Gunsmithing Barrel Threading Question ?

Does the barrel need to be removed from the action to thread the muzzle for a brake ? I have a R700 in .300 WinMag that I would like to add a brake to . The barrel only has a couple hundred rounds down it . I'm wondering if it could be done without too much trouble disassembling , refinishing , etc. If not I'll just hold off to the next rebarrel . If possible please feel free to recommend a smith as well.

Re: Barrel Threading Question ?

Disassembly and reassembly should be simple for any competent smith. They shouldn't have to refinish the barrel if they are just pulling it for threading.

If the barrel is long enough the smith can probably leave the action on and run it through the head stock for threading also. According to my precision Chinese tape measure it looks like I could dial up a 25"+ barrel through the headstock using the factory 4 jaw and maybe drop a few inches off for my spider chuck. By the way, this is a G4003G (goes well with the tape measure).

Thanks , I might add it is a 26" fluted stainless barrel . Here is a pic of the rifle in its current form .

Re: Barrel Threading Question ?

26" should be a non issue to thread with the barrel still on the receiver.

Re: Barrel Threading Question ?

Stay away from pulling the barrel because you will streatch the threads and the flutes will index a little more ccw looking from the breach to muzzle. It doesn't take gorilla force to do this either. (ask me how I know)

Re: Barrel Threading Question ?

Barrel should not need to be pulled. At 26" it will pass through the headstock of a 13/40 lathe with plenty to spare.
I can thread though the headstock as short as 18" and if for some reason it won't pass through then I work between centers.
It really boils down to how good a machinist your 'Smith is.
As far as a Smith goes it would help to know where your located.

Re: Barrel Threading Question ?

Don't have any particular smith in mind . I'm located in Illinois but am willing to ship to insure it is done correctly . Thanks for all the advice , I'm glad it can be done without pulling the action . That would probably have killed the project at least now it can go forward .
