Im finally going to start getting accustomed to my 700. Now here is the question/delimma. This is my first long range gun. I know nothing about it. So the next few outings are going to be purely learning and getting to know the gun.

We know the FGMM 168 ( under 600 yrds i think ) and 175 ( 600 and up ) is pretty damn good for factory ammo and for the average joe. But at 17-18 a box, it can be pricey to punch holes. Now dont get me wrong, I'd like to have the equipment as accurate as it can be, and have human error only. But is it worth shooting that ammo for learning and getting used to the rifle?

IS there an alternative ammo that is pretty good here? http://palmettostatearmory.com/308-762-ammo.php

Thanks!

well if you swap you ammo around you ballistics change, i know you know that, if you flip you lots around your ballistics will change, theirs nothing wrong with you useing factory ammo i would get the same lots, burn in your barrel and get a feel for her with the same lot #. then when you think you flying right, look in to hand loading,

so go to your retailer and buy 10-150 of the same lot, (its usually under the flap of the box) but when in the long range game hand loading the way to go, you can be very consistent, and your cold bore shot you'll be accustom to where its going.

o and keep track of every thing. get a dope, or data book

If you haven't sighted it in yet, any quality hunting ammo will do to get you on paper and a bit of trigger time.

Winchester white box can be surprisingly accurate, however, it is not much cheaper than FGMM.

Other low cost loads to consider:

American Eagle 168 OTM

South West run and gun

USA Ammo, a variety of loads here with 155, 168 and 178 AMAX, 168 and 175 SMK's

FGMM is the standard by which to compare. I prefer BHA and SW Ammo because they use win brass which I reload. SWAmmo numbers for their match 175 Smk are almost identical to my 43.5 grs varget load.

You should shoot the same ammo all the time so that you dont have to constantly change your data and scope settings. The cheaper GOOD ammo isnt really that much cheaper. If you look around you can get into reloading pretty cheap.

fdkay is right about American Eagle OTM. My Savage Model 10 fp loves this round and for $17.95 a box I am happy.
