I want to get a McMillan A4 or A5 , do you have get a different bottom plate, is there a reason to do a badger? I want a bolt from tubb but it's expensive. Ptg sells one but they ask to specify OD and I don't know what the heck to put. Then there's the recoil lug tapered or not? Do I need one?. I'm also planing to get a new trigger any suggestions? Please help.. I'm new to this and always wanted a bolt action and now I can play around with one. Sorry if anybody gets disgusted by noob question or equipment choices.

the MCM will have to be bedded for your barreled action. You dont have to get different bottom metal. but if you want the detachable their are several others that use the badger footprint like APA. Leave your bolt alond unless you are just wanting to piss away money on things you don't need. The recoil lug you dont need unless you are doing a barrel and if you do that you might as well get the action trued and then get the bolt. I would go with a Timney 510 trigger.

Heres a better question what is your budget?

Here is what I did on my 5R, but again you have to have a budget in mind because so of these are more beneficial than others.

Manners T4 with minichassis and DBM
NIghtforce 20MOA Base
Nightforce UL rings
Nightforce 5.5-22x56 NP-R1
Timney 510
RWS Brake
Tac bolt knob
PPR bolt fluting

I will rebarrel it and true the action when the time comes.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

New Stock, Good Glass, Bipod, Sling, Go shoot. Spend your money on ammo.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

Stock nothing over 900, I would be happy with a M40a1 with adjustable cheek but that's a 3 month wait or more . I have a problem with instant gratification so I was settling of an A5 adjustable cheek for 851 in gap camo. As for extras I wouldn't wanna spend no more then 600 I think. If I don't get a bolt I would like a different bolt knob something tactical any suggestions? For scope I have a wonders optics wotac 4.5-14x44 on the way

I dont know anything about that optic, but the rule is you will more than likely spend as much or more on glass.

so you have 1500 to spend

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

What's the BDL option on a stock? Would do you recommend?

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

You already have a BDL, it is the hinged floorplate that came with your rifle.
Add about 250 to your cost for a Mcmillan stock for bedding.

In my opinion, you would be better off spending less on the stock and more on glass.

B&C fully adjustable stock:

KRG Bolt Lift:

Personally, I'd return the Wonders and take that money and the money saved on the stock and bolt lift and put it into a weaver 3-15 ffp tactical scope.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

Look to the right side of the web page.
See the google custom search engine?
Type in wonders optics

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

you would be better off with a 10x fixed SWFA SS over that wonders.... I got scared for you after I saw what a simple search brings up.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

You also may want to just get a non adj. MCM and save the little bit.

I would do the stock, trigger, and good glass.... the rest of it is mearly a asthetic thing. Run the factory BDL for now until you get more cash and have the stock inletted for the bottom metal later.

Buying a pricey scope is hard... trust me a wife that just finished college (with no loans) and a mortgage and everything else that goes with it the last thing you want to really do is unass a bundle of cash...

The old saying buy once cry once.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

Yea guess I'll cancel that order . I had ordered because it was 50/50 on reviews and I wanted to support a small company. Kinda feel bad canceling now ha. Thanks fr advice.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

What do you think about the falcon menace optics

I have seen a few use them here but haven't had any first hand looks at them. Look at Vortex Optics their Viper line is pretty nice for the price. I had a Viper PST that I sold to get my nightforce and it was real nice for the price.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

Pretty damn nice looking for sure and you say it's pretty good huh, yea might have to get a cheaper stock to get one of these

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

Take all that money your gonna spend on bullshit and buy bullets.

Learn to shoot the rifle. See what works for you and what doesn't.

If you truly have around 1500 to spend. Spend about 1,000 on a good scope. Vortex, SS, Bushnell. Many good choices in that price range.

Then order yourself a case of good 175gn match ammo and go shoot.

When you get the cash back on the scope what are you looking at spending total?

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

Im getting ammo this weekend. This rifle was not only for shooting purposes it was a step closer to just owning a prescion rifle I wanted since I was younger. I know you might think oh look at this wanna be just buying whatever. But hey we all buy things want not need and it feels good. And don't worry I will do a lot of shooting.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

On the trigger, Timney is nice and rifle basix both make relatively cheap triggers that are Great for the price.

FYI we call it a precision rifle...as most of us arent snipers and they werent issued or purcahsed as such. Not busting your balls but that word will catch you a bit of hell here.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

I like that vortex 4-16x50 for 700. What do you recommend for zoom I want variable for shooting at different ranges max 600yds.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

tell you what. I sent you a PM click on the blinking message box in the center of the page below the word "hide" in snipershide.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

Fill out your profile. If we can see where you live someone might be willing to meet you at a range and let you try a few different things.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

I have a Falcon Menace 4-14.
It has been a very good scope. I bought it to check out the whole FFP mil/mil thing. I have since upgraded to an IOR on my primary rifle.

If you buy from SWFA, there are no worries on the falcon. You will get a 5 year warranty through them, save your receipt.

The ONLY issue I had with my falcon is the same one that everyone has. They use a heavy grease on the orings in the turrets. If you remove the turrets and clean the heavy grease out and relubricate with silicone lube spray, you will be rewarded with nice, sharp clicks, not mushy at all.

The 10X super sniper or 10X bushnell tactical mil/mil are really decent scopes, but honestly the Falcon has two very good reticle designs and the glass is very clear for a scope in that price range (about 385).

I believe they are still one of the best deals out there.

If you would reconsider the adjustable stock, the B&C M40 stock is an excellent stock. Very well designed with a full length aluminum bedding block. It costs about 220.

Trust me on this, you are just begining to spend money. Put the money in glass, look to the Vortex PST 4-16, Weaver tactical 3-15 (mil/mil) or the bushnell 3-12.

I like my falcon, I still have it on a range rifle, but as I said, I upgraded.

With the money you save by choosing an excellent, though lower cost stock, skip the tac bolt knob and get the KRG, you can buy better glass AND get a case or two of SouthWest Ammo run and gun or American eagle 168 match.

This way, you'll get out shooting with quality ammo and begin to make more informed decisions on what you ultimately want on your rifle.

This is the best advice you have been given. Dont just booger together a rifle because thats what "the internet guys" said to do. Dont waste your money on stuff that you have no idea if you even need it. Get some trigger time in and then see what preferences you develope. Go to gun shows, hook up with other members and shooters and see what they have and if you can try it. Maybe the eye relief on a particular scope sucks, or the A1 stock isnt comfortable, and you go and drop 1200 on crap you end up not liking. Seems kind of high-schoolish to me.

Get a half decent scope and some bullets. Maybe a bipod and some shooting bags/rests. It doesnt matter if you get a Timney, Shilen or factory trigger. None of them are going to make that rifle shoot well. Lets say the rifle is capable of putting 5 into one ragged hole. Learn to shoot it to the max range you have access to. Learn to shoot in wind, push the rifle farther than you can push yourself (in many cases thats hard to do since its mostly the shooter and not the rifle). This will allow you to guage from your experience, and from what others may have learned, what weak points the rifle and yourself are, then go from there. Aside from that, all you are doin is letting an internet forum build their version of your rifle, and giving your money away.

Some of the optics mentioned are really good and proven, but at least do more research before dropping coin. A 50/50 review is not very deserving of my money IMO.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

i am new to the long range shooting, but not to firearms, i mostly compete in ipsc and 3 gun. i dont have a huge budget to spend on a rifle so i got a 700 new for 525 with 40 dollar rebate and a bell and carlson stock from a member here on the hide. i just ordered a timney 510 for it cuz the xmark sucks. i put a vortex 6-24 ffp on it and i really like it for the money. so far the rifle shoots really good and i like that, now i can keep putting money into it because i know i will just shoot better with every upgrade. its important to listen to these guys on here they are very knowledgeable about LR weapons systems. ive had a lot of help with questions i wasnt sure about. this is by far the best forum site to get any gun related info. if i were u i would go with a bell and carlson stock and with the money u save buy a better optic. my scope was only half the price of my whole build only because i dont have the money to buy a razor or NF. if u are pretty mechanical u can do a lot of the stuff by yourself. i am milling my own inletting on the dbm and also installed my own bolt knob. going to pillar bed my own stock etc. try to save as much money as u can so that u can spend that money on ammo or other things u might need for your rifle. anyways good luck on your build its a lot of fun. and welcome to the hide.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

I read this thread because I recently got a 700 SPS Tactical, which is my first bolt rifle. Based on posts on this forum and elsewhere, i was starting to think my out-of-the-box stock is terrible, I need a better scope, etc. But I'm just going to shoot it for a while. I spent about $1,000 total and painted it recently. That's what I was comfortable spending, plus lots ammo. So off to the range I go! When I've gotten better and formed some opinions--plus have more money to spend without going broke--then I'll do some shopping.

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

i wanted to build my gun as accurate as it could possibly be so i couldnt blame it on the rifle. just reassurance that it was me and not the rifle, now seeing of what its capable i cannot blame a bad shot on it. that was my logic

Re: Help customizing rem 700 sps tactical

I bought a sps tactical a while back for a truck gun. Its shoots good enough with the factory stock to go out and learn with for starters.Mine is being upgraded with Manners T5A and other little goodies so trust me when I say an upgrade from that stock is an upgrade but that stock is fine for a first bolt rifle for a while. Good glass with take you farther than you want to believe. You gotta have good glass. Get that in your head first. A scope that holds zero and tracks accuratly is a MUST in the LR precision world. That gun will get you on the range to find out what matters and what is total B.S. Then after you learn a little, upgrade the stock and maybe trigger and you should be good for a while. Good Luck.
