Got a Tac338 action coming from Stillers.I am thinking of building a 10 or 11Lb hunting rig and for target shooting. ether in a 338 Lapua or Norma Would that be to light.I have a 300 Rum and the recoil of that does not bother me to shoot and that's with out a brake but it will have a brake when William gets done with it.The 338 will have a brake to.

Re: 338 LM how light would you go

I have a 338 that weighs just under 13 pounds with the scope and bipod. It is a handfull shooting the 300 grain bergers. I dont think i would want one much lighter.

Re: 338 LM how light would you go

How does it compare too the 300 Rum for recoil.

Re: 338 LM how light would you go

I just finished a carbon wrapped 338 Edge in a McMillan Hunter stock. The barrel was a Rem Varmint contour and finished at 26" prior to the brake. Weighed maybe 8-9 lbs. The owner said it was a cadilac to shoot. Just dont know if he's saying it's low recoil or feels like a cadilac hitting you in the shoulder

Re: 338 LM how light would you go

I have a AR-30 they are 12.3lbs. I really think it is the muzzle break that helps tame the beast.

We modified my AR-30 and the butt plate is now just an aluminum plate. My 300WM has a opps inc break on it and while it is good I would not dream of shooting my 300WM without the super soft pad on the stock.

Re: 338 LM how light would you go

I guess that would depend on its purpose, I have a 338 ultra with carbon fiber barrel that only weighs 7.8 # with scope. It has a very good break so the recoil is about what a 30-06 is.

Dead nuts accurate.

My TRG42 is light, but is a JOY to shoot with 300smks @ 2700fps. It has the NEAR brake on it. Meanwhile, my partners 20lb+ 338 with APA fat bastard, 300smk@2750fps hits much harder than mine.

A good brake and a soft buttpad will go a long way.

Re: 338 LM how light would you go

Don't overlook the carbon fiber barrel.

got a 6.5mm barrel from Proof Research for my .260 Rem and I don't know the weight but with a 26" barrel+break sendero contour with scope and bottom metal it weighs less than an m16a2. If you get the right break it'll make all the difference.
They're pricey though. but since your building a .338 and concerned about weight instead of cost I would definitely check them out.

Are they worth it? So far I would say yes, one of the most accurate weapons I've ever shot.

Re: 338 LM how light would you go

I have shot a tikka 300 win mag that hurt compared to my lapua.
But it is still hard to stay on target after recoil. It doesnt hurt but it does hop a little. That is what I think is difficult to control on a large bore rifle that is light. I would almost rather pack the extra weight. I also think that for the cost of a carbon wrapped barrel, a guy could lighten his rifle in other ways and still come out real close if not as light as a carbon wrapped barrel. I say spend the money some where else. I am not sure it is worth it.

Re: 338 LM how light would you go

I appreciate all the input I can get.I would really like to stay as light as i can.I've all ways loved the magnums and the recoil from them has never been a problem for me.I'm 6/4" so maybe that helps. But also would like to be able see the results through the scope.Besides the shooting I will be doing is not like shooting at Williamsport 1000yd club ten min ten shoots when i decide to do that i'll build a 17Lb'er.I would really like to here from the people who hunt with there 338Lp or norma and what the weight of there rigs are.

Re: 338 LM how light would you go

I plan to hunt with mine. I weighed it at benchmark and it is 13. 5 pounds. My scale at home said 12.7. At 650 yards it was difficult to stay on target with the scope cranked up to full power. And mine is a 29 in barrel. After 48 rounds in two days my face actually hurt from the cheek rest. But I kinda like it.

Re: 338 LM how light would you go

I hunt with mine. Got the stiller tac338 action with a 22" barrel. have not chrono'd yet, but DOPE says 2650. Gonna work up a new load with 300 smks this summer and plan to load it a little hotter. Put it in an mcm A3 stock. With a HDMR 3.5-21 scope, I think it weighed in at 12 pounds. Very manageable hunting. And the break makes it kick like my 308. Get a good break.

You dont need a super long barrel hunting. Like you said, if you need a 17lb f class rig or something, buiold one for that. this is a hunting rifle, keep it light and compact. This thing lights out to 1000, but I would prob never take a kill shot at further than 7-8 hundo, and in all reality if you are a decent hunter, most shots will be closer than 300, and this thing hits like a hammer. Too many variable to trail meat for me at extended ranges. Life or death situation? sure all day any day. Or if its a big bull elk...lol

My point is, a 338lm performs just fine with a short barrel.

DT

A-Hull I seen your stick on the benchmark thread. Nice,Thanks a lot guys appreciate the help.Any more guys out there that use the 338Lm or Norma for hunting. And whats the weight of it.

Re: 338 LM how light would you go

A guy built a light weight 18" barreled 338 LM as a joke. He would bring it to range and ask people to shoot it. I did, twice, it was not a pleasant experience. Don't go that light...

Did it have a decent muzzle break? Im guessing it didnt.

And not that it matters. While hunting you might get one or two shots off all trip. Hopefully just one. And with all your adrenaline, you wont feel a thing.

My brother in law uses a bolt 460 hunting with a 22" barrel and open sights. Plenty of rifle and kick, and very light.

Important thing to remember while hunting: you never notice anything but the weight of the rifle as you hike it all over the mountain. NEVER the recoil as you fire at your animal.

I think a 20" 338LM would be the cats meow for a hunting rig with plenty of knock down power balanced with light weight.
