So I was at Cabellas yesterday looking at scopes for my new 5r in 300 WM. the guy asked if its a long or short throat...I say "huh"! He tries explaining the difference to me and I believe I get it. It's basically where the rifling begins in the breach. The gun is going to my smith this week for break threading ang I'll have him check it out and let me know which one it is.

My question is, what are the ramifications of each type when it comes to ammo choice and accuracy. I believe he mentioned that if it's a long throat I could have accuracy issues with the wrong bullet type. He also referred to this as the lands length.

Any help is much appreciated,
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Long throat vs short throat - 700 300 WM 5r

Most all Remington factory rifles have long throats due to the need to have to work with all types of ammunition. If you were trying to load for your 5R and was trying to touch the lands the bullet would have to be way out in the case. Just get some Federal Gold Medal Match and give it a try. Will it effect your accuracy - no you will not see any difference except for the difference in ammunition that the rifle likes or doesn't like. The 5R's are known for their accuracy so go for it.

I have a 5r in 300wm and I can seat the bullets (190 Bergers) out to the lands. There is not much extra, but the bullet is fully in the neck. A buddy of mine has a 22-250 varmint model which the bullet is not even in the case to touch the lands, so it varies from gun to gun. I have never heard of a 5r that wouldn't shoot so don't worry too much about it. Just use quality ammo.
