I want to start off by saying it is a great range with nice steel targets at 250, 500, 750, and 1000 yards. My only complaint is when you go to sign in the guy behind the counter gives you a weird look when you tell him you want to shoot long range and that you better be prepared to "qualify". Which I like! I dont want a bunch of ya hoos lobbing rounds every where while I am trying to shoot. But then when you get out there the range master does not pay any attention to who is shooting at the long range lanes and you have a bunch of mall ninjas lobbing rounds at the 700yd line with ar15s. The whole time I am tryng to do precision work while taking brass to the temple. I would have no problem quaifying before I shoot and have no problem doing so each time I go to the range. I think this should be enforced what are yalls thoughts on this?

Re: Best of the West

I think that folks who come up with the problems often find themselves being tasked with providing the solutions.

Be careful what you wish for.

Some questions I just don't ask, and some questions I just don't answer.

Re: Best of the West

I was a bit surprised when I had to "qualify" to shoot past the 250 yard line the first time I went to that range. To "qualify" at the best of the west to shoot past 250 I had to hit a torso size pop-up 3 times at 500 while the range master spotted for me. I was a touch nervous partly because it was my first time to ever shoot that far + a pretty serious (but nice) guy a foot behind me not to mention the half dozen shooters that stopped what their doing to train their scopes on my intended target and yell out "HIT" simultaneously as if the loud DING and the steel plate disappearing as it flops backwards wasn't an adequate enough indicator. I understand the need to qualify and the owners concern absolutely, I can only imagine what their liability is and don't blame em for taking steps they see fit in hopes of preventing incidents, whether it be signing that waiver before customers shoot or requiring them to qualify before they let them loose on their rifle range. All that said I consider myself lucky that I have a 1000yrd range a reasonable 30 minute drive away. And to be clear im not complaining about the "help" or rules above, simply describing my experience.

Man I love that range. It's very addicting. It's a shame gas is 4$ a gallon and I drive a v8 tundra. It's great when you are the only one out there hitting those larue pop ups at 750 as fast as you can.

Re: Best of the West

I have no issue with the Qual thing keeps the weekend warriors in the kiddie pool
Then again i dont shoot weekends to ensure i dont have to put up with their dumb ass's
I,m no mall ninja n routinely shoot 500-750 with my AR, which more than capable of engaging targets @ that range.
The staff are kinda clueless, a couple of the R/O,s are worthless, mostly they all know me n pert much just leave me be.
Range is far from ideal but it does go to 1k, that's about all you can say about it.

if people are working the pits , i dont think anyone would argue your position, but because you complain about brass to the face, i can assume that isnt your concern.

and... how does qualifying change you getting brass in your face ? and shit man , if you dont like that just wait until some guy with a 50 cal or some other gun with an annoying muzzle brake decides to shoot next to you , i bet that will ruin your "precision work." ( and maybe im suggesting you become that annoying person with a 50 cal... it will certainly cause people shooting around you to relocate.)

i think the proposal of having to qualify will turn people away from long range shooting. I can imagine allot of people's first time shooting at long range resulted in 30-40 rounds down range with perhaps only a single hit. It happened to me. ELR shooters experince that type of thing all the time. Or just people trying to push "ballisitically poor" rounds downrange, like 22lr's or subsonic ammunition.

If peoplle had to qualify allot of people would never get that opporutnity to try these things since there is usually a steep learning curve invovled with that type of shooting.

but , best of the west ? their show is one giant marketing pitch , use our bullets , or guns , or methods ,....i guess if you bought one of thier setups qualifying would be easy since all you have to do is listen to them and then you'd get it right.

Re: Best of the West

i shot a three gun there last year. it was held by ar15 tagets.com needless to say i was pissed that i drove 8+ hours, and have had better three guns in oklahoma. we were promised 8 stages i believe and we shot four. i paid for a night match and we shot two stages before they shut it down because it was to loud for neighbours. if went on forever all of the cool stages were taken out cuz of poor planning and richochets. i would go back for a match if i was in the neighborhood, other than than ill go to oklahoma, drive 2 hours shoot 6 stages drive back and be home by 5
