Cleaning rod length?

Im new here and Im just wondering what length cleaning rod I should get. I have a 700 with a 26" barrel and I will be using either the Lucas or the Sinclair rod guide. I know Dewey makes 36, 40, and 44 inch rods.

Also, I have used Dewey in the past and I liked them. Is there anything else out there that I should look at? I would like to stay below $45.

Thanks,
Jon

Re: Cleaning rod length?

Tipton carbon fiber rod is what I use and like. nice and strong and I don't have to worry about any sleeve or coating wearing out over time on the rod itself.

I have a 24" barrel and use a 36" rod. Plenty of length with the guide rod.

Re: Cleaning rod length?

I prefer the Tipton as well. I have a 26" barrel and use a Pro-Shot bore guide.

Re: Cleaning rod length?

My rifle has a relatively high cheek rest, so I measured the overall length of the rifle(48") to determine what length rod to buy. At that length choices are limited, but I bought a two piece 52" coated Dewey rod and guide, that give me plenty of handle/knuckle clearance and works well.

Re: Cleaning rod length?

Wow, years ago I bought a Kleen Bore sectional cleaning rod for my AR-15, simply because it was exactly like the one I used in the Army, and that one worked well. About 5 years ago I got my first bolt rifle and the rod was not long enough for the 26 " barrel so I bought another Kleen Bore and just add another section or two when I need it. Works great and it is very portable.

Once while at the range I got a stuck case. I just put the rod down the barrel and hammered the care out. No harm to the rod. That's what I call useful cleaning rod. You can buy two of them for about $25.

You can spend more on a cleaning rod but you won't get a better one.

Re: Cleaning rod length?

I prefer NOT to clean my gun, but when I do I choose a Tipton carbon fiber rod. Get the 40"

agreed! make sure you take into account the stock comb height. the handle on the rod may run into the butt of the stock.

Re: Cleaning rod length?

I bought a Dewey 36" and kept scraping my knuckles across the stock, traded it out for a 44" and am much happier.

Re: Cleaning rod length?

I prefer the Tipton and use a 44" for both my shorter barrels and longer barrels.
