Ok...I am pretty excited so this story may be a bit winded. Sorry in advance.

To start off, I had my gun in pieces the night before. I sold my NF scope to a friend of mine and decided to replace my trigger with a timney. So the fun began. I had my barreled action and mated it in one of my AICS stocks. Got my trigger in and set the weight. I decided to mount my 5-25 SB PMII scope. I was loading at 11 pm last night and my shoot was at 9:30AM!

I am a bit of a procrastinator and if it wasnt for the last minute, nothing would get done around me.

This was my very first competitive shoot period. I really had no clue what I was doing. Thanks to a couple of nice guys who filled me in on what was going to happen and what to do. I was able to use the left target for siters....Well, after getting my scope zeroed in with the wind ect, I started on my Record target. I did not have any type of timer so I was unsure how much time I had left. I started sending rounds down range at a good pace. I scored a 187 on my first string with 6 bulls eyes. The second time around, I had a bit of a feel for it and nerves were gone. I managed to keep them all in the 9 or better ring. I had 6 more bulls on this one with a 191 score. I won the match by 2 points with a score of 387.

I was just excited to do decent for my very first time shooting.

I know next time, I will have my gun set up and wont be sighting it in at the event and will bring s timing device so I am not frantically sending rounds down range trying to beat the clock.

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

Congrats on a win your first time out! You do realize that you're now hooked? Great shooting and keep up the good work!

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

Thanks guys. Yes, I am definately hooked. I got outshot in the first relay but once I settled in, got the time thing figured out and nervousness out of the way, I started to shoot a little better. As the wind picked up, I watched others get frustrated as their groups spread out.

The wind picked up on the second string of 20 and I ended up making 3 windage adjustments. Wind was weird. It was blowing to the west up close and straight east 25 ft in front of the target.

I will try to get pics of my targets and set up sometime tom.

Thanks for the kind words. The sad thing is, This was a peice together ordeal today. I borrowed a friends shooting mat, another friends front rest and rear bag. I had to borrow a spotting scope from my father.

I was a little tensed up heading to the shoot because A.) it was my first time doing something like this, and B.) I was not prepared. I was execting things to fall apart but instead They fell together.

Now that begginers luck is out of the way, I am finding my own mats, bags, and rest and getting ready for next months.

Hope I dont lose that lucky streak.

It was an NRA match In Effingham IL at the Sportsman's Club.

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

There's something about fresh reloads, I never shoot any ammo at matches that are more than 12hrs old. Great job sounds very similar to some of my match experiences.

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

It only cost 7 bucks for non members and 5 for memebers. I thought it was extremely reasonable.

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

I'm just a silly old sling shooter but a 187 followed by a 191 doesn't total a 387. perhaps a correction somewhere is in order?

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

Just a guess but it looks like he may of accidently typed 387 instead of 378, a simple error in typing is what I believe.

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

Yes..Sorry typo. I just checked my score sheet and it is a 378. I did not mean to fudge that to look better lol

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

I wish my first f class outing produced those type of results. Best of luck with future mathces.

Man, I wish I'd known you guys were shooting there when I was in Champaign. I would have never missed a match!

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

I head up to Champaign about 3 times a month! They have a nice salt walter place called sailfin up there.

We will have another shoot in May if anyone close cares to come. I can help you get signed up ect.

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

Thanks. LawDawg was my Spotter and my friend who purchased my NF. Couldnt have done it without a good support group!

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

Congrats and nice shooting! I have only shot in a match once and my story sounds just like yours, minus the winning part...lol, not even close.

I need to get a timer as well..I felt myself rushing as others were finishing up and I had no idea on how much time was left, talk about anxiety.

flynlow, Must have missed it but what distances were you shooting? Nice shooting by the way.

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won! Pics posted

flynlow3, i've passed through Effingham several times on my way to visit family in Indianapolis. You live in God's country my friend, I am a big whitetail hunter and have thought about trying out several of the public areas around there. Good shooting by the way.

Great job man! My first match I was 6th. I thought that was bad ass, to win on your first attempt is awesome!

You're shitting us, right?

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

Fresh bullets. In law enforcement, they dont like to carry the same bullets all year round in their guns. They will shoot them and put fresh in at least once a year. I was told that on carry weapons, the powder is constantly moving around and breaking up. when it does that it causes inconsistantcy. The smaller powder particals burn at a more rapid pace and can cause the load to be hotter.

Re: 1st FTR shoot and I won!

I load when I have time to load and shoot when I have time to shoot. That often means my loads are older than twelve hours. I haven't noticed them being inaccurate or not as good as the really fresh stuff.
BTW, anyone should shoot enough that they aren't carrying the same F'N ammo around for a year!
What you say about powder degradation is true to a point. Tumble a few loaded rounds for a couple of hours and see what happens. I just don't think normal carry would ever cause that issue. Now environmental changes (out in the rain/snow) could very well cause concern.
