I purchased a RCBS primer pocket swager tool. I am wondering is the swager tool supposed to pull out the crimp or just resize it so that you can press in a new primer?

Re: Swager tool for military brass

If it does the same thing as the Dillon, it basically trims out the crimp and makes the pocket open to accept new primers.

Re: Swager tool for military brass

I just got one and have done about 200 cases. There is no metal removed. It just resizes the pocket so you can try to put in another primer. Mine didn't work very well and I'm running them through the crimp remover on the Lyman case prep center as well. Smaller primers (Winchester) seem to work better

Re: Swager tool for military brass

If anyone is looking for one of these, +1 on the Dillon tool. Built like a tank and makes quick work of the crimped pockets.

Re: Swager tool for military brass

The RCBS works extremely well for me, I use it when I get handed once fired Lap brass with crimped primer pockets now and again. Also it comes in handy if I ever need to tighten up a primer pocket. Good bit of kit.

Re: Swager tool for military brass

Can I just use my resizing die to remove the primer?

Usually. Some say that its possible that you're decapping pin will bend/break punching out crimped primers. I've done it and haven't had a problem (thus far). The "right" answer is to get a dedicated decapping die.

Re: Swager tool for military brass

Only times i have broken a decapping pin is with Berdan primed brass

Re: Swager tool for military brass

The RCBS unit forces a hardened steel "punch" into the primer pocket which pushes (swages) the softer brass of the crimp out to a diameter/shape that allows the new primers to be pressed in. I've used one for years. Some of the darm pistol brass I'm picking up now (9mm) has primer pocket crimps, too).

I've broken a few depriming pins. In every case I found a fired primer inside the case (got in there during the brass polishing) or a fired .22 case (that didn't fall out during the handling/polishing.

I see alot of crimped 9mm brass, and I am staring to see alot more crimped 40. Anyone know of an add-on for the Dillon for 40 (like the 45 add-on)? I may go to a machine shop and se what they can make for me.

Re: Swager tool for military brass

$7.00 wood/metal counter sink in a cordless drill or a drill press has worked for me for the past 25 year's.

Re: Swager tool for military brass

The swager pin appears not to be really hardened. I ruined one when the jam nut came loose and let the pin drop down too far and another when (somehow) a stainless polisher got into the brass when swaging. RCBS insisted on sending me two (free) to save on postage, I guess. If anyone has better customer service, I'd be embarrassed to take it...

Re: Swager tool for military brass

The Dillon and RCBS both displace the crimp back into the case. I have both but haven't used the RCBS yet. I bought it then didn't load for a whiole then boguht the Dillon when I started loading again.

You can use a regular sizing die to remove crimped primers. I've used Lee (.45 ACP), RCBS (.308), and Redding (5.56) to deprime crimped primers without problems. Most, 90%+, of my brass is military.

Re: Swager tool for military brass

I used the sizing die on a couple just to try the swage. I just ran the decapping pin down so the brass didn't go in the die because I had not cleaned it yet and didn't want dirty brass in my die. I just bumped it once or twice and it came right out.
