I'm rather new, but have been reading a ton here. I know there is a broad range of answers to this question, but I'd like to know where some of you would START with this:

If you have $2k invested in a precision semi auto, in what price range would you BEGIN your search for an optic?

cal 5.56; usage range/learning precision shooting, but would like it to be "worry free" with respect to getting banged around a bit; shooting 200 to 600 yes.

The rifle has the best components I could find: Krieger barrel contoured by CLE, etc.

I can AFFORD to spend up to and into the range for a NF; if I could get away with spending $600 on a Vortex, I would.

Thanks.

Re: Scope price ranges for a given rifle

Personally I am a believer in good glass, I have had the same razor on several guns, from a R700 I built from take off parts that cost $300 for the entire gun to my present TRG 22. If you cant see it, you cant hit it.

I have never understood the whole relationship on if I spend X on gun I have to spend Y on optics. Buy the best glass you can afford that suits your needs. With optics there is a point of diminishing returns but you also get what you pay for.

Get glass you are happy with the optical quailty of and turrets that match the recticle. Check the classifieds here if you are trying to save a few bucks.

Clear as mud?

Re: Scope price ranges for a given rifle

For that caliber and shooting purpose, I'd look for a used NF 2.5-10X32.

Re: Scope price ranges for a given rifle

You might like a Bushnell Elite Tactical 3-12x44 FFP G2.
Viper PST 4-16x50 might be a little on the large size for your application
USO SN3 1.8-10x slimline (about the same price as a NF NSX)
SS 3-9x

Re: Scope price ranges for a given rifle

Vortex Razor HD is an outstanding scope and won't leave you wanting.

I watched a great review on the Bushnell. They beat the hell out of that thing. Looks like a great piece of glass for that price bracket. I've always been a big USO and S&B fan though, so I can't speak from experience about the Bushnell Elite.

Look at vortex. Nice optics, nice price.

Re: Scope price ranges for a given rifle

buy the best scope you can afford no matter what rifle it is going on, sooner or latter, the rifle will be sold/traded but you'll keep the scope to put on the new rifle.
buy once, cry once when it comes to scope.

Re: Scope price ranges for a given rifle

Attherange is exactly right buy once cry once you will regret getting something that doesn't have good glass and especially a turret that don't track back, I did that once and never again now I have nightforce and premier and had never had to worry about tracking. 100% confidence in my optics
