I got used to using My 700P for all of My long range shooting years back, & even used it in the F Class Nationals in 2005 down in Oak Ridge, TN. Now, I'm going to get Myself another long range setup. I'm trying to decide if I'm (1) going to just order a 700 5R Milspec from Buds, (2) Order a 700 action from Brownell's, then have it trued & barreled.

Part of what is giving Me trouble is the stock choice. I got used to the HS Precision stock on the 700P & PSS that I had, & felt it was a quality stock, so the purchase of a 5R Milspec would be a no brainer. Skim bed the stock & be done.

The part about buying a bare action, and barreling it would come to a little more cash after buying a stock, but I'm wondering if some of the other stock makers products are that much better. Let me rephrase that. I know that a McMillan stock is of higher quality than an HS Precision, but will it make a rifle more accurate? I also really like the looks of the Bell & Carlson Medalist stock.

Is there a difference in accuracy from the same barreled actions when used in these or is the only difference in looks and build quality?

After doing a lot of reading here on the hide over the years, I never really get that answer out of the folks that have changed from one stock to the other. I'll agree though, that My memory isn't what it used to be, & I'm doing a little more digging, now that I'm thinking of spending some money. heheh.

All comments welcome. thanks folks. Mac

Re: Performance difference between stocks ?

I have HSP stocks and MCM stocks. Both rifles shoot well. I will say that on the two I am comparing, the fit and finish on the McM is better, but it did cost me more, so I am not sure if it is a fair comparison.

The HS Precision stock has an aluminum bedding block that works quite well, while the McMillan is glass bedded.

I have no complaint about either one. I have heard good things about the B&C for what they cost. I do not think they are quite as sturdy though. I have gotten to handle a few, and I got to fire a rifle bedded in one. FWIW it shot well, so I think you can get it to work for you if you are on a budget. Personally I would jump on the Mcmillan or an AICS or one of the other chassis setups. Manners stocks are VERY nice too. Whiskey 3 chassis is nice, and the XLR is good stuff too.

Re: Performance difference between stocks ?

As long as both stocks are preped and bedded to perform a stress free life for the barreled action, there will be no accuracy difference. The bigger difference will be shooter comfort.

If you're perfectly comfortable behind the HS Precision, then rock on. If you have never layed behind a Manners T5A or McM A5 or a McM Prone stock then you MAY be missing out.

If you like one of the other stocks and want the best fit possible, get a flat top stock and send it to this place for inletting and bedding. They are far more afforable for inletting and will do a better job than some of other places that advertise here for the same services.

Re: Performance difference between stocks ?

I have 1 HS, 1 B&C Medalist and 1 Manners. Accuracy seems the same with each. I skim bed the aluminum block stocks and fully bed the others. As far as comfort, the Manners is top notch and my next build has one on the slate but I have no regrets about the BC and won't be changing it on the rifle it holds. The HS is the only one I'm considering changing and only because its a sporter style stock and I prefer a vertical grip. See if you can find a few different stocks to handle locally and go from there. The biggest difference is in how the stock fits YOU.
