My team is looking to replace my rifle in the near future. As a small team we do not have deep pockets for a custom gun.

Currently we are running Remington 700s and I was lucky to have one handed down from a retiring guy who put it into a McMillan stock. However, the agreement was he gets the rifle when it got retired. So now we need a new rifle.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to which model Remington 700 to purchase? I've shot the 700 with the Hogue overmolded stock but don't like it. After some inspection I noticed the stock bends and touches the barrel when shooting from a bipod. I found this is a common problem with those stocks from looking at reviews. I don't know we will be able to purchase a new rifle and stock. As I stated, we have minimal funds. Hell, we purchase a good portion of our own gear.

I've also been looking at the Tikka T3 CTR as an option. If there are other suggestions those would be appreciated as well.

Re: New rifle

a usefull response would require more info, what purpose, distance, expectations, optics

Re: New rifle

The rifle is for a law enforcement sniper. Needs to shoot sub-MOA out to 300 yards minimum. Optics are Leupold Mark 4.

Re: New rifle

If cost is not a issue go with a Tac Ops remington 700 rifle in 308. Cost is in the 4k range give or take.

I'd like to go that route, but cost is the issue.

I haven't been given a dollar amount; just told to find out best rifle based on performance vs. cost ratio. I was told the last rifle was bought for under a grand (rifle only).

Re: New rifle

Remington 5R Milspec. Aprrox 900 or so. EXCELLENT factory gun. Shoots very well. 5R loves the 175 grain pills.

Thanks, I'll look into it.

Re: New rifle

my sps v shoots sub moa to 600. and i got mine under 500 usd. for 1000 you can get it and a descent stock. 5r is a good choice tho. if u plan on keeping the stock

Re: New rifle

My SPS stayed around the half Moa mark, but I had the same issue with the hogue stock flexing. Anything in the Remington line up would be a great choice!

Re: New rifle

for a thousand this would be my choice of compromise:

http://www.impactguns.com/remington-sps-...7700842073.aspx

toss the stock and trigger

http://www.redhawkrifles.com/products/tactical-stocks/2092-02-remington-700-sa-a2-stock-black

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/220642/...-2-to-4-lb-blue

I take it you have rings for the scope, no reason for a sloped base for 300 yds

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/228687/...rt-action-matte

that would total under a thousand if you have a basic armorer who can put it together

the step up Remington models that come with reasonable stocks are around a 1000 (5R, PSS) but still have crap triggers and would need the scope base so end up more like 1300-1500

do you have a link for this 900$ 5R?

Re: New rifle

My choice would be the Tikka T3 CTR....if you can find one. My dealer said his cost was around $680, but they were backordered. He got me a T3 Varmint (23 1/2" bbl) for around $722 (cost). This gun shoots circles around my tricked out M700's, even in the factory stock. My only change is to install CDI bottom metal tonight and a AI magazine. The factory trigger adjusts externally w/allen wrench, and went down to 1# 13oz. Crisp w/no overtravel...and the Tikka actions are so smooth! You really need to handle one and compare to your M700's.

Re: New rifle

700 p gets my vote.

Or you could try convince them to spend some drug forfeiture money and get an AI AE mk3. Or get the guys to fundraiser.

Service life, downtime due to broken parts, and adjustable to multiple shooters could be used as arguments to get them to spend a little more now. You can replace almost everything on an AI with a phone call in a day or 2. Starting price without LE discounts are about $3300.

Go on gunbroker and when you find a 5R call the place that sells it so maybe a discount is available.

Mine was in the 900's. Perhaps 900 exactly was wrong.

Re: New rifle

I used a Remington AAC-SD .308 for through sniper school and on duty and it was an outstanding gun. Sub-MOA and the 20" barrel is great when you are trying to store it in a Vic or Tahoe and room is an issue. I did replace the stock but at $600-$650 you can afford to throw a stock in there for department pricing.

Re: New rifle

If you can scratch up the extra 600 I'd vote for the FN above that is one sweet deal.

Re: New rifle

Is it an LE/duty gun ? If so, contact remington LE sale division and see what kind of pricing they can offer. I have seen quite a difference in prices for duty weapons over the years depending on make, model, etc. Just an FYI. It may help. Good luck

Re: New rifle

Would your department consider coming up with a 700 action and you send it to a good smith like Roscoe at Louisiana Precision, SAC, Etc and have them true it up, screw a barrel on it, and put it into a McMillan stock.

May not work, but just throwing it out there.
