Well, I just got my new Leica 1600 in the mail today, and it happens to be a perfect day for rangefinding. The crops around here aren't in or growing yet, so I can see for miles and miles. Also, it's overcast today, which I believe is perfect conditions for lasing.

The first thing I noticed is that the glass is above average for a rangefinder. It is better than the leupold and bushnell rangefinder glass I have looked through. The image is definately dim, which is understandable due to the small lenses. Overall, the glass is good, but won't take the place of a set of small binoculars.

The ballistic calculation feature is pretty well useless for me, and most likely for readers at snipershide, because it is not a precise bc and muzzle velocity calculation, but rather a curve that you can choose and use to get you close.

The range of this rangefinder is very disappointing. It has trouble at 1,000 yards on houses, tractors, grain bins, cedar trees, and every other thing I tried. When I say trouble, I mean it may or may not give you a reading. It routinely gives ranges to 800.

Accuracy of the beam in relation to the aiming box in the rangefinder is horrible. At one point, I was trying to hit a house at one mile. I was shooting the laser approximately 3 feet above a fence post that was 130 yards away. The rangefinder kept giving me the range to the post.

All in all, I'd say the 1600 was a fail. I have a Leica 900 I use for archery hunting and have been very pleased with. It's been through all sorts of torture and keeps on ticking. It reliably gives me ranges to 600 yards on cedar tress, black cattle, deer, and anything else I shoot it at.

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

eek... that much for a LRF that will only do 800.... return it, get the bushnell 1600, it will do 1800

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

It sounds like you might have got a bad one. I have an old Leica 1200 Rangemaster scan that easily goes past 800

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

I just got mine out and ranged a wagon at 1,079 yards (furthest point I can see from my house)and it is a bright sunny day here in KC. It sounds like you may have got a bad one.

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

It looks like there are a few options for the Bushnell 1600 any recommendations? What do they run$?

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

I used it extensively, last time this weekend on competition and it performed flawlessly up to 1460 meters. My repeated max range is 1890 meters and I repeatedly lase a house between the crowns of trees half way to the target, which is 1530 meters away. Gotta be a bad unit.

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

I have had the exact opposite experience, in fact I took mine a week after I got it this January and went out to a sniper training range with targets out past 1600 yards. I was easily able to range targets out to 1500 yards. I even had a return on a large hill out at around 1800 yards. I played around with it out the back of my deck at home as well and was easily able to read towers, trees, buildings etc out past 1000 yards. I was impressed with the return speed of the range as well as the clarity of the glass. I have a buddy who has the 1000 and he was impressed by this unit as well as the speed it returned a reading.

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

Mine has only been good for 1100 yards max in perfect conditions on houses, hillsides and the like! 800 seems to be about max for a consistent reading...very good glass but all-in-all it is disappointing past 8/900! Will be getting a vectronix soon I hope!

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

I have the 1600 and it works. 1000 yards+ is asking a lot for a range finder. The Swarovski is better than the Leica. I'd like to see the fusion binoculars.

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

I have the 1100 and it works pretty well, the beam does expand on the way out to the target. And, ranging on tree's and fluffy things is not that reliable. The beam has to be able to reflect back.

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

I have a Leica 1600 and have had some issues as well. First off, the rangefinding on mine actually works perfectly. I have ranged things out to 1700 meters with it, and I love that aspect of the unit.

My issues are with the thermometer, and the barometer. The barometer is only accurate to plus or minus 1 psi (which is plus or minus 2 inches of mercury). And the thermometer is only accurate within 10 degrees of the actual temp. Im sorry, but I can pretty much step outside and guess the temp within 10 degrees. And if the unit has been in the 70 degree truck and I take it outside where it is 29 degrees, it literally takes it two hours before it reads the temp outside as 45 degrees.I don't need an $800 piece of equipment to tell me the temp and barometric pressure within plus or minus %20 of the actual value. This is a unit that is brand new.

If you're stuck between choosing a Leica and a Swarovski, and are leaning towards the Leica because it ranges AND you think you might be able to get by without buying a Krestrel, just go ahead and buy the swarovski. Because the weather aspect of the Leica is less than useless. (Literally, you can guess the temp and pressure more accurately than the unit)

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

I bought mine when they first came out I only use the ranging and degree finder . I love it I have ranged deer 1000 yards and targets 1500 no problem i love it but I have been out with guys with the swarovski and It did seem to work better and more consistent but I have no big complaints. Buy the kestrel it's a must and there's no way around it.

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

Thanks for all the info and damn me for reading this thread.

I went out today and tested out the Bushnell Fusion 1600 after reading this and the linked thread.

I took it outside and I was impressed!

I just ordered one off Ebay, was the cheapest I could find that would ship to me in Canada. Came to 700$ after shipping costs.

Re: Leica 1600 Rangefinder Review

I got mine in recently and I was not particularly interested in the temp/pressure readings, just the ranging ability and inclinometer. I havent had much time to get many extreme distance reads, but I was able to shoot it up a pipeline easement yesterday and got a 1836y read on a stand of trees/treeline and another 1910y read. Took a few attempts but I expected that since groups of trees arent terribly reflective...and I havent verified the distance yet either, but those trees were way out there. So far.....impressed. Love the size, weight and glass is very nice.

Good things to know. I'm fixing to purchase something
