Need suggestions on glasses

I'm looking for clear and super dark safety glasses to replace the ones I'm using now. I would rather them not look like goofy shooting glasses and I don't want to spend the money on super expensive Rudy type glasses. There has to be something in the middle... Isn't there? I'm using Smith sunglasses right now but I'm not sure what kind of protection they offer from a real impact. Anyone know?

Thanks

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

Tacticalrx.com has been used by my shooting partner to good success. I will get some custom shooting glasses from them in the next few months.

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

I have a pair of Oakley prescription sunglasses that are supposedly ANSI rated for impact. Not sure how true that is, but I love them. Fit well and don't move while I'm running. I bought the frames from an Oakley outlet store here and then had lenscrafters order the prescription inserts.

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

I sent my prescription to Oakley and they sent me a pair of sunglasses with their lenses matched to my prescription. According to them they are impact resistant and that's what I use for shooting and when I ride the motorcycle.

They are not cheap though as I had to pay full price for the sunglasses and I had to pay for another set of lenses.

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

Depending on where you are your company may provide prescription safety glasses. My company bought me two pair of rudy, one clear and one sunglasses (over a two year period) i really love them and they have the replaceable lenses

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

Try Pyromex Venture II

They are about $4 a pair (for clear) and the polarized ones are SUPER dark

Same here. If you know which frames you like, you can usually find them new for about 50-80 dollars less without lenses on ebay.

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

If you don't need a prescription and don't want to spend the money for oakleys, try going to prax air and check out some nemesis glasses. I/O shades are tinted, they also have dark, #3 and #5 shades if you want really dark and don't mind a green tint

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

I have seen oakleys blown up, shrapnel didn't make it through the lenses to the wearer. I won't wear anything but. But you need to get the impact resistant ones, not sure if regular oaks would run as well.

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

Thanks for all the replies! I would have never thought of going through an optometrist to pay for them with my HSA for a tax deduction. Good news about the Oakleys standing up to blasts.

Almost all Oakleys that I've tried on touch my eye lashes and it drives me nuts. Besides plucking my eye lashes anyone have any suggestion for models that may have more clearance between your face and the glasses?

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

I have long eyelashes too and big cheeks making finding sunglasses for shooting a real pain! I found that the oakley radars were perfect ( there are a few lens styles and i cant recall which lens i got but it allows my cheeks not to interfere with the lenses. I have a clear lens and a yellow lens. I love them.

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

If your needing rx lenses, check out trivex material instead of the usual polycarb stuff. Trivex is lighter, thinner than cr39 and much better optically than poly. I wear both clear and something called drivewear that is a photo sensitive polarized lens. I also have a pair of kenon polarized fishing glasses made from trivex that kick ass.

Good news... I'll have to go try them on. Looking them up I fine the following...

Radar Range

Radar Path

Radar Pitch

Any idea what the difference is and did you try them all on?

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

Well, this probably shouldn't be my first reply on this site but here goes!

I own a small Optical shop in Bakersfield Ca. and we sell A LOT of prescription safety glasses. Our preference is Wiley-X. They make a great product that is Z.87 certified and many of their frames hold prescription lenses very, very well. I'm a huuuuuuuuuuuuge Oakley fan and have been for years but Wiley-X has them beat hands down in the ability to properly hold a prescription lens, especially when the prescription gets a bit difficult.

Seeing as this my first post on here I know I have zero credibility but if you've got any questions regarding putting an Rx in a frame I'd be happy to offer my advice.

Its so funny how small the world is. Here I am in Colorado and you post this... I used to live in the SW of Bakersfield and work for Golden Empire Air Rescue as a Flight Medic, before Hall Ambulance bought them out. That was some of the most fun work I ever did. It's amazing how much stupid shit people do in the Central Valley and how bad the car wrecks are on Hwy 99 and I5 are. Makes you wonder how anyone gets anywhere around there alive. Colorado is totally different. We don't get many accidents at all. And we don't get any shootings unless the police shoot someone... People were getting shot around the Central Valley ALL the time. As also worked as a ground medic for them and didn't seem like I could go a whole shift without getting a stabbing or shooting around the East Side of the city.

I'll see if I can friend you on the site so I can come back later when I have questions about properly fitting prescriptions to the frames.

Yup, small world. Ugh, Hall has bought up pretty much everything. How do you spell monopoly?

I live in the NW and our shop is actually in Oildale. Talk about going downhill... Ugh. So far you can still avoid the 'really bad areas' pretty easily but it's not a good direction it's going. It sucks to watch. Colorodo sounds great!!

Sure, I'd be happy to help out in anyway I can. Don't hesitate to ask.

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

My unit paid for my Oakley Straight Jacket frames with prescription transition lenses from SportRX. We do alot of flying and shooting in the helicopters and they are the best frames and lenses. You can go with straight gray 3 lenses which are the darkest but the transition lenses go to gray 2 which is plenty dark.

Almost 100% positive they were path lenses.only difference between the styles is their dimensions since so many different head and face sizes exist. I did try them all on, we have full blown oakley stores around me here in scottsdale/tempe. Oakleys website lets you customize them, in any combo you like, its really cool. I actually ordered them from my eye doc as my insurance picked uparound half the tab even though they were not prescription.

Avoid wiley-x if u have long lashes. They should be called fog-x's sincethey fog upsodamn fast in my experience

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

Oakleys, it took me forever to find a pair that fit but once they did, there perfect go to the Oakley store and try some one

Anyone ever heard of Numa Ballistic Eyewear?

https://numaoptics.com/ </div></div>

Havent heard of them. But if they are ballistically rated and comfortable for your dome, then give em a shot!

One thing important for me is actually not blocking too much light. Thats why i like the yellow and clear oakleys since they let over 90% of light through. My eyes arent that light sensitive, so i dont see a reason to make it any harder to resolve a tiny plate 700 yds away through my scope by reducing light transmission. It pains me to put a piece of plastic between my eye and a $2,000 optic as the plastic lens is the weak link in the chain, but it would pain me worse to smell a seeing eye dogs ass for the rest of my life.

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

Like some one else said check out ess. They are top of the line. I have tried them and will be purchasing a pair shortly.

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

I just followed up to a Glasses for Prone thread and might as well plug here, as well.

I love the Oakley Juliets. Got prescription lenses before heading to the sandbox, and it was one of the best uses of my money to date.

Lost a bet with the ocean as to whether or not I would lose them in the surf. Just got my second pair in.

Metal frame with rubber joints holds up incredibly well. I've had multiple plastic oakley frames break on me. They have fewer color options with prescription, but fire iridium is sick enough for me.

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

Okay, so get this... Went to the mall today and tried on a bunch of Oakleys, they didn't have the once suggest above and I didn't like the fit of any of them. So I wandered though Dick's Sporting Goods to see what they had in sport eyewear. And in the baseball section I ended up trying these dumb things on...

They actually fit, they have side coverage, they don't touch my cheeks or my eyelashes. WTF? They look pretty good optically speaking, they don't control glare real well. They have "Shatter Proof" lenses. I nabbed a pair to try them out. $21 out the door. We will see. Most glasses I have only last a few months anyways so at least I didn't spend much.

I'll keep looking for the Oakleys that were suggested to try on but these will hold me over till then.

If anyone needs a 40% discount code for ESS eyewear drop me a PM

Good deal, if the shoe fits wear it, so to speak. Im curious to find out about the radars once u try em on

Re: Need suggestions on glasses

I use various forms of ess glasses. I have settled on ESS Suppressors. The area where you would wear muffs is flat so after a long day with ear pro on it doesn't squish that into the side of your dome. Ultra comfortable. Clear, smoke and yellow lenses cover just about any situation.

That is a kick ass design. Those cheap ones I bought above were killing my head after 10 mins with muffs on the other day. Had to switch to just plugs because that's all I brought to the range. I'm gonna have to try these out. Basically you get two complete pairs for $130? Not to bad...
