.338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

I'm contemplating what all to build with when I do start a build (hopefully by the end of the year). What did you build, and why did you choose the particular pieces you did?
So far I was thinking I'd go for a surgeon action, a McMillan stock and a Gaillard barrel, but I know there are a lot of good actions out there.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

I went with DTA because I only need one scope for 308, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 338LM. But, your expected setup will be nice!

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

I also went with DTA. One scope / one platform for my long range rifles. I also like that it is nearly a foot shorter than a standard bolt action rifle when equipped with the same length barrels. It also balances very well.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

Let see, build #1 was a Stiller TAC338 action with a 27" Bartlein 9.3 twist fluted MTU contour barrel in a McRee TMAG folder.

Build #2 is a Stiller TAC338 action with a 24" Bartlein 9.3 twist MTU contour barrel in an AICS 2.0 chassis.

Build #3 is a Stiller TAC338 action with a 25" Bartlein 9.5 twist MTU contour fluted barrel also going in to an AICS 2.0

Been happy, obviously, with Stiller actions and Bartlein barrels. I suspect if you get enough replies you will see about as many different combinations as you would hope for..making all of this clear as mud.

You will end up with a nice 338LM with the components you listed in your post too so have fun, building one the way you want it is rewarding.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

Cega,

Do any of your bottom metals support CIP or longer length cartridges? Any recommendation for less expensive stocks?

Hope I'm not hijacking the thread,
DocB

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

Sako TRG42, NEAR Brake, Premier 5-25:

The TRG is a fairly inexpensive way into a 338, and are very fine rifles.

Oh, yeah I'm with Turbo, the TRG is a nice rifle as well.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

I bought a Savage 110 FCP HS Precision after having a custom built last year. The Savage is better than 1/2 MOA and I saved $2,800 by not having another custom built.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

Barrett 98B with 27"fluted, 338P-1 TBAC suppressor, Vortex 5-20x50 Razor scope. sending off 300 gr. Scenars

DocB,

The McRee was non-CIP though Scott can and does make a CIP center section. The AICS are CIP length.

Hope that helps, PM me if you have any other questions.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

Savage 110FCP HS, Vortex PST scope, Harris Bipod, Bedded action, Rifle basics trigger 2lbs, 250 grain HSM.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

I went the DTA route as well....hard to beat. Any 338 is a good start though...

Google: SRS DTA

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

I went the 338 DTA route too.

Original thread.

DTA 338

Note the FDE one in the picture has since been made into a Covert and the green one functions as my 338 platform.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

I am running a Remington 700P MLR. Got it for less than $1100 and it is more accurate than I am. Put a Leupold 6.5-20x50mm PSR with TMR reticle on it in a Spuhr 34mm Ideal Scope Mount System on a Leupold 15 MOA tactical base and a Atlas Bi-Pod. So far I am really happy with but have found that this is just the tip of the iceburg as far as cost goes.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

Sako TRG-42
Near 25moa base
American Rifle Company 4th Gen rings

Very similar to what I had planned... but I won't be installing a muzzlebrake

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

Mine is similar to PGS's rifle. Gap, Surgeon, Mike Rock, A-5 with KMW hardware and Badger FTE brake topped off with a Nightforce. Building another on a Badger M2008 and AICS stock CIP length. I just have to wait my 10 day waiting period here in Cali before I can get my action and send it off to GAP.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

At the risk of sounding like a HS-P fanboy...

HS-Precision HTR, 27" bbl, McCann MIRS, Nightforce rings, Leup MK4 8-32X.

That said, lots of good setups already posted.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

Plain black TRG42 with Near 45min base and Brake. Been running a Mark4 lrpr but my new nightforce is on the way, be here tuesday. I was looking into a custom but i went with the TRG because i could get it right then no wait. I can't see how anything can shoot much better. Lapua brass 91gr H4831sc 250 Scenars. I do have to say if you are going to shoot 300gr you might go with a custom with the Seekins Bottom metal. They give about 3.99 OAL. You got to cram those bergers way down in there to go mag length on the TRG. i have found the 250's do all I need around here.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

OP:

No muzzlebrake???

Suppressor? Or are you just ten times the man my mother was!!??!!

The other day at the range, my partner and I were such bitches neither one of us was willing to touch off a single 300smk@2800 without the brake...for $10!

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

Surgeon XL repeater (uses surgeon dbm with cip mags), Broughton 9.3 5C finished at 27", APA fat bastard (best and loudest in the business), Manners t4, Jewell, Nightforce, LRA bipod.
Considering seekins dbm and rechambering to an Allen Xpress.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

TRG 42 .338
Factory muzzle break
Factory bipod
Spuhr mount
SWFA 5x20HD

Twenty shots of 300g SMKs with a max load and I don't think I need to see number 21. Recoil on a max load is not cool. I'll be switching to 250s and lighter solids in the future for anything short of 2000.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

Ax338
Spuhr
Premiere 5-25
Atlas bipod
AAC Titan qd waiting on form 4
Custom loads by Dallas reloads

I haven't tried the OEM brake, but ny NEAR is great. GREAT! Noticeably less recoil than my buddys 338, that weighs 8lb more than mine, with an APA Fat Bastard.

The 250 scenar BC is pathetic. My 284 with 162amax can quite easily shoot inside of a 338 running 250s.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

GAP built on a Templar action 26" Bartlein barrel with Badger FTE brake Manners T4A with Badger M5 bottom metal Badger rings and 20 MOA base holding a 5-25 x 56 S &B with P4F retical. It shoot better than i am capable of.

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

TRG42 in tan, Leupold MK4 6.5-20 with locking turretts, M5, with Horus H58 reticle, 34mm tube,, Leupold rings

Lapua 300 Grain Scenars. Lapua Brass, Fed Match Mag Primers, N570 powder

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

I am a HS fanboy. My HTR shoots half minute. I had it in my hands 5 days after deciding to get a 338LM. Only $3350.

Brother I paid 2600.00 for my TRG42 and it shoots even better than that. My only complaint is TRG Mags cost a stupid amount

Had a HS Precision and it was my best buy before I basically stole the TRG. HS is a great weapon as well. I like the HS for hunting ebcause its super light and handles way fast. I like the TRG better for extreme range though

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

I went the Barrett 98B with NXS 5.5-22

Re: .338 Lapua shooters, what's your setup

Well for the custom path it seems that a surgeon is a great pick...
Given that I plan this rifle on mostly being a range queen, what sort of barrel length and contour would you guys suggest?
