As you can see yes I am new to the form, but I read more than I post. My question was what optics do (any) PD's allow their DM's/ "snipers" to use. Ive been looking around and havn't seen any topics that discuss this and was curious.

Re: LEO OPTICS

It depends if the Dept. buys a package deal, or policy mandates the officer to what they must have , or says, its your money choose wisely. It varies from dept. to dept. Pretty much all that I have seen are Leupolds and N.F.

Re: LEO OPTICS

From the trainings/schools I've been to, Leupold seems to be the main choice.

But I have seen a bit of everything. At the last course, there were NF's, one Kahles, a few USO's and several Schmidt and Benders. There was also a pair of guys with low end Nikons... new team, just learning.

To Zebras point... those S&B's were sitting on some very nice straight pull Sigs. Those officers were from a town with a big German car plant in it... so they were granted some utterly amazing equipment by 'rich uncle Car Plant,' which naturally chose European gear. So it can vary a lot by dept and budget.

Frequently, if the actual marksmen are involved in the final decision-making process, you will see top-tier gear. If the department's or town's 'purchasing office' makes the decision, you will get cheap gear.

And I know a lot of officers (including myself) who shell out of their own pockets to get good stuff. They are on the line if gear fails. As long as the dept approves it... you're GTG.

Whatever you get, run it through tracking drills and check the reticles against a known standard. And exercise the scopes regularly (work the knobs) to ensure everything keeps working as it should.

Last, if you have any say on writing/revising your department's long gun policy/gear policy, make it as broad as possible and make sure it covers precision rifles. You don't want a detailed policy intended to cover patrol rifles and then find that the same specifications and standards cover your precision rifles as well. If you can get a policy that allows personally-owned gear, so much the better.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: LEO OPTICS

Most departments buy either the 700P or LTR package that comes with the Luepy 3.5-10.

At the class I attended, there were a couple of AI's with NF scopes, several luepys, one nikon, one Falcon (mine) and one PSG-1 with a 6X Kahles. I was the ONLY guy with a FFP scope.

One of the local PD's runs a 700P with a wal-mart bushnell on it.

I run an IOR 3-18 now, most of the guys at my PD think I am nuts for spending 1500 on a scope. Down here, many guys supply their own gear, most of those guys have really decent gear.

The answer to that question is as varied as the wind.

I have seen everything from Schmidt & Bender to Countersniper. Leupold seems to be the most common with everything from old fine reticle scopes to new MkIV's. When you start going to LE competitions you will notice more Nightforce.

Re: LEO OPTICS

yea.. I'd say probably 80% Leupolds from the different Schools and teams I've worked with.

Re: LEO OPTICS

There is not a set manufacturer they use and they do not have to do a bid like the Military do.

We have sold them Vortex, Leupold, S&B, Premier, and a lot of Nightforce. It comes down to their budget and it they get grants.

Re: LEO OPTICS

I have run everything from an IOR, SS, and I now run a Vortex Razor on my duty rifle. In the area where I am most other agencies are still stuck on Leupold MOA scopes.

Re: LEO OPTICS

I met a police officer who was using a savage bolt rifle w/old leupold duplex scope that looked like it had spent about a year at the bottom of a lake...he was from a dept that had 4 officers and one car lol...

Meanwhile my buddy's dept which is in a high-dollar town has every gadget imaginable.

All depends on budget.

Re: LEO OPTICS

My dept. went with Remington 700 PSS with Nightforce 3.5-15X50, NF base and rings. Given a limited budget, the thought process was to get into rifles that would do the job and spend extra on better glass. It worked out very well. Hornady TAP 168gr. AMAX for open air and Federal bonded for a barrier load. The illuminated reticle on the NF worked out very well. The Remington 700 rifle / Leupold optic combo is very popular and will do the job. Again it depends on budget. My suggestion is to buy the best you or the PD can afford.
