My oldest boy wants to get a fixed power scope for his .243, and start shooting longer distances with me. I have looked and shot threw a Elite but not the SWFA SS. Is it worth the extra money( including new rings for the 30mm)or just get him an Elite? I'm thinking he will problably want something different in a few years, but then he will problably be able to buy whatever he wants by then.

Thanks for the help

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

I had an elite and it was pretty good but I don't think it compares to a SS. I would spend the extra.

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

The SS10X42HD is awesome. Buy once, cry once. Id say its worth spending the money now to get a quality optic. That way you dont have to take a hit selling another later to get what you want. I use my 10X42 out to 1000 yds and it tracks, repeats, and returns to zero without fail. I love it.

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

Never had any dealing with the SS but I have 2 Elite 10x and will say the are pretty durable and they track and hold zero. One is on a savage 308 bolt gun and the other is on a 223 AR. Buddy has one on his AR-10 and loves it. We have 800 yd range and its fine for it. Not knocing SS at all, just saying that the bushnell is hard to beat for $200. Good luck

This mirrors my experience.

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

I highly recommend the swfa scopes. I have owned both the moa and mil versions. For the money the 10HD is a great buy. It would be a very good learning tool as it is mil-mil ffp. The glass is excellent and they track perfectly. It is a good investment as you will not have to wonder if your scope is the reason for inaccuracies. I have used the elite 10 but was not happy with the darkness around the edges of the glass and the gobs of parallax at longer ranges. That was 6 years ago so maybe they are different now. Have fun, he's a lucky kid.

I like the elite, but i think i will try the SS and see what happens. Thanks for all the help guys.

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

Go SS if you get the mil/mil version that's new, if not I would go bushy mil/mil. Easier system to use when you have matching turrets to reticle.

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

The Bushy Elite with matching turrets is a solid optic for the money. I had zero tracking issues with the 2 I owned. I would buy another 2 in a heartbeat.

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

I was between the bushy and swfa 10x a while back and decided on the bushy. The bushnell is well build and repeatable. Never looked through or used a swfa but i hear good things. Don't think you could go wrong either way. The swfa does have an adjustable parallax which is nice feature and more internal elevation, 150moa compared to the bushy's 80moa.

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

Both are pretty good scopes. If your son wants to learn to shoot at longer distances, I would lean toward the SWFA SS since learning to recognize (and adjust for) parallax is a part of it. Having extra elevation adjustment range is also useful.
Naturally, I'd wait a little and go for this specific model:

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

How much of a deal breaker is it not having the parallax adjustment on the elite? When does it start to affect the shooter?

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

I chose the 10x Bushnell MIL/MIL sold by MidwayUSA. I thought it would be great on a 22LR. Nope. Paralex is set way to far out for the type of rimfire shooting I want to do. Moved the scope to a .308 --> .280 Ackley Improved --> .260 Rem and it shines at the +100 yard distances. Great scope for the money for CENTERFIRE rifles, but not for shooting 15-65 yards typical of rimfire shooting. Now I'm in the hunt for a good 22LR scope.

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

Ilya, that is the one I had in mind. I will get some Seekins rings, and hand down the Nightforce rings to him. A buddy just bought some Seekins, and now I have to keep up with the Jones. Plus they are some really nice rings well worth the money for them.

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

I just picked up a SS 10x, I really really like it. Opening the box I was instantly impressed, the scope is very sturdy and glass is clear. The parallax is a huge plus. If I had more time before buying I would have waited on the mil/mil version, but I am not unhappy at all with my purchase.

Re: Elite 10x or SS 10x

I have used both and like the ss better. The bushy is a good scope, nothing wrong with it, just like the glass a little better

For that much money get the Aadland rings. They are built like tanks. USOs and Aadland rings for this guy for life :-D
