I got used to using My 700P for all of My long range shooting years back, & even used it in the F Class Nationals in 2005 down in Oak Ridge, TN. Now, I'm going to get Myself another long range setup. I'm trying to decide if I'm (1) going to just order a 700 5R Milspec from Buds, (2) Order a 700 action from Brownell's, then have it trued & barreled.
Part of what is giving Me trouble is the stock choice. I got used to the HS Precision stock on the 700P & PSS that I had, & felt it was a quality stock, so the purchase of a 5R Milspec would be a no brainer. Skim bed the stock & be done.
The part about buying a bare action, and barreling it would come to a little more cash after buying a stock, but I'm wondering if some of the other stock makers products are that much better. Let me rephrase that. I know that a McMillan stock is of higher quality than an HS Precision, but will it make a rifle more accurate? I also really like the looks of the Bell & Carlson Medalist stock.
Is there a difference in accuracy from the same barreled actions when used in these or is the only difference in looks and build quality?
After doing a lot of reading here on the hide over the years, I never really get that answer out of the folks that have changed from one stock to the other. I'll agree though, that My memory isn't what it used to be, & I'm doing a little more digging, now that I'm thinking of spending some money. heheh.
All comments welcome. thanks folks. Mac
