I am really stumped right now, and could use some input before I lose my mind. We just submitted a new ammo purchase order several months ago for the upcoming year. Our team uses Hornady 168 grain AMAX, and have for the past 8 years. One of the things we like to do is put 2 rifles on the line, and shoot the chrono just to get a ball park on a new lot of ammo. In 8 years of shooting this ammo, the consistancy has been scary. I've never seen more than a 20 fps difference in these past 8 years. Well this new lot is F'n possessed. We set 2 AI's on the line and shot 20 rounds a piece. We are seeing huge inconsistancy's in this ammo, like 100 fps differences from box to box. We thought that we had a bad chrono at first, so we shot through the second with the same result. We then moved back to the last lot of ammo that we are currently deploying, and flat lined numbers, right where they should be. I have never seen this with our particular ammo, any thoughts would be much appreciated, but I do believe we receieved a bad batch of ammo. Wanted to reach out before I call for a refund, I've been known to be a dumb ass from time to time. But me along with several other sniper instructors cannot find another resonable explanation.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Bad Lot???

Is this by chance marked Hornady Superformanace? Any blown primers or pressure issues? What did the groups look like?

I fired 2 boxes of 178gr BTHP super performance throug an AE. No primer issues here.

Re: Bad Lot???

Any company can have a bad run, I'd call them ASAP so you can get a engineer on the phone and give them your data.

STAY AWAY FROM THAT STUFF!!! I had EXACTLY those issues with two different orders and two different lots of Superformance. I've posted on here about my extreme hassles I got from Jerry's Sports Center in getting the bad ammo returned. Hornady did end up buying it back from me, after a 2-month ordeal. Blown primers and extreme pressure marks from the ejector on my Sako TRG-22 (when I still had it) were on the brass. I sent it all in to Hornady as part of the proof of what I was experiencing. They did their own "test", which I expected them to do, and then bought my entire stock, without any further ordeal. Run, don't walk, from this ammo.

Re: Bad Lot???

It is standard AMAX, not super. Lot # is all the same from box to box. Groups are good, just changed POA, POI. I concure with a bad run of ammo from tume to time, just have never seen it with our Hornady. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't over lookung something.

Re: Bad Lot???

We have always had great results with Hornady as well. I think I would still call them and discuss it. I think you will find them very responsive.

Be safe.
