Stock choice

I am in the early steps of getting parts for a 300 win. mag build. Here is what I am planning: Remington 700 action, Mccmillan stock, and Rock Creek barell. I am getting the action and the barell and sending them to my gun builder. This is my first custom, so I am a little worried about what stock to get. I have a Nightforce 5.5-22x50 NXS to go on top. I want to make sure I get a high enough comb so I don't have to raise my head off the stock to look through the scope. I would like to stay away from an adjustable stock, because I don't care for the look of it. This is going to be hunting rifle, but I would like to get into long range shooting as well. I was looking at the Mccmillan A3 sporter as an option, but wasn't sure about how this would perform as a hunting stock. Any advice would be helpful. Also, if anyone has a magnum action or Remington 300 or 7 magnum rifle that they are willing to sell; I would be interested. Thanks.

Re: Stock choice

I like the A series of McMillan stocks. I'm particularly partial to my A-5. If you're concerned about being the right height for the scope....the adjustable cheek is extremely nice. I went with the adjustable saddle and three-way buttstock. I have dialed in the fit of that stock very easily....worth every $ I spent on upgrades. Just something to think about.

Re: Stock choice

Are the A3 sporters too bulky for carrying while hunting?

Re: Stock choice

I think that's probably the best compromise stock option....by that I mean it has features of the A series with features of a hunting stock. As far as being too bulky...really subjective. I hump my A-5 rifle around when I'm hunting in Montana. It's not fun by any stretch...but my shots are from the prone position and the rifle fits me like a glove. Guess it depends on how you hunt and how far you need to walk with your rig. Mine are shot prone for hunting or off a bench...so I really like the features of the A series.

Good Luck,

Wayne

P.S.
If you're going to do prone shooting or long range bench...that A-3 hybrid would serve you well.

Re: Stock choice

I appreciate your response. Do you think that stock will have a high enough cheek for my Nightforce without having to raise my head? I am 6'3 and 220lbs, so I should be able to handle a good sized rifle anyways. I am new to the whole custom thing and really want to get it right. Wife probably won't let me get another rifle for a long time.. Ha.Ha. Any other advice would be appreciated. Do you have a picture of your gun?

Re: Stock choice

Is manners as good as Mcmillan?

One MCS-T5A and one MCS-T. The "T" denotes an adjustable cheek. Also, if you look at Manners stock's, check out their Mini-Chassis system.

Manners will probably the only stocks I use except for a full stock/chassis system.

Re: Stock choice

I have an A5(saddle adj cheek) with a NXS 5.5-22x50. The scope is mounted as low as possible, so low the Night Force scope cover will not fit between the barrel and objective. You can see through the scope with the cheek piece all the way down, but it puts the contact to my cheek lower than I like. If you have access to a shop that has one in stock go take a look at it and handle it. If your lucky you might find a used gun with one and can see if you like it or not.

think about where the long action bolt has to be when removing it from the action - right where your cheek has to be for your eye to be lined up for the scope - that is why the comb needs to be adjustable/removable, also 1 set comb height cannot be right for all the variations in scopes, rings, slanted rails, and head size

you need to ask yourself is the rifle for looking at, or shooting?

Re: Stock choice

i would take a look at the varmiter and the htg by mcmillian and the manners T i have all three of them and love them i use them all for hunting and steel, you could always add a stock pack on to it is not high enough for you, i have stock packs on all mine and one i added little strips of foam to raise it even higher that i have under the stock pack.

Re: Stock choice

I don't have a great photo of the whole stock...but here's one of the butt...you can see the adjustable saddle and threeway butt. Either way...I highly recommend checking out the molded in colors / camo...worth it IMHO.
