Just bought and installed the STR on my Bushmaster... and I gotta say I'm very happy with the purchase. It was either this, or a B5 SOPMOD. I'm very glad I chose this stock. I really like how snug it fits (had to also install an Armalite mil-spec buffer tube because the Bushy uses a commercial spec), the functionality, and also of course the looks. The cheek weld is smooth, and with the enhanced rubber butt-pad it really is night and day from the OEM stock. During installation the takedown pin spring that comes out when removing the buffer tube got bent, and I had to remove just under 1/8" off of it. I tried getting a replacement from my gunsmith but it was just a hair too large in diameter and still ended up being shorter than the trimmed spring. Using the trimmed spring, I re-assembled. Does anyone know if this will be an issue? A significant amount of the spring was still protruding from the receiver once re-installed.

Also, just wanna put it out there... posted this question on M4Carbine.net earlier. I don't think I will be going back there, not the most friendly of folks...

m4c policy is search first and ask questions if not already answered. Great forum IMO as they don't put up with BS. Great resource for AR's.

Re: New Magpul STR stock, and now a spring question.

It wasn't that I didn't search first, I promptly received a pm from a mod after making my first thread and was accused of "trying to get the last word in" against the mod because I had no idea they merged threads on that forum. Sounds like someone with little man's syndrome to me. I don't need someone to be completely rude when speaking to me, regardless if they're a mod there or not. I'm sure it's got a wealth of info and forums are really for information sharing, networking, and to a much lesser degree social dialogue, but I don't need that. I usually don't let people get to me, but for some reason this person really got under my skin. Oh well. I am glad I have this resource.

Re: New Magpul STR stock, and now a spring question.

Anyways, I don't want this thread to be about M4C.net. Back to the original question.

Re: New Magpul STR stock, and now a spring question.

Are you talking about the takedown pin retainer spring? Or the spring under the buffer retainer? Either way, they are like a dollar on brownells. If you are going to do your own AR work, sooner or later you lose a pin or spring or detent. Spend 10 bucks and order some spares.

I'm assuming you mean the buffer retainer spring, I would replace it.

If it helps you feel better I did the same thing the first time I switched a stock. It's part of the learning curve. Wait till you mess with an ambidextrous safety installation!!

Edited to add...

Just reread the thread, you're talking about the takedown pin retainer spring being long, it is, the detent is still in place, right?

Work the pin in and out and check the tension and see if the pin tries to pop out of the lower. I don't see it causing an issue. My advice is the same, spend a couple bucks in spares and when they arrive, replace it.

Re: New Magpul STR stock, and now a spring question.

As long as it is still doing its only job by keeping enough pressure on the detent to keep the take down pin from coming out then I wouldnt worry about it.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the responses. I tested the takedown pin, you have to apply some pressure, but not as much as before (obviously). I'll take some time and wait for Midway USA to get a BCM Gunfighter charging handle in stock, and then order the springs with it and then replace it when it comes in. I'm taking it to the range for the first time tomorrow since installing the EOTech EXPS3-4, Vortex VMX3, Magpul STR stock, Magpul BAD lever, Midwest Industries Gen 2 drop in two piece hand guard, and Fenix TK15 light. I will post a range report tomorrow, hopefully that spring will hold lol. I'm sure it will.

Re: New Magpul STR stock, and now a spring question.

BTW Scott, love the VMX3. Much better option than the EOTech magnifier IMO. I can't justify ~$500 for one. Just doesn't make sense. Very pleased from just messing around with it.

yea, you should be good to go.. and from the way it sounds, your local gunsmith probably supplied you with a safety detent spring, the one held in by the pistol grip, instead of the spring you needed.. its shorter and fatter.. keep on hand though as that one has a tendency to disappear during change outs too

Thanks buddy. Yeah I just left the range. First time shooting it since I added the sights, stock, and all that. WOW am I impressed with everything. Groups were small and precise with the new sights, overall feel of the rifle was improved drastically by the stock and new handguard too. The stock really shined. Would take it over the SOPMOD any day. Also, my suspicions were confirmed. The Vortex VMX3 is a great magnifier lol.

Re: New Magpul STR stock, and now a spring question.

Oh, and the spring held up lol. Have 2 on the way fr Bushmaster too.
