I live on Whidbey Island and while I have had a Remington 700 SPS Tactical for some time, I now have the time and resources to start utilizing it.

I have been lurking here for some time and didn't want to jump in because a lot of times new people get jumped on for asking previously asked questions, in other forums. So, I have tried to glean as much much information as I can, from previous post. If I asked a question that has been talked to death, I apologize in advance, since I will try to research previous posts as much as possible before wasting time or space.

As far as shooting experience, I have not been in the military but did grow up in a Navy family. I, and my entire family, are members of Front Sight and try to go down 2 times a year, or more if work and finances allow it. Most of my experience is with handguns but I do have a working knowledge of precision rifles and can shoot 1/2 - 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards or between 1 and 2 inch groups at 200 yards. My sportsman's club only has a 200 yard range so I don't know how I would fair out past the 200 yard mark. Now give me a black rifle and I can make it sing...or so I like to think.

Currently, I am trying to improve my Remington 700 SPS Tactical and am open to suggestions. It is a .308 with 1 in 12 twist (I wish it was 1 in 10 but when I bought it, I didn't know the significance), it has a Warne 20 MOA one piece base under a Falcon Menace 4-14x44 scope with Burris Tactical Rings. I have a Bell and Carlson Medalist Tactical A5 stock on order to replace the Hogue over-molded stock that came with it. I am researching Detachable Base Systems and Marty suggested the Seekings or CDI and I will definitely take a long look at them before making an investment.

I was given an Sniper Data Book from Storm Tactical and have been logging every shot I have taken, while working up load data. Currently, I have been working up loads for Hornady 168gr AMax and Match HPBT and just got my hands on two boxes of Nosler 175gr HPBT Competition bullets. Where I live 308 168gr bullets are rare and the 175gr I bought today are the first I have seen since summer. I don't know how they will shoot with my 1 in 12 twist but I am hopeful.

As far as gear goes, I would rather buy something once than mess around trying to be cheap and end up spending twice as much in the long run.

From what I understand, my current rifle is at most a 600 yard gun (if I am wrong, please let me know) and my ultimate goal is to be able to shoot in some tactical competitions. I don't know of any except over in Wenatchee but would be open to hearing about others.

I look forward to learning and developing my long range skills and will bookmark this forum! </div></div>

Welcome!

With the new stock & 175's you will be happy as you move to 600 and beyond.

Also I am extremely happy with the CDI bottom metal and the inletting that they did with my B&C stock. Great work and turn around time.

Definitely get a new stock. I got the Whiskey 3 Chassis and like that one.

ditto, +1, whatever it is, I have two of them. Great stock for the money.

Look at a DBM (detachable box magazine) system. Don't limit yourself or your gun to 600.

Re: SHWW Group

Wow! What a welcome!

I shot my first 175gr Nosler Competition HPBT's today and wanted to see if I can pull them off with a 1 in 12 twist.

Average velocity was 2563 and shot a 1/2" group at 100yards. According to my ballistic calculator on my phone (using Shooter App) it shows an ending velocity at 1000 yards of 1176 and still supersonic (using current Density Altitude).

So to me, it looks like my rifle can handle the 175's. Thoughts?

On a side note...how many of you are going over the Wenatchee on the 24th and 25? I looked at the match site and think it would be a complete blast. Maybe next year...

John- There's a number of folks using 155's/175's/178's out to 1K and beyond with factory barrels. Click on the link below to take you to the .308 section in the reloading depot. I switched from 168's to 178's recently, and my results have improved at 700+ yards, but the steering of said loads is still a work in progress.

1/2 inch is a great place to start! : ) Supersonic to 1K with 1/2 MOA may well be a great place to stop as well. I've been shooting .308 out to 700 yards for awhile now, getting 1/3 moa out of the Georgia Ammo bulk match .308 in my DPMS rifles.

group1.jpg

I've decided I don't have enough going on in my life (inside joke) so I'm going to start competing, which means I'm now building a .308 bolt action. I haven't had a chance to see if the Georgia runs as well in it as the DPMSes - I'm praying for that miracle but assuming that I'm going to need to cook up some rounds. Here's that gun so far:

10187.jpg

Pushing the heaviest Berger I can for the cal was a winning strategy for 260Remi and 300WSM so I'm thinking of going that route for .308 with the Berger 185s for 1K and also cooking up an SMK 155 Palma round as well.

Does anyone here run 4831SC in their .308? I started using it in the 300WSM and after trying two other powders more common to the 260 I found a great round for using that. So I'm wondering if it's worth trying on the .308.

I'm going. It will be, erm, an interesting and dynamic experience for me! If my .308 isn't behaving well yet I'll run the 260.

1/3 MOA at 700 yards sounds excellent, especially from factory ammo.

According to my handy ballistics calculator pushing a 168gr AMAX at 2673 I should stay supersonic past 1000 but I have always heard that the 175gr bullets performed much more consistently at the longer ranges. Let me know how 185's work and good luck with the build. The rifle looks great so far.

Re: SHWW Group

These matches in Eastern Washington, what courses of fire are there? From what distances? What's the round count? .... etc.

I've never been to a competition and would like to try in the near future. I have someone helping work out all the dope for my reloads.

But, since my back and knees are all messed up, I can't be running and gunning.

Pretty vague question there. Matches vary from 50 rounds for the NCWGC monthly matches, to 150 for the Findlay Cup. There are people of all shapes/sizes/abilities shooting these so don't worry.

Sorry to hear it, Chad.

I will always remember him using a good size rock (about the size of a youth league football) as a chew toy. Made me nervous when he stared at my Chevy Metro as if he wanted to play "fetch". No Drogo, my front bumper might be plastic but its not for teething ...

Re: SHWW Group

On a happier note, I got bored with pounding the 1000 yard boulder at the range so I switched to the 1250 yard (approximately) boulder instead. Those little 140 grain Bergers and 144 grain Lapuas can be a bitch to see the strikes at that distance, but since I was just fire forming brass with moderate loads, I was/am very happy with the consistancy. The 6.5-280 Ackley Improved has such longer legs than the standard 260 Remington.
