Re: government auction of brass

think of all those crimped primers you would have to remove.

Re: government auction of brass

I thought the government always auctioned off brass. In the late 70s I use to buy 223s at auctions when I had a commerical reloading buisness.

I used (and still have) an old Dillon RL1000 (forerunner or commerical version of the 1050).

It has a stage that swedges the crimped primer pocket. That's when I learned you CAN wear out sizine dies. I ended up buying carbide dies for 223 and 308s.

Used to go to a scrap metal dealer in Goldsboro NC and buy yellow brass and copper. They had pallets and pallets of spent military brass.

Four-55 gallon drums loaded to the top. Stacked up rook high. From 9mm to .20mm cases. Guy said they had to go through each and every barrel to make sure there is no live ammo left in it the lot.

If they found some they were to notify the military and someone would come out to dispose of it. EOD I guess.

Re: government auction of brass

I have been bidding on this stuff since around 2009, usually the stuff local to TX and OK. Haven't managed to snag one up yet.

Most of the time its 3,000 pounds or less that I am bidding on.

Re: government auction of brass

I know several dealers who make a livelihood of it. They buy in lots of 300 plus TONS! Crane comes to mind when I think of one of the big auctioners of milsurp brass.

Someone should organize a group buy.

Who would handle the $60,000 that they would need to scrape together for the deal? Then, who would handle the truck, driver, and fuel?

There's a lot more than most people realize to these auctions. You can't just go in and buy a tub of 5.56 brass. Usually, not in all cases, but usually there are multiple calibers mixed into each bin or 55 gallon drums within a lot.

In some cases there are 'ammo handlers' who presort the brass. This very well could be one of those cases. Don't know.

Re: government auction of brass

Just track down your local police range and ask about taking their spent brass. Most of the time, departments dont care about what happens to it. Dont just take it, but if you ask, alot of times you're taking care of a headache for the department.
