I am looking for an action that works best for a .300 wm build. preferably an action built specificly for the .300 wm. if there is such a thing.

Much respect,
-Sv

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

Buy this for $370

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/produ...3-9x40mm+Scope/

Sell the scope for $100 on a local forum and the barrel and stock for another $100 and suddenly you have a $170 receiver. Order a Criterion, Lothar Walther etc stainless barrel for $300, McMillan Stock for $498 and a Rifle Basix Sav-1 trigger for $85 and you will have a fantastic shooter for $1050.

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

Thanks for the replies. But not quite what I had in mind. This ones for 1500 yds. so it's going to cost a bit more than that. Atleast with any precision.

Much respect,
-Sv

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

Steel, any receiver built for magnums will be fine nothing special needed for 300wm. Remington,Winchester for a factory or a Defiance,Stiller or Surgeon would be good places to start for customs.

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

absolutely nothing wrong with a plaine jane remington 700 Long Action......worked for me and thousand here on the Hide

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

I like Winchester Model 70 Actions for my 300 WM 1000 yard target rifle.

I like the heavy "flat" action for magnums.

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

Defiance Machine actions are used by the top builders here on the hide like GAP and Black Ops.

What mine is built off of.

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

Ahhh I see now. Thanks for all the replies. Anyone have anymore insight for a .300 wm I am all ears.

Much respect,

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

Custom built Remington if you already have the Remington. Surgeon, Defiance Machine, others, and my favorite, Stiller will make a great rifle build. Here is a very short vid of a Stiller i built for myself at work.

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

The Pre-64 M70 is a beautiful action, and I had a .300MAG in one that would shoot sub 1/3MOA 3 round groups. It was a pretty nice rifle.

The safety system is good, the trigger is good, so really the only things to improve would be custom action type considerations (AKA scope base milled into action).

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

Surgeon 1086. Integral rail recoil lug - less variables, bank door solid

Is that that the 3 position safety? The model 70's have some of the fastest and smoothest chambering. I have a gunsmith here in Colorado Springs who could problably do that.

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

Steel...just call Chad Dixon and have him build you an ultimate 300wm. I am having one built by him right now. I am going with the LH Borden action, hart barrel#4, McM stock, J-trigger at 2.5lbs, etc...

I didnt come with this build, It was Chad, listening to me and how and what I hunted and how I was going to use the rifle. I built based on his advice and what I wanted...

I have a few remys and they shoot great but I just wanted to go to the next level, lol Always wanted a custom...I am just beside myself waiting. Hardest part of the build is waiting!!

Although it will make your rifle much louder and even obnoxious at times, a good brake will cut recoil in half and it'll be a bit easier on your shoulder.

btw I forgot to mention you're probably going to be better off with a barrel somewhere in the 26" range for a 300 win mag. </div></div>

You have in mind close to what I was thinking. What taper do you all recommend? I was thinking something a little heavier than M40.

Thanks so far I appreciate all the insight!

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

Yea I will use it for hunting. Weight isn't an issue for two reasons. The first one being I have a strong horse. The other is I am good for 120 lbs. for atleast 30 miles if I did decide to hoof it.

Yes I am looking for a 1500 yd. rifle but have no intention of shooting at an animal at that range. The primary usefor 1500 yds. will be hobby and a meat rifle as well for 800 yds. or less.

Thanks for the insight.
Much respect,
-Sv

This 5rd group is .895 outside to outside shot at 100 yards (subtract the bullet diameter and that is a .595 group), I didn't even follow my own advice. I used a factory .308 barrel cut and recrowned at 20", a Stevens receiver (gasp) and a Choate stock. Imagine what a handlapped barrel on a receiver bedded into a good stock could do. You don't have to spend alot of money to get pretty good results.

Please don't any of the Savage fans jump in and say that their Savage is as good as a GAP, APA, RWS, TacOps etc. custom because they are not. I have yet to see same hole consistency from a Savage that I have seen from several RWS builds, but the Savages are pretty damn good.

The Remingtons are a fine platform to build off of too, you just have to pay a gunsmith to install Remmy barrels. Good luck with whatever direction your build takes you.

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

Oh and btw I am a total noob when it comes to rifles, imagine what a competent shooter could have done with my Savage/Stevens Frankengun.

Re: .300 wm Action recommendation

That looks a lot like my group @ 300 yds. with a M24

I hear you. I thought I was the best shot in the world until I met my sniper instructor SFC.Thacker. Holy crap is all I can say. I won't even bother posting what he did as people would think I am FOS. There are some amazing shooters out there. 99% of shooter's practice on still targetry. This man can shoot the retina of a flee's eyeball at 200-600 yds. on movers. Known distance of course. I didn't think people like that existed until I saw it happen in person. Found out later he was S.O.C.O.M and got busted down for beating the piss out of a MP lol.

I need to learn more about the rifle itself. All I ever do is shoot rifles and never study them. One day I hope to be able to build my own entirely if the libs don't snag them all first.

Much respect,
-Sv
