barnes .338 lm 265grain

Re: barnes .338 lm 265grain

338Lapua?
Use Retumbo, Rl-25, or H-1000.
I had to lean on it pretty hard to get 2800fps from this bullet...So will not share my loads. The bullet seems very sticky.

I got 2750fps out of the 285TSX with US869, but best accuracy was around MOA.

Im assuming you tried a different neck size? Ive seen in one of my books or something and even have a 364 - 365 - 366 - 3 different sizes for them

If you didnt what size did you use? Maybe i can try a larger size?

thanks

i dont understand how they could have nothing to due with pressure

---all hypothetical below this point---

if we tighten the neck size to lets say 10mm just for a nice round number

then we insert bullet that is 11mm we could assume the fit is very tight - it would therefor take a decent amount pressure to dislodge the bullet

whereas if we were to tighten the neck size to 10.5mm and then insert an 11mm bullet im assuming that it would be exerting less force upon the bullet to keep it lodged - therefor needing less pressure to dislodge the bullet

so if that is the case then we would not need to expend so much NRG for the original act of dislodging the bullet and knowing we only have X amount of NRG in the first place we could reasonably think that some of that extra NRG went into propelling the bullet forward - therefor no longer requiring us to hot load (as much) if we were to theoretically relive some of the tension that is being exerted upon the bullet in the first place

what do you think? and let me again ask if you did try different neck tensions? I know you said you have them but I am still curious if you experimented with them?

Thanks

Re: barnes .338 lm 265grain

I have tried different neck tensions in a large variety of calibers.
As far as peak velocity goes neck tension has no measurable bearing...Not guessing on that one.
In some cases neck tension can help tune velocity variation/spread. In something very precise like a 6mmbr/260 I do tune my neck tension. You will find no measurable affect on a 338 Lapua.

Just a little background (so you don't think I'm some Lapua nooby beating his chest). I have fair bit of experience with 338 rifles in everything from 338/06, 338 Win, 338lapua, 340Wby, 338Rum, 338 Edge, 338/378, 338/416R, and 338/408. I have been shooting the 338 Lapua since about 1985 or so and started shooting X bullets about the same time...Check my handle!

I too thought the 265TTSX would answer my long range needs and bought 20 boxes...While it certainly will work it turns out the 225gr Accubond (3200fps in the Lapua) remains the bullet to beat in every way. Plug the numbers into a ballistic program and you will see what I mean.

Best of luck!

Thanks alot for your help and the info you shared

Im still learning about reloading

My biggest requirement is a lead free bullet so those accubonds wont work unfortunately
