I had read really good results with the 155 Scenars but while waiting for them to arrive I picked up a box of SMK 155 Palma's locally and I was suprised by the results as I have read many threads stating that people didn't get good results from these.

I loaded up two loads both with an OAL of 2.75"

First load was 43.0gr of RE 15, this grouped at 1" at an average 2767fps. The next load was 44.0gr. of IMR 4064 with an avergare 2943fps. These grouped really well at 1/2" or less. Apparently this bullet likes to move.

I was curious who else is having good results with this bullet?

I was also curious has anyone had extensive time running either the 155 Scenar or SMK over 2900fps, and if so what was these barrel life?

I'm running these on a Schneider M40 1/11 twist barrel.

And for those having good results, what barrels make, twist, and loads are you using?

Re: Good resultss with .308 155gr SMK Palma

Are these the 2156's or 2155's?

Shot 155 Nosler CC's (2155 clones) from a 12-twist barrel ~2900fps. Throat lasted about 4500rds, then it became an unpredictable 1moa rifle. Spun on another barrel GTG.

Sending the 2156 @ 2925 out of a 24" bartlein tight bore via 8208xbr and Tula 7.62 primers. Very accurate. I'd be shooting these bullets if I didn't switch to .260 for my match rifle.

These bullets love to jump quite a ways, and a tip of my hat to _9h for the advice on jumping them.

Re: Good resultss with .308 155gr SMK Palma

The lighter bullet has less bearing surface therefore prolongs barrel life versus the heavies with long bearing surfaces.

You left out what case and primer you are using, but with Lapua cases and CCI primers you have a ways to go on increasing the powder charge before you run into pressure problems.

I run them with 46.5 of a moderate speed lot of RL15 at about 3040 FPS out of a 30" tube.

Good to hear that others are having good results.

Sorry for the lack of details.

They are the 2155 155gr's

CCI BR-2 primers

Using Federal brass because I have a lot of it. I'm building up my Lapua brass slowly.

They shot very well out of my factory FN, it has since been sold and I plan to load what I have left for my Garand for cheap plinkers.

I have to disagree with you. The gliding metal used in bullet jackets has miniscule impact on barrel wear. The primary component determining barrel life is the heat and pressure from the burning powder. The heat and pressure from the burning powder erodes the steel beginning at the throat, rifling lands and washes out the Sulphur in 416SST. If caught early enough, a barrel can be setback and rechambered, to shoot well for a while longer. Generally speaking, shooting lighter bullets faster, requires burning more powder, which results in shorter barrel life, than shooting heavier bullets slower. Your rate of fire, length of shot string and how hot you let your barrel is going to have an impact on barrel life too.

I've had excellent luck with this load in a M700 SPS-V 26". Haven't moved on to playing with seating depths yet. I'm also interested in trying the 2156's.

155gr SMK (2155)
43.5gr RL-15
Winchester brass
Federal 210M or Wolf primers
2.005" trim
2.775" COAL

Re: Good resultss with .308 155gr SMK Palma

I shot 155 Palma's several years ago but haven't used them in a while. Recently I bought a couple new boxes and noticed Sierra had made some changes. So here's my dumb question of the day. Whats the difference in 2155's and 2156's ?

Re: Good resultss with .308 155gr SMK Palma

The 2156s are the newer Palma bullet with a higher ballistic coefficient. Both are 155gr but I believe the 2156 is designed to have more bearing surface. There is a brief article on them here.
