Searched and came up empty handed.

Now I know Cold Hammer Forged barrels have a longer service life then a non-C.H.F. barrels and the same thing applies to Melonite treated barrels. The questions I have are; would there be double the benefit of Melonite treating a C.H.F. barrel? Would it be a "push" with no benefit whatsoever? Would this make the bore too hard and brittle?

Just curious if any of the barrel manufacturers have tried this (or if anyone has received a barrel in this configuration before, and if so what are the results?

If there is a benefit I would like to get one in the above configuration but carbon wrapped as well.

Thanks

Re: Barrels

Can you find hammer forged barrels for anything other than rifles built with them? As far as I know the only ones doing hammer forged in the US are FN and they aren't selling blanks or finished barrels to anyone other than manufacturers. From some of the manufacturers I've talked to it sounds like even they aren't getting anything from FN. FN has become the new HK of the gun world. They don't want to deal with anyone but govt agencies and even the govt has a hard time dealing with them. . .

Having said that it might help to nitride a hammer forged barrel for additional surface hardness and wear. Not sure what the melonite process is so I can't answer that. I do know that the M240 machinegun uses hammer forged barrels and they hold up for a long time under tough operating conditions that your bolt action will never see.

Re: Barrels

Apparently since this hasn't been done before can anyone with an engineering background "speculate) whether this would work or not?

Re: Barrels

Vern Briggs @ Ruger makes nice hammerd barrel, Daniel Defense and FN also .I make the carbide mandrels for hammering and know these folks and there work very well. . The boy's at Winchester make them in many twist's like Vern does but the Ruger barrels seem to be very even and straight. Thanks Dave
