I picked up a couple of boxes of the 178bthp to try in my .308 AR. My rifle has shot very well with the 178 amax, so I'm hoping to continue that with these bthp's.

I would like to know if the bthp's like to "jump" or not?

I have my amaxs loaded to 2.815" and they do well, but I could get a little more length in my mag if that's what these bullets prefer.

Also, I am loading my amaxs to 44gr of varget now. I plan to drop down to 43gr and work up with the bthp to be safe.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Hornady 178bthp load info

Start at the same OAL and go out if needed. I set mine to .020" off the lands but I use a bolt gun.

Those powder charges should work fine if they worked with the AMAX but starting lower is always a good idea. I use 44grns of Varget and Hornady cases in my bolt gun.

43.8gr of Varget gets me better than 2650. I actually need to chrono them again, I got to 950 with 8.2 mils last week!

Re: Hornady 178bthp load info

I'm running 178 bthps over 43.8gr varget at 2600 from a 22" tube. In my experience they do not do well with a long jump. With my factory Remington chamber I can't get them anywhere near the lands while running at internal mag OAL ( <2.840). I get around 3/4 moa instead of the <1/2 I was getting from SMKs. They're performing well enough that I'll continue to use what I have, but when I run out I'll be switching back to SMKs until I get rid of my factory barrel or upgrade to a DBM.

I like the bullet and the BC is sexy, but it does not like the factory Remington chamber.

Re: Hornady 178bthp load info

I dont know how they will shoot in a gas gun but Andrew McCourt is working on a load for me with this bullet/powder combo.

His 175 SMK load drives nails do I hope this 178 will too. The factory stuff shot awesome at distance.

Re: Hornady 178bthp load info

Thanks for the replies. I'm hoping I can get these to shoot as well out of my rifle as the amax. Looks like I'm going to stick with my current length and hopefully work up to where my amax load currently is on powder and velocity.

I just loaded some to match the base to ogive length of my .3 moa 178 amax load. They are too long for my mag but hopefully I'll see better results than the 2+ moa I got last time at mag length.

Re: Hornady 178bthp load info

I have had excellent performance with these bullets in both my DPMS LR308 and a Gap Crusader.

My load is 42gr of Ramshot Tac loaded to mag length for the gas gun.

Case prep consisted of sizing and trimming. Nothing fancy.
