I find myself with a tight budget. I'm looking to scope my soon to be new budget rifle with something capable. I demand accurate w/e adjustments and a true zero hold. I'm very interested in the bdc reticles, but a dot or plex would be ok too. I do not want an ir scope at what I'm willing to spend. My favorite scope is a Simmons wide angle... Forget the model name. It's obviously not the best, just my favorite. Point being, I can sacrifice some clarity for a 500 yrd max deer rifle.

I have two questions:
What should I look at for under 150? 4-12 x minimum, 6-y x maximum.
How do you all feel about the pentax gameseeker, or (gasp) Barska?
This coming from a guy who views Leupold minimum. I'm only trying to save myself headaches and money here.
I' ll post some rr's when both arrive.

Re: Budget scopes

Bushnell?

I have a Barska Tactical that worked well and was repeatable for ~4 years...then after an extended trip cased on its side it lost zero and cost me a buck.

Re: Budget scopes

I know it's not in your magnification range but a used 10x40 bushnell tactical elite is your best bet. That little scope is an awesome little hunting/Tactical scope. I would definatly trust it to work everytime all the way out to 1000yards. Great little budget optic.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: Budget scopes

+1 on the bushnell tactical elite 10x. It's a nice scope and can be found in your price range. I've also had good luck with my Mueller APV in that price range. I'd stay away from Barska.

Re: Budget scopes

Bushnell tactical 10x is definitely nice for the money. Had one on Savage .308, it held up with no issues.

Re: Budget scopes

I have had some Barskas and it has been a hit and miss with them. I have one that is on my 300 win mag and is still holding up after 4yrsand its been in some nasty country.

Re: Budget scopes

Yeah, I can't risk a 10x on a possible running doe at 60yrds. My range is smasher between 40yrds, and 375. I need to hit that doe at 60, yet count a rack up to 400.

Bushnell is awesome, I have one on both my .270, and 7mag. I can't buy used... I refuse to kill something through a scope that isn't "mine".
I have a Simmons 3-9 that works for hunting, how are the new models? I've read through reviews and know my options.... I trust the opinion of everyone on this forum. What would you pick and why?

Get over it. You can find good gear at steeply discounted prices, most pieces arent really even "used".

Re: Budget scopes

Also keep an eye out for higher quality scopes which are being replaced with a new model. Within the last year there have been nikon monarchs, vortex vipers, nitrex 2's (higher quality weavers) all at significant discounts because they were being replaced with something else. Often you can find a $3-400 for half price or less.

Re: Budget scopes

Weaver makes some nice scopes. I'd give their lines a look and see if any of them can fit into your budget. I have yet to take mine out to the range but I like what I see so far.

Re: Budget scopes

Weaver and Bushnell TAC Scopes seem to be the Cheapest and the most reliable for the price. I also recommend the Vortex Viper PST but the are a little more.

Re: Budget scopes

There may not be many that agree with me on this scope but here goes. I have a Sightmark 3-9x40 tactical. I think it's called a triple duty or something like that. Tactical turrets and a mil dot reticle. I think they usually run right around a hundred bucks. I saw them on sale at sportsmans wharehouse for like 59 bucks so I thought what the hell, I'll beat the hell out of it and see what happens. When it came I submerged it in the sink for a couple of days, then put it in the freezer for a couple of days. I took it out and threw it across the yard and left it out there for a few days. I've run the turrets all the way up and down several times and the damn thing still works like a charm! It currently sets on my .50 cal muzzle loader, which has terrible recoil with the 150 grains of powder that I shoot in it, and it has performed flawlessly! If I was looking for a cheap hunting scope, I would buy another one.

Your asking way too much out of a sub $150 scope. Your simply not going to get a scope that meets your requirements that will be worth owning for that price. A scope in your price range that has enough magnification to count a rack at 400 yards isn't going to have good enough glass to do it. Either your going to have to change what you NEED or change the price your willing to pay.

The only scope I've used that's worth having in your price range is the new Redfields. I had a 4-12 and still have a 3-9 with the accurange. For the price the glass is good and they hold zero, they don't track perfectly though but if you get the accurange reticle you shouldn't need it to track for sub 400 yard shots.

Your statement about buying used is downright idiotic. Look at the military personnel that kill stuff with optics that aren't theirs. Furthermore it's yours from the time that you purchase it and its delivered to you. If you worried about something used having issues I doubt your taking any more of a gamble than you are with buying some POS $150 scope. Also by buying used you get more scope for your money. You can't be cheap and picky.

Re: Budget scopes

Yes, you are asking way too much for a sub $150 scope. I don't think you will get a decent one in that power range. The only thing that may work for you is the Center Point 4-16's at Walmart and if it doesn't work you can take it back. I had one for a .22 and it tracked well to my surprise, and it worked well. The only complaint I had was the glass quality kind of sucked, but you can't have everything for $70.

That said if you are going to be hunting with this you'd be much much better off to spend your $150 on a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40. You should be able to get one on eBay for around that, and it's the best scope I've used until you step up to the Ziess Conquest. While I prefer the 4.5-14x42 you will be paying a lot more than $150 for one. Used ones got for mid $200's and new ones for $300. With either of these you can also send it to Burris later on and have them put their tactical knobs on them for $80.

I'm not a scope snob by any means, and I've used some Simmons, Tasco's, etc and I've had better luck than most people act like they have online, but they won't do what you are asking. I've got an older Simmons that tracks well, but the newer ones I've had since Bushnell took over didn't track correctly, and the last one I had gave up after 6 shots as it had some large chunk of what looked like a huge paint chip floating around inside of it. It's the first one I've had break, but the others still didn't track well. That said, I've had decent luck with most of them if you plan to just zero them and never touch it again. I also think their quality has gone way downhill since Bushnell took over, and honestly, I've yet to have a Bushnell that impressed me. Their one lower end scope I had that came as a package deal was a total POS. It's glass sucked, it's adjustments took either a few shots to settle in, or you had to beat the crap out of the scope to get them to take, but it at least did hold zero once zeroed. I've had a few of the Elite scopes in different flavors, and while I liked them much better, and they had good glass, I still wasn't impressed and it was obvious they were still a Bushnell imo. The 10x 3200 Elite Tactical did track well, and had decent glass. The 5-15x40 non tactical one I had was equipped with slightly better glass and I thought I'd really like it until I sighted it in and realized that the tracking was way off.

Something that can be easily returned once you discover what's wrong with it.
