Hey Guys,

I finally got a chance to finish building my shooting rest. Should make testing rifles a little easier. It has full windage capabilities from the right or left. She weighs 22lbs., so she won't be blowing off the bench any time soon!!

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

Don't really know the cost in materials, as they were remnants from other jobs. The center is solid stainless and would be pretty expensive today. You could make the center section out of aluminum and fill with lead to keep the cost down.

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

Good looking rest. Does it also have an elevation adjustment?

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

That's some beautiful work. Kind of surprised it doesn't have fluted legs!

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

The back leg has a speed cam built in for elevation changes. Stay tuned for the fluted legs!

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

Is the top threaded for vertical adjustments? Did you harden the feet? Thinking of making more of these or just a one time deal? Sorry for all the questions but I like the looks of that compared to most out there.

Brad,

The center shaft is 1" in diameter and is threaded for vertical adjustment. The shaft(hidden) as shown in the pics goes to the bottom of the center hub. At least 3" of vertical adjustment is available. You just turn the mariners wheel to raise the top. The feet are not hardened, just stainless steel. The cost of the metal for the rest would be very expensive in today's market. Cost would be to high to build just one. Just a fun project.....

Onyx,

That thought never crossed my mind. The rough adjustment is only used during setup as I have an adjustable cam and a fine adjustment built into the rear leg. Not a bad idea though. Maybe next time.

Just giving you a hard time man, that thing looks beautiful! If I made something like that it would not be anywhere near that good looking.

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

Hey Guys,

What would be a reasonable price for this rest for Hide members only? Any thoughts.

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

Figure shop rate x hours to make + cost of materials + 25% = cost.
I think that would be fair, and if you want give guys on the Hide a break minus whatever percentage you can live with. But in the end you have to decide what you can sell them for. It looks great and I'm in the market for one if you decide to sell some of these let us know.

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

Why would he charge a shop rate + 25%?

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

I am thinking the +%25 is on the cost of materials only. Small businesses that I have been involved with mark up their cost of materials 20-30 percent. That way they can make a little $$ on the material sale, and it helps offset other misc costs that you cannot charge for. jmho

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

Making extra on the material is fucking bullshit. That's a dick move if I've ever heard one. I have plenty of buddies who run their own machining and construction companies. And none of them mark up materials. In this age when any consumer can find the costs of materials, why the hell would they chose a manufacturer / builder who over charges for material, especially when you can find an honest business that doesn't. What a joke.

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

isnt that what a shop rate is for? What misc cost would he have that "HE CANT CHARGE FOR?" Electricity? Sharpen a bit etc? I know and understand that everyone has to make a profit and put bread on the table, but NO business will make it if they Nickle and Dime people.

For Everyones info, I didnt ask the previous post to shit on this guys thread. I like the rest, and would love to have one. From what I see, I have a price set in my head on what I would pay for one.

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

You guys are too uptight. He ask and I threw an a little SWAG, glad everyone was able to get their panties in a wad though. And by the way, ask your business friends how they price their work, bet the contractors don't sell material that they buy at Lowe's or Home Depot for home contruction for what they buy it for. It's called profit, that's how business's grow, invest in new machines, buildings etc. It's the American way, like it or not.

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

I like the rest too. I think it's sweet, and would like to see how it works compared to a Farley.

Re: Custom Rifle Rest

Sorry Bolt Fluter, didn't mean to drag mud though your thread. It's a damn fine looking piece of equipment. Good luck if you start producing a few of them, I'll keep an eye out in case you do.
