Just won a Mann Accuracy Device (paid too much but I wanted it) on the CMP Acution Site.

Its a Remington 700 action for a Kart 5.56 barrel. This is one of the Device's the Army used to test the accuracy of their 5.56 ammo, super tight chamber, excellent barrel, good crown. 19.5 inch barrel, 1.125 dia. at the muzzle.

An example, for a test round they used a 52 Grn Sierra BTHP, 25 grns of 3031, federal Cases, CCI 450 primers and were getting .19 to .31 Mean Radius at 100 yards. With the SS109 ball they were getting .31 to .61.

The puppy will shoot..........now what to do with it? I'm thinking of throwing it in a Stock and using it for F-Class or maybe just build a machine rest to test reloads for my other 223s.

I'll post better pictures when it gets here.

Re: Mann Accuracy Device

I would definitely go F class with that puppy. If you don't mind, how much did you pay? My brother has been looking at them.

Re: Mann Accuracy Device

$910

I set my limit at $600 but got in a bidding war and turned stubarn.

Another option is putting iron sights and clip guide and using it as an NRA Across the course gun, then I can use it in both HP and F-Class.

Re: Mann Accuracy Device

I was watching that auction as well. Should be an interesting build to say the least. Are you planning on re-contouring the barrel where it fit into their jig?

Re: Mann Accuracy Device

No sir, I'm not gonna mess with the barrel if I don't have to. I'm a believer in working on the cheapest part, so I'll make the stock to fit one way or the other.

From what I understand, when put in a stock the barrel shouldn't touch anywhere.

It's built into the barrel, just how I'm going to bed it I don't know right now. Have to wait tell it gets here and start playing.

Re: Mann Accuracy Device

Thats pretty cool. Didnt know that such a device existed. Im a huge fan of Kart 1911 barrels. I had no idea that Fred Kart made rifle barrels too. Interesting.

Re: Mann Accuracy Device

I can't say i haven't thought about buying one of those from the CMP

Re: Mann Accuracy Device

I just found a pretty good description of the use of the Mann Device in Hatcher's "Textbook of Pistols and Revolvers", 1935.

Anyway, a V shaped metal trough of steel is mounted on a concrete base. Elevation and Wind age screws are fixed to the trough.

A telescope is laid into the trough to get the trough "sighted in" then removed.

The heavy Mann Barrel (Hatcher calls it a cylindrical barrel) is laid in bottom of the V trough. Under recoil the Mann Barrel moves but the trough doesn't. For the next shot the Mann Barrel is laid back in the V, which automatically lines it up for the next shot.

The trigger is activated remotely of course.

There is no need for a recoil lug in this set up.

Simple enough.
