Good Morning,

What sort of accuracy can I expect from an .17HRM?

What range are they typically shot?

Check out this link in my signature. I have some .17 HMR info there as well as some targets you can check out.

I don't really shoot beyond 100 yards anymore. But my best at 50 yards was 5 rounds in .2". At 100 yards it is .46". Both were with a bipod and rear bag. It takes a while for you to find out both how your .17 likes to be held/shot, and also what ammo it likes best. They are kinda picky.

Another good place for info on .17's is Varmint Al's. You can check it out here..

I was getting around 1/4 '' at 50 yards on my good groups using a Savage S.S. bull-barrel. It likes the 20gr. bullets best. They do a number on sandrats also.

I have had three savage hb 17hmrs and they all like 17g vmax. I have heard that all the 17 ammo is made by hornady and then packaged by different coompanies, but my current 17hmr (sav btvs) seems to shoot better with the winchester vmax. I had trouble with the 20gr stuff chambering and mag problems with it. I have more fun with mine at 100-200, but if there are heavy gusts of wind, the bullet will stray quite a bit (more so than the 22lr).

I've been sitting here biting my tongue, trying not to respond in a negative way. Oh well, so much for that. I have a Savage 93 .17, a co-worker has the same rifle, and a few other friends have Marlins and Savages. NONE of them impress me. I have tried for 4 years to get mine to shoot as good or better than a .22lr at 50-100 yards. Dirty barrel, clean barrel, 17 or 20gr loads, free recoil or death grip, it doesn't seem to matter. There is no variety in ammo. My .17 just collects dust in the safe.

If you are sold on the .17, get a Sako Quad, so you have the option to switch the barrel out to something else.

The good ones shoot 1" or less @100 yards (in a dead calm, natch). The CZ 452s have a reputation for most all shooting < 1".

That's a bummer! Send it back to Savage and have them fix it.

FWIW - I just picked up a brand new Savage 93R17GLV (heavy barrel). While sighting in the scope it's already proven to be pretty darn accurate. I hope it gets even better after break-in and a few cleaning.

Re: What accuracy can I expect from an HB .17HRM

Hello,

This was shot with a 1717D at 100 yards prone. Not the tightest group that I've shot with this rifle but still a good group.

Enjoy

Re: What accuracy can I expect from an HB .17HRM

I haven't done a bunch of groups with my Annie 1517, but this weekend, I shot two 5 X 5's that averaged .75 MOA at 110 yards. 3 or 4 out of 10 of those groups were around half MOA. I should note that I bought 3 bricks of ammo that did not work well with my gun... they were all over MOA. Ammo does matter. And by ammo, I mean lot number because all brands are made by CCI, but some lots work better with a given rifle than others.
