I was looking at the Hog Saddle and reading about it, pondering getting one, I had read other people say it doesn't clamp down far enough to secure the McRee as it isn't as wide as some of the other Chassis (have not confirmed that as I could not find specs as to the jaw dimensions on their website)....but it dawned on me that I have an aluminum chassis that is mostly hollowed out in the fore-grip area. I drilled and tapped my chassis with 1/4" x 20 threads and attached it directly to my Primos Trigger sticks, but will work with most bi/pod/tri-pod setups with that thread size. Makes for a nice solid shooting platform and the trigger sticks are nice because it deploys quickly and can be set on un-even ground with a grip of the "trigger" Not a bad little set-up and saves a few hundred bucks. (not saying that it is a bad product and I would love to try one....but I already had a tap and a drill bit)

Good thinking Hog! Looks like it will work well.

Re: Tri-pod mount for McRee Chassis

That is a great idea. Hell - we use the PRS forend rest and their SLIK tripod - this seems like a more stable solution. Great idea. I have a drill and tap set down in the arms room. Guess what I'm doing my next day back to work?

Re: Tri-pod mount for McRee Chassis

I'd be a little worried about the threads getting pulled out... but hey if they did you could just put a steel insert in.

Re: Tri-pod mount for McRee Chassis

I was really surprised how stable it is, I will get back to you on the thread durability issue after I put it through its paces for awhile and see how it holds up.

Re: Tri-pod mount for McRee Chassis

I keep forgetting to measure the clamp dimensions of the hog saddle for you. As an idea if you like the idea of the saddle, a pic rail on each side of the mcree to beef it up a bit? I will measure soon!

Re: Tri-pod mount for McRee Chassis

I would be interested to know the dimensions and that would be a solid solution, I do have some extra rails that I ordered with the Chassis and didn't use. I am gonna run my home-made attachment for awhile and see how it works, but I still would like to know what the measurements are just out of curiosity and to take some measurements on the McRee and the rails to see if that would remedy the issue.

Re: Tri-pod mount for McRee Chassis

I clamped it down, then backed it off about 3 half revs for tension and got 1.620"

Totally clamped was 1.570"

I'd bet if you put a pic rail on each side where you would want the saddle you could get 'er done pretty easy.

Cool idea about adding picatinny rails. A few Army guy have told me that they just take a piece of isomat and tape it to the inside of the Hog Saddle to accommodate the thinner profile of the McRee.
It sounds kind of ghetto but they said it wasn't too big of a deal since they use the rest with multiple weapon systems. I'll look into making a pad that is 1/8-1/4" thicker to properly mount the McRee Chassis.

Keep us updated on how the tapped hole works out.
