Fellas, I am wanting to get an AK. I know... I cringe at the thought of owning a filthy-commie infested piece of hardware, but I also feel the need to own one just because the back of my mind says everyone needs to own a (No holds barred) shoot at all costs SHTF rifle. So my question is 2-fold. Whats the better of the available AK47s? And my 2nd question is.. Should I forget the regular AK and just go RPK?

If you go AK go ahead and get the slide fire stock while you can to take advantage of the cheap commie ammo.....

if your gonna get a shtf gun my choice would be the fal. i know you want an ak but after having alot of each ill only get the fal from now on.

AKs are good SHTF guns, but for a dependable beater, I like my SKS. IMO, just as good as an AK for less money. Accuracy is not a strong point, mine is acceptable to 200m (about 5"), but the rifle has never failed to function no matter what I drag it through. Get an ATI adjustable/folding stock and you're pretty much set.

Im wanting a complete factory setup. No folder, no optics... Just a grab and go type of gun. Plus I like the look of an old school commie style AK.. LMAO. I think Im gonna rule out the RPK. Its gonna be heavy to carry. Whats the higher quality AK brands? Arsenal? Im not looking towards a Century import.. I held one today and it felt like it was stamped from soda cans.

I prefer the Maadi's. I even have a RPM (Maadi's rpk version). They are very accurate about 2 moa at 100 yards. The maadi's were made on original russian equipment that the russians gave egypt after they got their butts woopped.

I have a MAC-90. It's fine for what it is; a spare go rifle in a SHTF issue. lots of ammo and mags. I sits in my safe waiting.

Was very impressed with the Norinco 56S. The trigger was like glass and overall it was a very well made and accurate AK. I had more to say but the Daisy Duke mpeg above has me all hot and bothered.

End of the day, again, you can spend more money but the end product doesn't change much. I like Norinco, they work and don't add to the price to get a name. If money is not a big issue and you want one of the best AK platforms (even though folks here love to hate 'em) Redjacket made their name on AKs. They may be doing silly crap now, but their AKs are still some of the best around if you want to spend more for a name.

The draw to the ak platform is the x39 round (30 cal bullet but less weight/bulk/recoil than 7.63 nato). With the popularity of 300 blk i may have gone a different route. The ar platform is just more ergonomic. If you want cheap ammo forget the 74 - get a chrome lined bolt barrel and chamber and you can shoot cheap .223 all day long in a much more comfortable platform.

If you are really broke enough just get a ruger 10/22.

If you want an ak get one that has some balls (x39). My izmash akm conversion is probably my favorite gun to plink off hand with and i know it will run like the energizer bunny.

Yes... disregard my last comment about going AK74/5.45x39 ammo... It is bad stuff... really bad...
I only got over 4000 rounds of the stuff and it's not enough. So please refrain from purchasing anything dealing with this caliber as I hope to fulfill the required quantity for my arsenal

I like the SKS a lot. If you own one from China, though, it's a good idea to check out the trigger sear and make sure it hasn't been filed down for the US market. Quite a few of them were filed down by hand for a smoother trigger and as a result the sear might allow the hammer to slip into a chain-fire mode. There were several really bad range accidents. It's worth checking out.

Other than that, the SKS is a real tank of a rifle.

+1 for the ak74s. I picked up 1080 rounds for $130 shipped last year. The ammo prices haven't budged much either. You can get a decent made 74 from Atlantic firearms in the 500-600 range. Or just buy the 5.45 AR upper.

If you must own a 47 (most people should) I would go with arsenal.

Just a side note, stamped are a lot easier to get accessories for than milled.
