What can be done about them?

In the past 2 years approximately I have had the same individual try to scam me 4 times on different occasions. Once at the grocery store and 3 times at different gas stations at all hours of the day.

It's the same story every time. "My car is out of gas and I need to get somewhere 100 miles away to do something important."

It makes me not want to help out anyone ever.

I politely give an excuse <span style="color: #3333FF">"Oh man, I don't have anything, sorry"</span> and am done with it but I keep an eye on them until they/I am gone.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

^^What he said^^

Keep it short and sweet and disengage from him right away. Don't give him an "in" to keep the conversation going.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

You have to be quick, you have to hit them up before they hit you up..

Right before they speak, be like hey can you spare a dollar?

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

I tell them..."Im a bit short, you stand right there til I get to the bank and cash a check. Ill be right back." When Im feeling mean I tell them to hold their breath til I get back.

Wonder if I could be charged with anything if one of them did and died?

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

I had this happen coming back from the mid mo match at Kingdom city gas station. I wait for them to give me their sob story and what they need/where they need to go and always I am always going the other way don't have any cash.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

Try this: "Funny, I was just about to ask you the same thing."

The look you get is priceless!

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

Yeah, someone's wife here solved that for me. (??? I don't think that came out right...??????)

When the scumsuckingbastards are walking up to me, I ask: "You got 5 bucks?"

Stops 'em dead.

They think they can ask me for money, so I ask it right back from them. Free country.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

Reverse psychology...tell em you got the cash but its in the back of the van and they have to get it. Or that you are willing to go 100 miles out of your way to take them to their destination if they will sit on your lap. Ask them if they are open to favors.

Most of them would probably say "yes" to all of that so then what do you do?

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

In the "hoods" were I usually work, everybody walking down the street asks for a dollar, while I am working. I used to be polite, now I do not care, and just tell them that it is dangerous for them to be so close to this jobsite and they need to keep moving.

A few minutes later you will see the same person come back from the local store with a 40.

The sad thing is, that they teach their kids the same thing.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

Also, they are too lazy makeup a story, they just ask for money. Like I owe it to them because I have a JOB.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

I stopped at a CVS in Atlanta on my way through for some emergency benadryl and a bum asked for money. When I told him no and tried to keep walking into the store he commented on my truck, how nice it was, and how I had to have money. I spun around, bowed up, and told him to get the hell out of there before I got to him.

You would've thought he was trying out for the 2012 Olympics.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

Maybe I am just an asshole. My usual reply is "shit happens" or "sucks to be you"......

The turning it on them might be a more humorous solution though...

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

I just say, "No" and keep walking. Those guys are accustomed to rejection.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

Sometimes I respond with a quizzical look and a "Han ji?" (Yes?) in Punjabi. That works pretty well.

Well, according to OWS, you do.

Well, it's a good thing I do not answer to OWS then.

At least not yet anyways.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

When I get the "Can you help me?", my reply is "As long as it doesn't involve money." One idiot said, "you can use a credit card" and I said "The same principle applies."

Feeding the truly hungry and needy is one thing. Helping some scammer so he can buy a bag of dope, or avoid getting a job is different.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

Treat each case on an individual basis, not all people are worthless POS that just want your money for drugs or booze. I have to admit I have met maybe two people in my 38 years of life that are not scam artist. The rest have been people who have owned homes with a wife and kids and all that shit , but shit happens. I help out the elderly not the ones who can work or are fatter than me. If you can curb worm then you can work doing something. Yes there are lazy people who want to be homeless and to them I say f:;k u. Get to work. But there are exceptions.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

I agree J, but those people are getting hard to find. Also it has been my experience that those are the last ones to ask.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

I get asked usually at gas station pumps for money. At nights the people who live near by line up at the gas station to get the food that they make during the day but don't sell. Some of the people need the money, others don't. Sometimes its pretty hard to tell.

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

Bums? Scammers?

SEND me money or I will make sure my family, my cousins, my aunt, brother, father and all their freinds vote for Obama

That 'bum' enough? Really, send me money, semester is coming to a close five days into May, and Obama took away my break pay. Yes, I saved a portion of my monthly stipend each month, but I am merely a disabled vet living on less than welfare, so can ya help a brother out? Will work for food and gas and car parts

Re: Compulsive Bums/Scammers

That's true Rthur , we have many curb worms down here.
