Hi folks I did some reading and didnt quite find all that I was looking for by searching the Hide so here it is. Im going to be gone for two years (serving a mission for the LDS church) and wont be taking my guns with me. Guns will be kept in my safe here in AZ and Im wondering how I should oil/grease overall prep my guns to be stored for two years.

As I said they will be kept in a safe with and Eva Dry dehumidifier (recharable desicant that will be periodically checked to ensure it remains fresh). Ive been cleaning using MC #7 and Kroil. I also have some weapon shield on hand that I use mainly on my handguns as well as tetra gun grease. So just looking to see what you all suggest to condition the bores and metal on my guns to prevent anything from happening like rust while Im away. I saw these although I dont know that they are necessary http://secure.armorholdings.com/kleen-bore/product396.html Anyways please comment especially if you have firsthand experience. Your help and input is greatly appreciated.

Re: Storing Guns for 2 Yrs Prep for Longterm storage

Ok ok yes I know its dry here Ive lived here my whole life but we do have monsoon season and I just want to ensure that when I come back my high end rifles arent going to have any issues. The way you worded that Chiller was quite creative though... Anyways I want to err on the side of caution. Also on my two bolt guns should I store them fouled with just a coating of oil either the Kroil or weapon shield in the bore or clean then lubricate? Again thanks in advance for help.

Re: Storing Guns for 2 Yrs Prep for Longterm storage

I think if you lube your bore and the outside surface of your guns with a good quality oil and have them in a safe with a drier unit you will be just fine. Good luck on your mission also.

Re: Storing Guns for 2 Yrs Prep for Longterm storage

Monsoon season aside a good coating of oil you will be fine.

Are your stocks wood? That might be of concern

Re: Storing Guns for 2 Yrs Prep for Longterm storage

Chiller, No wood stocks on the rifles Ive got an old single shot shotgun with a wood stock but thats it. My bolt guns are both in AICS chassis, I have a Benelli shotgun an 870 with synthetic furniture my metal frame sig and some polymer handguns. Thanks for the input so far though keep the suggestions coming.

Ive had that offer from quite a few folks

I fear they may receive too much love should I let people "store them" for me

Those look pretty interesting. Until I saw those I was thinking of using Boeshield T9. I really like the idea of stick it in a bag and be done with it. The only downside I see with using the Boeshield is that its a waxy film that I will have to clean off and it says it penentrates into the pores of the metal. Someone was discussing the Boeshield with me and said that it would require brake cleaner then soap and water to get the stuff off and Im just worried about taking my coatings off too. So another question does anyone know if Boeshield or these bags will affect Duracoate and cerakote finishes both my rifles are finished with those coatings. I emailed duracoat but havent heard back yet about using boeshield on it. Keep the comments rolling guys.

Heres some pros and cons

Boeshield
Pro...
Fairly easy to use
cheap costs like $12 for a can

Con....
Maybe messy??
Hard to clean off
Negative affect with painted finishes such as duracoat/cerakote????????? HELP on this one

Z-Corr Bags

Pro....
Super simple to use
seem to be extremely affective (I mean I think I could burry the guns in these bags)

Cons...

Expensive (<span style="text-decoration: line-through">At $10-$15 a pop its gonna cost me around $100)</span> It appears that the $10-$15 bags on midway use a velcro closure??? I checked Brownells and they say vaccum sealed bag and run $25ish so now the question is which do I use?? <span style="text-decoration: line-through">Now to be fair they will be protecting much more value than $100 so really its cheap insurance.</span> Even at $200 still cheap insurance but it makes me think a bit harder as to weather its going overboard whith protection I mean I do live in AZ and they will be kept in a safe cleaned and oiled so maybe just the velcro bags would be better.

Re: Storing Guns for 2 Yrs Prep for Longterm storage

I've used the zcorr bags to store rifles and handguns for 5+ years in a mid-west basement (not wet, but not AZ either) without a problem.

Glad to hear some positive input. Do you have the vaccum seal type or velcro closure? Also, can you comment on wether or not it'll do anything to my painted finishes.

Re: Storing Guns for 2 Yrs Prep for Longterm storage

I have stored old, blued, wood-stocked rifles and shotguns for a lot longer than 2 year in an indoor safe in Houston with no dessicant or dehumidifier. Just bores oiled and outsides wiped with a silicone cloth and I've never had a single problem.

Re: Storing Guns for 2 Yrs Prep for Longterm storage

Maladat the more Ive been thinking and researching Ive pretty much come to the conclusion that Im going to do just that. I think there comes a point of going overboard and doing the Boeshield or these bags might be a bit much considering my climate and the following fact I just remembered.....

About 5 years ago my grandpa left me his 30-06 when he and my grandma went on a senior couples mission for the LDS church. The gun was old and beat up stock broken in half anyways. Its spent all of that time under my bed or at the back of my closet and I havent noticed any additional (new) rust on it or corrosion. I dont recal ever doing a thing to it either so that pretty much sealed the deal for me. Clean the guns like normal light coat of oil in bores wipe down put in safe with dehumidifier come back in 2 years and get back to shootin

I appreciate all your help guys and I guess my title may have been a little missleading by saying long term since its not like its a really long time and its not like Im putting them down in some damp basement or something.

I have the velcro closure (which I think was the only option when I bought them). I don't know what it might do to painted finishes, as I was storing ARs and 1911s. Being a belt and suspenders type, I cleaned, lubed and wiped everything down with a corrosion inhibitor (don't recall what I used at the time), and then put them in the bags.
