I got a big interest in long range hunting and shooting about a year ago and have been practicing as much as i can with what i have. I currently have a good shooting factory remington 7mm mag and a good shooting factory browning 300. wsm. I ended up trying to set up the browning due to my lack of knowledge at the time and never decided to switch it over. My little brother offered me money for it. So i have a few different options on my mind; i will be going to school in september (college) so most of my money is tied up right now but i have put a little aside for hunting and guns.

Option one: Sell the browning to my little brother and take the money i have and buy a remington or savage in a 300. win mag and set it up as my long range hunting rig. (love the 30. cal's for big game hunting) and when the money comes around fully custom it.

Option two: take the money from selling my browning to my brother and take that money and put what work i can into my 7mm and use that as my primary long range hunting/long range rig.

I have a Vortex Viper PST that will be put on whichever route i go. I will be getting Nightforce rings and base when the guns come back and that is my start on optics. I dont have a lot of money to work with so if i went route one i was thinking of getting a 300. win mag in a Sendero and then a little bit of trigger work. If i stick with the 7mm then im going to need a little bit more work. not sure what though. some advice would be great!!

Re: Advice on rifles!

Sell the Browning and get a good .223 (Savage 10PC or Remmy SPS Tac) and shoot it weekly. The .223 is much cheaper to feed and you will be forced to read the conditions more than with the high BC 7mm bullets. I acquired plenty of gear and realized I can't feed it all, I am now slowly selling gear to fund training and reloading components.

Re: Advice on rifles!

You seem to want the 300, we'll go with that.

Sell both rifles, buy a Remington 5r 300wm, or a savage 110fcp 300wm in the HS tactical stock.

Or, the 7mm will do whatever you want really, so sell the 300, order a custom stock for the 7mm, a new trigger as well, have it bedded by a competent smith.

Re: Advice on rifles!

Keep the 7mm mag!

Bed it, brake it, have a trigger job done.

162's-168's at 3000 fps are a great long range combination which are very hard to improve upon. You're not going to be able to see a difference in killing power with 300wm compared to the 7mm, only recoil.

If I were in your shoes I'd buy a reloading set with the extra money and buy enough bullets, brass, primers and powder to last a while.

Re: Advice on rifles!

I say keep the browning, the 300WSM round is very similar to the 300WM, only it has 50fps less, but consumes about 5-10 grains less powder and has slightly lighter recoil.

Re: Advice on rifles!

You're "going to college", and you want to shoot, too? Sell to your brother, and buy a nice 22. Study your heart out, stay away from the girls and the parties, and choose a Major, that will get you a job when you finish. If????, when you land a good job, and pay for an apartment, furniture, etc. Oh, don't forget the Ladies!, and OOPS, a kid or two, if you're not careful! Finally, in 20 yrs., you can think about a "nice" rifle. I'm sorry. Your post took me back to when I was young, and naive. Then, the kids need to go to college. WHAT"S that gonna cost? Forget it! Don't listen to me! I'm in a very dark place, right now. I've got this memory, in my head, of a dirt water apt. in LA, and the cockroaches, and the Cup of Soup, for lunch and dinner, and the rents due, before the next paycheck comes........... Just something to ponder.Hey You did ask for ADVICE!

Re: Advice on rifles!

For what you want to do you don't need a magnum, and it might even hold you back.

Re: Advice on rifles!

if they shoot well. keep them, and dont change a thing id say

if you must sell a good shooting rifle, wich is something i would hate to do then only to a frind or family.
get a savage 10 pc in 223 and start reloading for all calibers if you havent already that should save you the most

Re: Advice on rifles!

See the reason i want to sell the browning is because of after market parts and the lack of smiths willing to work on them!

This gun will not only be used for targets but for hunting and thats why some of these answers wont work. i have a good 22 already, and a 17. I also have a good 243. win so i dont really need the 223.

I also already reload to give anyone who wants to know a heads up, so i can save some money there and and put it towards gun work. I almost have enough money for school! been saving up real long time and have invested my money in stocks and bonds aswell. I have money a side for the gun work

Re: Advice on rifles!

Keep the 7 mag sell the browning. Remington parts are everywhere and I love my 7 mag, took a buffalo out west no problem with it.
