I just made a trade on a rem 700 SPS that has never been fired. It has had the bolt fluted and a tac knob installed. It's chambered in 7mm rum. I'm wanting to build a mid weight rifle that i can use for long range hunting. By midweight I mean 12 or 13 pounds. Can I run a 300 short mag in this long action and will long action bottom metal work with this. What are some other good choices that mate with this bolt face size. Would kinda like something in 6.5 or or 7mm, but i have a 338 lapua so a 338 edge wouldn't be out of the question. Alhough I would like to get a shorter barrel to keep the weight down. Also does anybody have any gunsmith recomendations

Re: Getting started on first custom build

you might also call Predator Custom. They are in Knoxville, TN so they probably arent too far away from you.

Go 7mm SAUM! It will feed from LA AICS magazines. We used a .220" free bore reamer and run a 3.15" COAL with the 180 Hybrid.

Re: Getting started on first custom build

We build a whole lot of 7mm Rem Mags that have killed a bunch of critters.

Nice thing too if you travel is IF (when) the airport loses your ammo, you can buy it just about anywhere.

Easy to load, no widgit drama at the bench, and they shoot well.

Good luck on your project.

I have one I really don't recommend and I will send you a pm with that info. If you can find a local smith (within a reasonable drive) that would be who I recommend. There is nothing worse than waiting 6 months for a rifle (that was quoted 6 weeks) and then finding out that the clown screwed it up and you have to send it back for correction. Then after another 2 months, they send it back and it looks like they took a big sh*t in a gun case and shipped it back to you.

If you can see your smith face to face, it will make any build issues easy to work out.

Just curious...how many of his rifles have you ACTUALLY handled? Shot?

So your referral is based upon what, exactly??

Sorry OP, maybe this will help you make a decision also.... Where do I begin..

I didn't just pick the first smith that I popped into my head, I actually put a lot of thought and research into it. Being that I live in NJ and there aren't many smiths in the area, I had to rely on the power of the internet and the telephone to expand my search. In fact, I took the word of others who have procured the services of these fine smiths, as many of us do. That is what makes this forum such a great resource.

I would have loved to travel to each and every shop on my list but unfortunately, my schedule doesn't allow me to fly off to Missouri, California, Iowa, Georgia, South Dakota, and Louisiana in order to go handle a rifle to make a decision on a build.

Once the potential list of smiths was a bit shorter due to the recommendations by fellow members and eliminations due to negative input, I began to e-mail the the remaining builders with the questions I had. At this point, I called each of the smiths, check their lead times and made my decision.

As far as your question "So your referral is based upon what, exactly??"

1. Gradous is top notch in the gunsmithing field.
2. Gradous is highly recommended, not only but the members of this froum and other forums, he is recommended by the other TOP GUNSMITHS.
3. Gradous is a pleasure to deal with, he is a top notch gentleman.
4. Gradous pays extremely close attention to detail.
5. He builds all of the rifles himself and he only builds 50 rifles a year. He doesn't rush his builds just to get them out the door, he takes his time and does it right.
6. From what I heard and what I see in pictures and videos, his shop is immaculate, everything is in its place and squared away. This is a sign of a perfectionist and this is the man that I would like to make my first 2 custom rifles.
7. You don't see ANY GRADOUS built rifles for sale. This is due to the fact that people KEEP THEM if they have them. If by some slim chance you see one for sale, it sells almost immediately for top dollar.

I'm done.

Re: Getting started on first custom build

So then don't you think that maybe you should actually wait and see the product of your own, untested research---which admittedly is based only upon second hand information you gleaned through online research---prior to making a referral.

This post is in no way intended to call Mr. Gradous's skills into question.

If that is all you gathered from what I said, then I guess there is no need to even bother with your foolishness any more.

Again, Sorry OP. This guy is a tool. I guess he really is just here to be a general nuisance.
