 yds. May just have to man up and use the 16" with PST 2-10.

On one of the Legion 10ks I added an extra mile or more on because I didn't see the arrow for where to go after the cave stage. We leaned our rifles up against an above ground colvert pipe and as I was getting geared back up, the arrow was behind me. I took off. Got to a different stage and the guys are like "You shouldn't have got here from that direction." Had to trun around a go back. Passed the RO from the stage I messed up and he tells me "You need a compass mate." Got my cardio in on that day. Caught up with a buddy that started after me so we just stuck together. We were both pretty gassed.

Last midnight madness I wanted to be hard and run without my headlamp. I ran right past the sign for stage two and when I got close to stage three and saw the sign I had to turn around and run all the way back. Silly shit….

If you’re gonna be dumb, you better be tough 😊

Having shot my Gen 2 Razor 1-6x out to 800 yards (not very successfully I might add), I'd go with the 16", the Viper & the extra weight.

Put the 2-10 on the lighter rifle? I know, i HATE moving shit around after I get my rifle dialed in, but I also HATE extra weight!
Regardless of rifle/scope combo you chose, wishing you luck!

That’s funny, as last month I moved my 1-8 NX8 from my 15.1” RECCe onto my light barrel URGI and dropped to a 5.56RC2 from a 7.62 RC2. It’s like 3# lighter than my Socom barrel URGI with G3 Vortex :)

I have been using a RIS II 14.5”. My first run n gun, used Eotech with a 5x magnifier, the next one was a night vision biathlon so I removed the magnifier and added a LAM and light. Now I have got rid of the Eotech and run a 1-6 Razor with a dot mounted on top and am enjoying the set up way better. Especially on the longer distance engagements.
Really have been thinking about a new handguard something with less weight and bulkiness. Probably will go with the geiselle mk8 13.5”.

I have been playing musical optics lately and really don't have either of them dialed in. Have some AAC 77 gr ordered from Palmetto since it came back in stock. Guess I will see which one shoots it better and go that route.

For the most part at run n guns you aren’t having to be super super precise. I mainly just shoot 55 grain range ammo and have gotten by just fine. I started to carry a 20 round mag of 77s in my pack for some real longer range targets just in case but come to think of it I’ve never had to actually use it 🤣

What part of the country are you competing in? Southeast? Texas/OK? Midwest?

I was wondering the same! I ran afoul of some 600 yard targets...I hit em, but they didn't move, had to dnf that stage. Shockingly, they did have hit indicators on the 400 yard targets, but not the heavy 600 yd ones :/

I have a tendency to get some extra miles in, sadly.

I’ve been in the same situation. Rain started half way through a 10k and I was lucky to have it. (It was damn hot)

Only issue I had was fogging/drops in my shooting glasses. I had to look over them. Had enough water spots on my ACRO that I had to wipe the lenses half way through the pistol section due to multiple red across the sight picture so I was getting on the trigger before I was actually on target.

Goes without saying, dry cloths and shoes. Maybe some warm soup at the car if it’s going to be cold.

Embrace the suck.

I’m wheels up Thursday for a 7–ish K DMR R&G in NC. Kids are going to run it too. Supposed to be 80 and windy with full sun . Good shit.
