Swedish Mauser, 30" Kreiger varmint barrel, built on a remmy 700 action. Just needs decent glass, but it's ready for the range!

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

Swedish Mauser= 6.5x55

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

Usually Swedish Mauser is referring to the 1896's built in Sweden. I was wondering how it could both be a Swedish Mauser and a Remmy 700. I get it now. 6.5X55 is a goldilocks cartridge. Not too long, not too short. I wish they made a goldilocks action that was not too long, not too short.

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

Looks awesome!!! I'd mount a different scope to fully explore the loooong range capability of the 6.5x55.

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

Beautiful stock. Really, really dig the stock - and a sweet cartridge choice, too.

6 months was waiting for the barrel, the rest was squirreling away money for each of the subsequent purchases in the process

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

I thought I had patience...good on you. Hopefully it was worth the wait. It is a great looking rifle. Ya' dun' good, lad!

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

Can we get some details on the stock. Very nice rifle and intersting cartridge choice. Nice to see rifles chambered for other than the 308

6.5x55 SM is hugely under appreciated by Americans. Fantastic cartridge that IS what a 260 SHOULD be...

OP: what did you do for the boltface?

If you stick with winchester brass, you don't really have to do anything as Winchester Swede brass has a .473 rim, The original 30.06 bolt face was .473 so smithy said he 'touched it less than a gnat's behind' to allow for a tight norma fit ( which is .479) but also fine for winchester.

Ans yes, the round is very underapreciated here in the US. I first fell in love with it shooting my old swede mauser a few years ago. Federal offers some new SM so maybe it's "catching on" after only about 100 years.

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

I think we need to flute the bolt to dress it up a little. I know someone who can do it. Regards, Paul.

show us some range results looks great!

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

Nice.

6.5X55 is one of my favorite cartridges & I love my Swede Mausers, but I've been wanting to build something like that for several years, just haven't gotten around to it.

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

just some questions and observations. i agree 24 better but it's your build. can make a 24 out of a 30 not a 24 into a 30. what twist? great stock. a total scratch build? what donor action caliber? different bolt face from 308. only rem 6.5 is the hugely expensive commerative of 10 or so years ago. weight of rifle,no optics? i assume you hand load to commit to an "uncommon" caliber. i would say that,if you just want a baseline,i can't recommend fiocchi extrema or exacta too highly. my T3 just loves both. privi also ain't too bad.

1:8 twist.
Not sure what you mean by total scratch build. I took an action from a new 30.06 ADL, bought the barrel, stock, BDL conversion and smith labor, then channeled the stock out myself for the barrel. I have a full write up on my blog: http://www.wjowsa.com/thingsthatgobang/building-a-remington-700-in-6-5x55-swedish-mauser-part-2/

I do not hand load, but there is a local commercial company that does reloads and will do them ala carte for any caliber if you provide the brass. I have used them for my 7.5x55 and they always do good work.

Bolt face for a 30.06 is nearly perfect for the ranges of commercial brass out there with a very little hint of work needed on the bolt for the larger rimmed Norma brass. According to the smithy, to be ably to tightly fit the .479 rim of the norma Brass, very little needed to be done.

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

It's cute that you think it's done

They are never done.

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

One of the best looking rifles I've ever seen. Congradulations.

Re: Took 2.25 years but my longe range rig is done

Have shot the 6.5x55 for a long time. Nice rig, good round, have shot many whitetail with it. Enjoy....
