My 8 year old can shoot very well from a bench using a bipod and rear bag. But our new deer blind is 7x7 and ive got a arca tripod that Im using in there.

I took him out today to try his rifle on it at 100 yards to see how he did... not so hot. Went from a solid 1" group at 100 to 3-3.5" shooting off the tripod while standing. He kept saying "it keeps moving"

Long story short, he doesnt shoot enough to get good on a tripod. I dont want to risk it on a deer this year since we have some really big bucks hanging around.

Would the field pod help him out with stability?

I think a true 3-3.5” group with an 8 year old standing off a tripod with a hunting rifle is a very solid group.

Just go take a look at some of the kraft drills posted with the standing targets.

I would try a plate and a gamechanger on the tripod before that bog setup.

3-3.5” groups at 100 with an 8 year old is pretty dang good. Most guys in the woods probably can’t shoot much better than that and they manage to kill deer just fine. That field pod will probably not be any better than your tripod. Your better off investing in a quality tripod.

Rifle was a ruger 6.5G, so the trigger isnt as light as he's used to with my other rifles either. I mean, yeah its a dead deer with his groups..

I had a bog deathgrip with a arca plate, but to keep space in the blind, we were trying a small vortex 3lb tripod today since it takes up less room than the bog.

Since I have arca rails on the rifles, I may throw my big plate and gamechanger bag on there and see if that makes it any better for him.

I find that clamping in works great when you have the time to adjust it perfectly. When slightly off target it feels exactly as your kid described. Muscle the gun over then it wants to twist back.
This is worse with lightweight tripods.

A flat plate and a bag makes for a much more solid rest that doesnt fight you when panning or aiming higher or lower.

I think the groups will get smaller with time. Once he used to the tripod. Funny thing is I am steadier on my tripod with a clamp than I am at a bench with a bipod on a towel and arms supported by the bench.

    YMMV.

Shooting accurately while clipped into a tripod is a learned skill, ie adjusting the tension to move the rifle and lock it down again. It is handy to have the rifle captured rather than just resting in a bag+plate too. An 8 yr old is learning everything at once. Also, probably not strong or quick enough to catch a rifle falling off a bag. More practice clipped in will fix this. A cheap light tripod will add risk of everything falling over.

Put him on the tripod for a couple hours with a 22 and a big box bullets….it’ll make a huge difference! My buddy set his little (4yo) daughter up with my deathgrip and a 22 and within a little bit she was whacking pigeons and crows at 50 yards without an issue
