I made a post recently about buying three remington 5-R's. Well, due to the M24 rebuild program, I ended up having to knock it back to 2 so I could afford the M24. I decided on the .223 and .308, both w 20" threaded barrels. Pictures of the rifles are below

Now, on the .308 gun after a close inspection, the exterior layer of the stock has chipped all the way around the heel of the butt where the recoil pad meets the stock. This gun is brand new out of the box! Anyone ever heard of this happening? I don't even see any pieces of the stock in the box. So it didn't happen in shipping, and the store I bought them from said they were stock room rifles, only opened to confirm SN, then closed back up and shipped to my FFL.

I contacted remington via email since they are closed right now, and this way I was able to send pictures. I requested that they just send me a replacement stock which I'll swap out then either return them this stock, or if they want to sell it off I have a friend that would take it. I know it's purely cosmetic and I've seen worse chips on M24's... but that's not the point- my new rifle should be without flaws!

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

Oh and not at all impressed with the X-Mark Pro. I don't have a gauge, but my finger didn't feel a difference

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

That sucks! I ordered one Tuesday and it's being delivered to my dealer tomorrow but I wont be able to pick it up until Monday. I sure hope mine doesn't look like that since I've already sold the stock! If it does, it's definitely going to complicate things!

What's up with the turned down area behind the threading on the bottom rifle? I ordered a .308 and the pics showed it looking like the one on top in your picture.

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

atleast it is not as bad as another member here who bought brand new for a shoot and noticed sling studs were off which threw off his bi-pod

still sucks

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

My sling studs are a touch off as in not straight, but other than that, should be good

As for the turn-down- that's the .223. I don't really know why they did the turn-down; if I had to guess that is turned down the the standard M16A2 diameter so that suppressors that attach to brakes won't have the brake looking obnoxiously under-sized in diameter. But that's just my guess- I'm really not 100% sure why it's like that. Yours, in .308 will look like the other one.

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

LOL @ bolt tripper No it isn't shag carpet. It is fairly plush though- newly installed about 5 months ago

It does look chipped, but it's an odd place to chip due to a drop. The rubber pad should absorb most of the impact. I have no idea on this.

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

when mine came in yesterday, it was dirty as all hell, and when the FFL opened it to confirm the serial number, he showed me the condition of the box interior. the rifle wasn't even packed in the dunnage that keeps it from flopping around. i asked if that was normal and he said, "umm....no." i asked if it was sealed and he said yes.

not very impressed for a $1100 rifle. about 2 weeks ago, another guy had issues with a "NIB" 5R.

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

Happened to my buddy on a new HS precision stock around the trigger guard. HS precision took care of it quickly

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

Well, I'll see what remington says then if that doesn't seem like a good option contact HS

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

Well they weren't responding via email very fast so I called- they are requiring me to send the whole rifle in. Talk about a pain in the ass. And it seems as though it will be done at my expense- WTF?

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

Don't do it. When I had issues with mine they sent me a prepaid shipping label. It's their problem, don't pay them to fix it.

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

they said I'll get two emails, so I'll wait on the second email before I start making phone calls

She doesn't chew on stuff she's not supposed to- learned her lesson with some hot sauce on a few of the things she started chewing on as a pup

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

Yea as lennyo3034 stated above, I had this happen to my HS stock right at the trigger guard. I called Stockey's where I bought the stock and they said there was nothing they could do. I sent it back to HS and they took care of it for me. The customer service there is top notch if you don't feel like dealing with Remington. For me they filled in the chip, sanded, and repainted the whole stock for me.

I tried that technique with my dogs, trying to teach them counter-surfing was bad. Didn't work.

Colt snatched the habanero-laced bait off the counter, Kimber saw him get something that looked good and tried to steal it. They fought over it and managed to get habanero into their eyes as they shook the bait all crazy like. You might think that'd teach em, but no.

Sniping them with a (lowish power) airsoft gun when in the act of counter-surfing only taught them to check more closely that the coast was clear.

Smart dogs...

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

Turbo- WOW... what a nightmare!!

Drake- thanks but out of my budget right now. Maybe when my disability starts I'll pick one up for .300 WM.

Everyone else- Got a shipping label in my email today; packaged it all up and it's out the door tomorrow. 2-3 weeks later I SHOULD get MY rifle back with a new stock.

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

I got a 5R a couple months back because it was the best I could afford. Jammed 3 times in my first match. Turns out the follower spring was upside down. Good rifle, bad QC. Shame...

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

Remington QC has gone down the drain, but they should make it right.

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

Yeah I was a bit surprised it would arrive like this- I'm pretty sure the 5R's are some of the most expensive bolt guns remington sells which aren't part of their rem-defense department. You would think they would leave the factory in perfect shape!

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

I just bought one of the 10th anniv. models and though I don't notice any damage to my stock like on the OP's the action and barrel in mine run crooked down the fore grip of the stock. There is a large difference in the gap on one side of the barrel to the other.

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

If it makes you feel any better, my new 5R came with a small crack/scratch on the fore end of the stock too. I contacted Remington about it, and didn't really hear back from them. Then about 3 weeks later a package arrived at my house containing a brand new stock. I'm sure Remington will replace it for you.

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

UPDATE: Remington took the rifle back via prepaid shipping.

Got a reply the next day saying they'd just send me a replacement stock and I could keep the old one. My integrity however wouldn't allow them to send me a new stock under the SN of the .308 while the defective stock that came on the .308 is going back to remington right now on the .223.

So there you have it, Problem will be fixed, and if I would have waited on the email response, I would have even ended up with a spare stock. Now I learned, have just a little bit more patience. Would have been better to wait it out on the email side instead of calling in. Oh well, all that really matters is I'm fixed up.

Think they'd notice trip wires? Sounds like your perimeter could use some work lol.

Re: Stock defect on brand new Rem 5-R?

Yup, 20" and threaded in .223 and .308. 24" and threaded in .300WM
