I did a quick search, but only found a few results. What are the dangers/disadvantages of using cast lead bullets through a suppressor? Also, besides lead, what bullet would you guys recommend for a better mushrooming projectile? This will be for a .308. I am currently using 9.8 grains of Trailboss behind a 175 smk for an average of 950fps.

Re: Cast bullets through can?

I would not shoot a cast lead bullet thru a suppressor. There is no guarantee they are going to stabilize and not tear your can up. You might get away with a few but its a chance that I would not take with my equipment. IMHO

There is a reason why they are outdated technology.....

Re: Cast bullets through can?

I shoot cast through all of my suppressors, my dad does with his, and a friend of mine who's a suppressor manufacturer does as well.

None of us have ever had a single issue with cast through the rifle. Done right, they're highly affordable and useful solutions, especially for heavy for twist rate, subsonic ammunition.

Across the 3 of us, we have fired appx 50k centerfire, cast lead rounds through the suppressors since 2005 and not a SINGLE issue.

Lyman gas checks are meant to come off upon bore exit, Hornady gas checks are crimped in place. The Hornady checks are the ones you want to use. Skip the Lymans for use in the suppressor.

Under some circumstances they're still the very best thing out there.

I have not.

I have shot Missouri brand, they worked fine from my 308's and 30-06. My dad has been casting his own since I was about 5-6y/o and I've invested in moulds and casting equipment as well. The vast majority of what we shoot is home-made cast though in a pinch I do keep some store-bought stuff around just in case I'm too swamped to get the equipment burning and make a day of casting lead.

I have a 6.5mm Lee mould that spits out 170gr "as cast" RN pills, with the gas check and lube they run a full 180gr and are easily stable at subsonic speeds from an 8tw rifle barrel.

Makes for a great penetrating 6.5mm and I expect to be taking a deer with it this year should the (short range, head) shot present itself.

These have worked well for many

Re: Cast bullets through can?

I was thinking more along the lines of home casted bullets....
I've seen a few accidents from those.

Re: Cast bullets through can?

Kys338...no i dont have the equipment to make my own....I was considering getting a few hard cast bullets to use on hogs/predators because while the smk and sst's will work, I want something with a little more mushrooming capability.

That's very interesting as I've shot approx 2K, of my own cast 187 gr Lyman's thru my .308 canned stick an never had issue. I shoot more cast now as there seems to be nothing a cast won't do when it comes to killing meat, or playing at 500 or less. With subs I used TB for a long time but switched to 700X an never looked back, many, many groups .5 to 3/4 moa with subs.
Shot many a sub only match with them, and never had issue with placement of the round or over all finish on the shooter tally sheets.

100% Wheel weights w/a gas check give the best mushrooming. Hard or laser cast both, are too hard for hunting meat at sub muzzle speed, past 75-100 yds.
I've taken deer at 275 with mine and he was DRT.

Learn to cast your own, an pocket more money faster, than any other reloading savings. Done right you give up very little, and if your field craft is fair, you give up nothing at all. I've dropped Griz, Elk an moose with cast 30 cal bullets moving at 2700fps. Remember, It's where you put it at, not what you hit it, with.

Re: Cast bullets through can?

Lehigh Controlled expansion bullets are pretty sick. They are pricey but they open up very nicely.

Re: Cast bullets through can?

I have had very good luck with plain base cast in my integrally suppressed 77/44 and in the .500 Whisper.

Having said that, they are both able to be taken apart for cleaning. It's not as bad as what you will see in a .22 can but the lead deposited is just as hard to remove.

Re: Cast bullets through can?

I use CBE molds for my 300 and 510 whispers. I had baffle strikes in my 510 can, probably due to gas checks coming off A Lee 535 GC for my 458 socom. If I do not take apart the cans right after I shoot, then the gunk hardens and makes it very hard to get them apart later.

Another option is to use a TMJ (plated) copper cast bullet. I have used alot of the Berry's 155 gr. .308 for subsonic loads. You could get away with using cast now and then, but the cost of plated is not that great compared to purchasing cast projos.
