Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I am curious. What's the general experience users have had with the SCAR rifles? 16 & 17? I have seen them for a few years and honestly....never paid them much mind.

To me "not standard" to an AR, looks weird, and straight up appears to be a pig and unweidly. You know....OH GREAT...another 14lb rifle all the Xbox'er think is cool. Pardon me while I vomit since I am the one actually carrying it.

Well....I had a chance to play with a SCAR 16 in private. And tell you what...I was pretty impressed. Really, really impressed. Folding stock, fully adjustable comb and LOP, ambi-controls (minus bolt release), BUIS included, sling-points included, center rail so I can keep a light with no off-set (off-hand cornering), chrome lined barrel that is user switchable to different lengths, side-charging handle (ambi). And it's a ground-up piston system for those so inclined. SBR it to a 12" barrel and I would think it's perfect.

I have intentionally avoided these types of systems since there are so many fads. But I was so intrigued after playtime I got on the net and started researching the SCAR 16-17. You know...ACTUALLY paying attention.

I think I am really getting it. And all the modularity for the SOCOM / SEAL guys seems fantastic (config, barrels, stocks, grenade launcher.

What's the word on the street with users here? I know about the decision concerning the 16 with SOCOM but keeping the 17. I think that was just spending money wisely. My point is I don't look at this decision, good or bad, as anything other than short-game.

What do the gray-beards around here think? Well...maybe the salt-n-pepper beards who actually hump rifles.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I really like mine a lot. I think the platform really shines in short barrel suppressed setup where an AR may or may not have gassing issues. This rifle has only been shot 3000 or so rounds, but it has never experienced a malfunction of any sort and its only been cleaned twice. I really like the ergonomics also.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

Thanks for the reply and the pic. I just realized...are these not that common on the market? I just have been seeing them for a while at SHOTs and on the net. I just ASS-U-MEed a lot of people have experience with them?

I did searches and can't find hardly anything on SH.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I really like mine as well. The only thing I dont like is the trigger. Going from my NM or SSA-E triggers there is a noticeable difference. Havent changed it out cause of the cost factor. I am also thinking about getting its twin but in black if I can find one.

Turn around time was unreal fast.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I like mine very much! It took a while before I clicked with the rifle but once I did it became the 5.56 I shoot fastest and most accuratly.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

Thanks for the replies, Guys. A few questions for those so inclined:

1. What is the street price on the Gisselle (?) drop in triggers?

2. Cost of having someone tune a trigger?

3. What's the availability of barrels? Either FN or aftermarket? Is it vaperware?

4. I have seen a referece to a rail extension for them. And I have seen some "sniper-style" stocks available. What else is there options wise?

5. I was at the LWRC booth at SHOT and looked at their IC rifle. Seemed cool. I liked the thinness of the for-end. What is the latest with the military and replacing the M4? How does the SCAR fall in that? Does the fact SOCOM is buying the SCAR 17/Heavy give it an edge? Anymore of an edge than the USMC buying the 416? Just trying to see the future.

6. What's up with this SSR variant I read about? What kind of accuracy are they getting out of it? (CRANE spec?)

Greyson

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

1- the G trigger is around $450, from memory.

2- Springfields work was around $80, including return shipping.

3- FN announced barrels at shot. I think cost was estimated around $800-$900.

4- Extended rails are available. So are AR stock adapters. I don't use either as I find the factory stock to be perfect and I don't need the weight of the extended rails.

5- I think they decided that overall it was a solution looking for a problem. In the grand scheme, the m4 fits the bill and they don't really have the budget to replace it.

6- the SSR (mk20 I believe) is the SCAR version of the mk11 mod 0. I can't comment on the accuracy as I have not shot it or talked to anyone who has shot it.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

As far as the SF community goes it doesn't look like the 16 will be picked up. It just doesn't do anything that the M4 can't. The 17 is getting picked up in some quantity though as it provides 7.62 punch in a small package which no other weapon provides for us.

Biggest complaints on the platform I have seen/heard are the non-reciprocating charging handle (I don't mind it but a lot do) and the ergonomics. It may feel fine to some but for people with many years of experience with the M4 platform it feels foreign.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

Kinda my thoughts. As for the 16 being picked up, to take Stoner platforms out of service? No way. But if they are already running the 17, and M4s are wearing out. Not so suddenly the 16 might be in their long term future. Assuming they stay with 5.56.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I've not much love for the Light, however the Heavy does bring something different to the table. And just fyi, the 17 EATS optics. Keep that in mind.

How do you know this?

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I have the 16 and 17 and they are fabulous performing weapons. Low maintenance and eat all the ammo I put in them.

I would be very curious to hear the follow-up on this as well. Do you know, or have you heard, of any particular optics that are getting broken on the 17?

This isn't a gotcha question. If there is even an unsubstantiated rumor, I would like to hear it. I am open to all data-points.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I am a member on the FN board, and I do not recall a single thread about an optic going down.

Same here..

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I own one, and like it. I do not like the reciprocating charging handle. It took a long time for me to get used to not having my thumb that high up. With all my M4s, i keep my thumb a bit high, for ease of accessing the bolt release. Cannot do that with this rifle. oh and its loud as $%@#! even with 105 earplugs in

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

anyone really ran some good ammo thru em? what kind of groups are you guys getting out of em? I was thinking of doing a 17 as a DMR but just not seeing many range reports on em... any thoughts

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

As you can probably tell, Im a fan. Ive had the 16s since the first batch of non-collector rifles came out that didnt carry a price tag of $7k on gunbroker, the 17s I recently purchased and am still working on submitting the form 1, picking a 7.62 can, an optic, mags, and a way to carry it all.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I own a 16s and am very disappointed in the trigger. One would thing for a $3000 MSLP they would supply a trigger that doesn't fell like it going over rough gritty sandpaper. Of all the AR's I own, and I own quite a few, it has the worst trigger

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I just picked up a SCAR 16 I love it..I posted on it earlier this week in a thread called SCAR vs ACR posted pic of a target shot with it and the rifle itself...People complain about the trigger I don't think its as bad as what you would think takes getting used to but it was intended to be a battle trigger...Recoil impulse is ultra smooth stays on target and is a pleasure to shoot..I did not like them when I first looked at them but after handling and using one I now fear this one will multiply in the darkness of my safe...

I have a Scar 17s and getting 1 moa at 100 yards with Federal match 168 grain. I think that's good for me. Plus I am only using a 1-4 scope. If I had something stronger I feel I could get 1/2 moa.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I've tried to convince myself to get into this platform but cannot invest in a rifle that doesn't outperform other options. I'd rather run a built AR lower, with a match trigger, and PWS piston upper at half the cost of a 16. The 17 is a different story. Can't compare a DI .308 to a piston .308 but at 1/3 the cost of the 17 the current .308 offerings are still pretty damn attractive. I'll throw my cash at optics, ammo and range time until the cost comes down.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I love my Scar 17s. I have other AR platforms already. Plus I love that when I go to the range there is not anyone with one there.

Re: Experience with SCAR 16 & 17?

I just picked up my SCAR 17 the other day and I love it shoots and feels great. I changed the grip to a Houge Grip but as you can see requires some mods but I bought a PSG-1 style grip should be here monday

. I have shot out to 100 so far with this setup and 1inch MOA easy and I havent shot a 308 or a SCAR ever so its nice. Wife loves it as well I cant really thing of any downside to the gun totaly modular can work for a lefty like me or a righty. Can't Wait to get my CAN on it should be bad A$$. The only thing that sucks is mags are 30 to 50 bucks when you can find them but gun is great.
