Hi guys, came here in search of some answers so I appreciate any help you can give me!

Building my first bolt gun, haven't had one since my 700 when I was in high school. Debating between 308 and 338, either edge or lapua. (I shoot my gas 308's out to 800 regularly otherwise I wouldn't be considering a jump right into 338) and also had questions about a few other things.
First : action, is a 700 police fine or do I really need to invest in a custom like a surgeon or defiance?
Second : barrel, is it ok to just stick with the factory 338 barrel until I shoot it out or am I going to be unhappy with the accuracy I get out of it?
Third : stocks, I was originally going to go either manners t4a or aics ax, but then I came across these and thought they might be worth a look: http://masterclassstocks.com/stocks.html.

I already have my glass, I ordered a schmidt and bender 5-25 PMII with P4F reticle and CCW DT turrets mil/mil. I bought this because I'm a huge S&B fan already from the short dot I own (eagerly awaiting the 1-8 for my 17s), and my objective for this gun is 1K+ shooting on 18"x18" steel targets.

After the glass I have $2500 left for the build this month, and I plan to sock away another $1500 out of next months paycheck. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ETA: ** Also wanted to note I don't do any shooting from a bench, all prone with bipod, and I may want to use this gun to hunt with so I'm trying to keep total weight below 20 pounds!

With your budget in mind, I would just get an AI or TRG and call it good.

If you want to be different, you can have an edge or .338 Norma Mag built. Both are excellent rounds and can be built on a Rem action.

The cheapest ones I see now are around 3000, where is the 2500 option?

If you already have .308 gas guns, then step it up and go .338. The Lapua is going to be supported more, commercially, than the Edge or Norma, but they are all great rounds. +1 look for a used deal on a TRG 42.
