My cousin was going through some ammo left from my great uncle and we've come across a couple dozen loose rounds and we're not sure of the caliber. So hopefully you guys can give us an idea of what it is.

In the pictures its the cartridge on the right, there's a 168 gr. 308 on the left in both pictures.

The round in question has a 'green' primer. The headstamp reads: 1940 // F A M M A P

It's slightly larger in diameter than a 308 case with a slightly longer cartridge and a shallower neck. The bullet is cannulered soft point.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: identify this round

7.7x58 Arisaka? Dimensions would help if you have a caliper handy.

The green around the primer is nothing more than a sealant.

Doesn't the Swiss have a funky rim that is kind of trimmed and not square?

Re: identify this round

Not quite sure what you mean by trimmed and not square...

Here's a picture of a 7.5 swiss in FN brass produced in the 1960's using the same style of soft point smooth cannelure bullet next to a Winchester .308:

Re: identify this round

I thought it had a kind of chamfered edge.

Fourth from the left is the Swiss. The rim has kind of a sharp edge at the point the extractor catches compared to the edge that you look at when looking at the primer.

Re: identify this round

Doesn't look like any GP11 I've ever used...

FAMMAP stands for "Fábrica Argentina Militar de Munición de Armas Portátiles" and I don't believe the've ever produced 7.5x55. I'd say the OP's mystery round is a 7.65 Argentine Mauser.

Re: identify this round

You know...looking at it you may be right. Comparing it very closely to my FN 7.5swiss rounds, I believe the case is straighter and slightly thinner on the round he posted. I'd never checked the 7.65 argentine rounds against the 7.5 swiss rounds. They actually look pretty similar and their dimensions are relatively close overall.

This man is correct.

Re: identify this round

Unrelated- what is the 3rd round from the left on the pic that Mechanic posted? Strange looking round

Re: identify this round

I have 2 boxes and from the looks of it yea its a 7.65 AG in fact I have a box of brass that has the same headstamp that was shot from my 7.65 AG.

It's an French 8mm Lebel.

I have a French Lebel rifle that one of our family members was issued in the Foreign Legion.

Hey guys sorry it's taken me so long to respond back. I compared the round to an 8mm and it smaller i can submit pictures of that if it would help?

As far as the 7.65 argentine mauser..... That it is not. We actualy have a 1891 7.65 Argentine Mauser produced in Berlin. And the mystery round doesn't chamber. Not even close. So any more thoughts of what it could be? If i had a set of calipers i'd measure it. Might see if i can find a pair.

It'll be a week or two but i'll try to take a picture of the mystery round compared to some 7.65 arg. ammo we have on hand. i thought the mystery rounds would be for the mauser too but she won't chamber.

Here is a 7.65 Arg

The neck on his round almost looks more 30-06'ish??

Bringing up a old ass thread. But can anyone identify. I’ve tried googling but so far no luck.
