Re: what are your groups at 300yds?
I finally got a chance to shoot my Marlin 980v .22lr @ 300yds
Rangefinder read 302 yds.
Marlin 980v, std weaver bases, grandslam rings
Tasco varmint/tactical mil dot 2.5-10x
Federal Lightning ($1.98/50) 1240fps (per box)
Off bipod, no rear bag
I have enough elevation in my scope to zero at 200, from there I was holding about 5.8 mils high for 300 yards.
I fired 1 7 shot group as light was fading. Wind from 1:00 to 2:00 @ 4-7mph, held 1 mil right.
7 shots-10" ctc, but one obvious flier Im attributing to a distinctly overpowered round. That round impacted 4" above the rest of the group. For the other 6 shots I had a 7" group that was about 6" wide and about 5" tall.
Overall I was very happy for the cheap ammo.
When I plug the data into my ballistic program I get pretty close to real-world data with a velocity of 1250fps and a bc of .125
I still need to bed/pillar bed the rifle, Ive got a DIP 25 MOA base on the way (damned awesome company from what Ive noticed) and then I'll try some actual "match" ammo.
Side note: My buddy and I found an AWESOME .22lr target/gong for all you other cheap bastards out there: standard round point metal shovel head. I had one with a broken handle, we whittled the handle to a spear about 3" below the metal, stabbed it in the ground convex-side to firing position. Being tempered it doesnt even dent, hits are very audible even at 310yds, and it measures about 9" wide by 11.5" tall. A little white spray paint and hits are easily visible at 310.
That is all,
Mike K
