so obvious i'm mad i didn't think of it first. great idea!

Re: Totally awesome barreling and action truing system

What's the cost on that outfit? Pretty slick. Good job.

Re: Totally awesome barreling and action truing system

Great stuff Nate. Very ingenious. Regards, Paul.

Re: Totally awesome barreling and action truing system

You say "4-6 week production runs". Does that mean orders placed today would be 4-6 weeks out for shipping, or is the first run in stock and ready to ship and when it's gone it's 4-6 weeks until the next group is ready?

Re: Totally awesome barreling and action truing system

Great job!!! I really like what I saw in the videos, and if I were still in the business, I would be first in line. As a hobbiest, I will order one down the line as I really like working with the best possible tools. Again, congrats, and great job on bringing us another awesome tool.

Re: Totally awesome barreling and action truing system

A clever design, nicely done. The extra degree of freedom that provides is just what the doctor ordered to quickly (and accurately) indicate actions and barrels. I imagine a full time smith could amortize the cost pretty quickly in time saved.

Re: Totally awesome barreling and action truing system

Man I love watching these videos! I am not a machinist (a trim carpenter by trade), but I have a lot of respect for the precision work you guys turn out!

True Bore Alignment System

I've seen one in use (at SSG) and was so impressed with the capability it has to hold work stress free.
IMO -they are state of the art and a must have for holding/chucking totally stress free, as is so desired in gunsmithing for barreling and action truing.
Thanks SSG for the innovation !!!!

Re: True Bore Alignment System

Can't wait to get home and check this out!

Re: True Bore Alignment System

That looks to be a very well thought out system to tram in an action or barrel. If I did chambering or trued Remmy actions I would have to have it. Holding an action without inducing stress. Being able to hold your work securely in a 6 jaw chuck. Not having to work with a special short spindle lathe with a spider on the out board end. This looks to be an awesome product. Looks like I'm talking myself into spending more money.

Put me on the list. I'll take one.

Re: True Bore Alignment System

(I Don't normally post on any boards) We were Nate's first customer on the Tru-bore alignment system. We've been using it for a month now. We've tried every system out there from spidering to floating reamer holders etc. This is head and shoulders above the rest... Nothing else even comes close to the precision and accuracy attainable with this product. It's worth a lot more than the asking price (We actually just received our second one last week). Thanks Nate, your product solves so many of the problems we encounter trying to put out the most accurate rifles/barrels for our customers.

Re: True Bore Alignment System

After reading some posts on Benchrest central and here, It has to feel good getting some big endorsements from some of the big names in the accuracy game....congrats you deserve it!

Re: True Bore Alignment System

All I know is Nate did one of the first RSR Surgeons for me and it is an absolute lazer with flawless metal work.

Re: True Bore Alignment System

How does this system hold the bolt? It's not going to fit in the collet chuck or the 6 jaw. Not trying to pick a fight, just asking a question.

The machined parts are way sexy. Very nice.

Actually now that I think about it. It does look kinda like something I saw mounted vertical in someones mill. But I think Nate has really done a nice job refining it for the lathe.

Re: Totally awesome barreling and action truing system

in my head, i had been toying with the jack screw idea and a set-tru style back plate but was hung up on keeping it centered and safe. the ball and socket idea never popped into my head until i saw the video. after seeing it, it's so obvious. i have a good feeling he will be selling quite a few of these to accuracy minded rifle builders. i really can't find any flaw with the idea.

again, great idea nate!

You could use a 4jaw, build some split collets to fit the body, use a short spider, a 1/2" slid in the back and a center......just gotta get creative.

I don't think its just gun nuts that will be interested in this. I am looking for a buy on a six jaw right now so I can justify one.

I agree, it solves all sorts of workholding problems and does it with a minimum of effort to boot. I'd also been toying around with various ideas for modifying set-tru backplates and 16C collets and a bunch of other ideas and it was all going to be a PITA to develop, expensive, and questionably effective. I'm all for building my own solutions to things, but this is one case where I'm quite happy to just buy a fully developed solution.

Great job Nate, I'm going to show the owner of the machine shop I work at. There are a number of parts we run where we could use this. SPM

JimT,
There are many ways to go about it. The way I mostly do it here at the shop is require that the handle be removed and reattached for proper timing. I also offer a threaded handle as part of this option. There have been times though that I have needed to true a bolt that did not have a removable handle. Currently I have a 2" shaft that I milled a "V" in and holds the bolt in front of the chuck.("V" block style) This one can only handle bolts that are fairly near .70. I have been working on a jig, but will be a little while before it is available that will be a split block so basically a 2" shaft with a 1" hole through it, then you will use another split bushing for your different diameter bolts 1" outside bolt diameter inside. This will be slipped over the bolt, the two inch shaft will be counter bored by the handle, then milled so the handle can come out the side in the counter bored portion of the sleeve. This block will be around 2-2-1/2 inches in length, then you will chuck this in the 6-jaw chuck 3 jaws on each half of the split bushing. The handle will escape between two jaws. I
am just in the designing stage of this one for the many different style bolts and handles. so there are many ways to be creative and one could build many different jigs to hold your part rigid in this system. The system just gives the ability to make angular and rotation adjustments while holding your part rigid. Hope this is somewhat understandable. I always struggle with capturing an idea in words, But again 99% of the bolts I true I remove the handle. I realize though that this is unattractive for some.......

All the best,
Nate

Ron,
Thanks for the kind works. I'm sure glad the True Bore Alignment System is all that you had hoped.

Hey, hope to see you guys at Kettle Falls this year!!

SPM,
Yes, I have used the true Bore Alignment System for much more than barrels and actions.for instance I built a spindle extension, so on the out board spindle there is a sleeve that bolts to the spindle on my TL1, so I removed this sleeve, pressed in an extension, tigged it on, then I chucked the sleeve, turned the outside of the extension and bored a hole through the extension. I then bolted it back to the outboard spindle, then set my indicator on the extension to check run out. I was getting accumulative run out as I moved further out on the extension this meant I had an angular error. meaning the face of the sleeve which was bolted to the spindle was not perfectly 90 degrees to my spindle extension. So I chucked the spindle extension in the True Bore Alignment System, got 2 points on the extension running near perfect, faced the sleeve that bolted to the spindle, then bolted it back onto the TL1 and Yeehaw! it's running right on!!!

Re: True Bore Alignment System

Thanks for the reply. Which 6 jaw do you use with this system?

Also, will it work with an 8 inch 6 jaw chuck, or that to big of a chuck? I'm interested in one if it can hold the 8 inch chuck I have.

I have these set up for a Bison 6" (6-1/4") 6-jaw chuck or the Gator 6-1/4" 6-jaw all steel which is a copy of the Bison. but really any chuck under 6-1/4" could be mounted on this system. I just ship them set up for Bison or Gator.

STR,
No, your 8" won't work with this system as the chuck must fit inside the angular adjustment bolt pattern to allow access and unless I see a huge demand for it, I most likely won't be making a system that works with the 8" chuck.... thanks for your interest though,
