Glock 19 with night sights.
They are simple, accurate, controllable, affordable, and rugged. The G19 also has relatively high capacity (15 rounds).
If you have small children you will probably also want a lockable box with either biometric locks or a simple and quick code lock, and probably a device to mount this box somewhere where you can get to it in the middle of the night (like a bedside nightstand).

You shoot them and decide what caliber and frame is best for you.

I perfer a 40 or 45 for home defense simply for the stopping power. You dont want to have any doubt the intruder is down and out when hit. I personally have a full size smith and wesson m and p 40 on my side of the bed and my wife has a glock 19 in her night stand. Whatever you decide make sure you can work it blind folded. Pulling a trigger on an empty chamber could get you killed.

Like I tell everyone I teach. Never buy a gun for home or personal defense, buy a gun because you enjoy shooting and want to make it part of your lifestyle and as a benifit let it protect your home and person as well... Otherwise you are on a one way street to an accidental or negligent discharge. This is 2012 there are tons of good options for home defense besides a firearm and most of them come lawsuite free.
I defend my home with a single stack 45 acp but Ive also spent years practicing and not once a month either at least once a week.

#3 do you have any physical limitations?
#4 I will not train anyone who has misdemeanor for domestic violence or any felonies, we do a live scan before acceptance to any training class. Is there any reason you feel that would be an issue?
These are pretty basic, but tells me the trainer, what I have to deal with in regards to skillset, attitude and background.
Then I go from there. There is a basic blueplan for those souls that plan on hitting the range twice a year or so. - kframe.38
Then there those that get that twinkle in the eye, and end up selling all their stuff to but that - H&K or 1911.
either way my only purpose in life when training these folks is keep them alive when fight or flight kicks in the back door at odarkthirty.

While I love my P229 the gun for the home, if I can get to it, is the 870 12g with 00.

I will give a little bit of background on me so everyone knows a lot about me and the reason I am posting this topic. I am a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where I served as an avionics technician and martial arts instructor. I have also shot mostly rifles from the m16 to the .50 cal. I am mostly a rifle man as I can hit the wings off of a fly at 200 yards, but this is basically something that I want to get for adaptability to all shooters in the house. I have had training in the Marine Corps as well as in other formal schools. I am good with handguns and I love the feel and power of the glock 19, but I have been leaning toward the taurus lately. I love all the input that you guys have given me. Me and my girlfriend shoot at least once a week at our local range and are looking for clubs to join as well. All the input is well appreciated.

before I had a child I thought the best home defense handgun was the most powerful one I could shoot accurately. After having a child I realize that over-penetration is a serious side-effect from a .357mag.
I now load my 357 with 38 specials and if time permits I would grab the 12 gauge loaded with bird shot. Even with the 38 special loads I wouldn't want to fire a shot in any direction that would possibly be in the same area as my son's room. I would rather take on an intruder via hand to hand combat than risk a stray bullet going into his room.
Do the research. Even a 9mm will go through walls. Drywall and insulation do little to stop any modern centerfire bullet.

Second knowing that you practice often is excellent, find a good defense load you like and your gun likes (If its your glock it should eat most anything) and go with it.

40 is what I shoot in my Model 22. Full frame, cheaper ammo, does the job quite well, fits my hand like a glove, and is insanely reliable.

In that case, go with a Glock 19... That is seriously my favorite Glock. I've owned the 21, 17, 22, 36 and the 19.... that is one of the best guns for the money hands down. 9mm is super affordable and very comfortable to shoot. Don't buy taurus, they are awful.
Guns in that price range I would consider,

Springfield XD
Ruger 1911 (if you can find one, I doubt it)
Ruger GP100- I know it's a revolver and not as neat but you will get way better at trigger control by shooting that double action
Ruger SR series (my experience is very limited with this but I did really like it)

HK USP (Honestly I like Glocks better)
Sig Sauer- P220, P225, P228, P229 (All fantastic)
Springfield 1911s (they are all nice, be advised though the range master, or Mil-spec will not feed hollow points)

I work p/t at a gun store that also rents for range use(inhouse) I have seen more Taurus firearms get sent in for warranty than any other. Now, Taurus has a lifetime warranty which is essentially unquestioned, but it's there for a reason - you'll NEED IT!!!
If you said it was just a plinking gun, no worries, you give up your recreational shooting for a month or two, and resume when firearm is returned. If it goes "crack" instead of "bang" when needed, NOT cool!!!
Get a firearm(with compromise since two users) that fits, both of you can function, and both of you can "fix" and what I mean by that is malfunction clears, reloads, etc.
Brands in no particular order that I would steer your towards: Beretta, Glock, Smith & Wesson, HK, Sig Sauer, Springfield Armory, CZ. Get one that fits your needs and caliber desires and go practice like there's no tomorrow.
Just my $.02. Keep us posted!

I'm <span style="font-weight: bold">NOT</span> debating or arguing with you, and no my feelings are not hurt. I'm just curious why you mention avoiding the older S&W autos at all costs? I've had good luck with S&W 39, 459, 4506, 659 in the past. I think they have a great trigger reset. The DA trigger isn't stellar, but not like it has you miss the target.
I would agree in the sense that some of the alloy framed models could crack if heavy loads were consistently fired.
Just curious is all.

I would recommend a good double action revolver such as a S&W 686. The revolver is simple, reliable, and you don't have to worry about screwing with safeties and such in the middle of the night. You just pick it up and pull the trigger.

I like the Glock 19. But, the CZ line is good. Revolvers are great for people that may have to use the gun that aren't into guns.

Glock45, not bagging on smiths but ive had problems with three different guns a 5903, 5906, and a sigma. Nothing bad just inconsistant accuracy, not even bad accuracy just for whatever reason I couldnt get them to group the way i wanted. The 5903 had me convinced i could only shoot revolvers and sigs well. Because revolvers and sigs were the only compairisons i had access to at the the time. I eventually tested the 5903 and 5906 on a ransom rest and realized it really wasnt me. The sigma just gave me too many malfunctions. Scared me away from anything until the M&Ps.

I just went and played with the glock 31 gen 4 and I like the feel. I got the full size cause the short barrel didnt feel well in the hands and had my pinky finger without a grip. Not a biggie I could get an extender, but that full size had me going. My girlfriend is getting her the smith and wesson sd. Cant remember the model number but it comes in a home defense kit and it is a 9mm.

Good to keep 2-3 snubby .38s in various areas around house.
For instance I keep one in master shitter, kitchen and tv room.
Can keep loaded for years, pick it up and squeeze trigger, hear 5 load bangs.
simple, fumble proof and always there when you need it.
My main house pistol is a 220 which i change out loaded mags monthly.
hell, i even keep a stainless .22 mag mini revolver in the soap dish in shower.
but then again, i am how you say;
Good to keep 2-3 snubby .38s in various areas around house.
For instance I keep one in master shitter, kitchen and tv room.
Can keep loaded for years, pick it up and squeeze trigger, hear 5 load bangs.

Sarge, no worries at all. I always try to craft my questions carefully on these forums. You appear to have your own very reasonable reasons to not care for S&W's. I certainly have gun brands I don't care for too. Is it because those brands are bad brands? NOPE! They just don't fit me and how I shoot is all.
What is awesome however is we have a WONDERFUL array of firearms from which to choose!!

There are positives and negatives to having a handgun for home defense. While it's better than having a 300 win mag (my first home defense weapon- simply because it's what I had). Handguns can also be a liability in an apartment situation, If you shoot the "bad guy" and the wound is through and through or if you miss. There is the possibility of hurting/killing innocent people. Remember, you are accountable for every round that leaves the muzzle of that weapon. The positive side of a pistol is it is easy to maneuver in tight quarters compared to a shotgun or AR. The positive side of the shotgun is when properly choked down even 7 1/5 bird shot can be pretty damn devastating 7 feet away but energy gets dissipated quickly in things like drywall and building materials.
With proper training and dedication any weapon system with proper ammo can be effective if you can put rounds on target. That being said, I would suggest something like a glock 22. Simple, reliable and a great price point for what you get. Even if you live at home alone like myself a safe is a great investment and a small safe with finger keys can be easily opened in darkness. Whatever you do, if you own one. Get to the range and practice shooting. Get out and shoot a USPSA / IDPA match and get a feel for how things work in a more dynamic situation than just shooting bullseyes all day.

Lots of good information here. Whatever gun you choose, make sure you take the time to completely familiarize yourself with it and take it to the range as frequently as possible. The ammunition you use for home defense is as important as the gun. My gun of choice is a Nighthawk T-3 and Hornady Z-Max 185 gr. bullets.

+1 for those who say whatever you can shoot well. I started out with a 9mm Sig Pro, and thought I was getting pretty comfortable with the gun. Eventually I got a .38 snubby as a carry gun, and ended up practicing with it so much that my skill with it greatly outweighs my skill with the semiauto. Now the .38 is my go-to gun for both carry and HD.

I carry my HK USP Compact .357sig on me everywhere I go and to bed every night.
I have Trijicons on it and it's my go-to weapon of choice!
I believe I have Hornady Critical Defense in it now.

I like my Sig 229 Elite Dark (different grips than other 229s + night sights).
I would suggest a gun with either an external safety or a DA/SA trigger due to the fact that your fingers could accidentally grab the trigger when trying to fish it out of your night stand or from underneath your bed in the dark.
Other than that - whatever you shoot the best. Ask around your range and people may let you try their guns if you ask - I know people at my range usually do. That is how I landed with Sig - because I did not shoot my Beretta 92fs very well at all (worst DA/SA trigger system but never had a malfunction in the 2k rounds I shot before I sold it).

This is my ideal HD handgun. This is it in the HD configuration. It's also my EDC, so it just has a regular 15rnd mag in it and no TLR-1 when it leaves the house.

To add to this I did a rough round count and I believe the gun has somewhere in the ballpark of 3000 rounds of all types through it without 1 malfunction. The beaver tail grips on my model do let my thumbs touch the mag release and sometimes the slide doesn't lock on the last round. This is operator error and not a malfunction.
