There was a post about brownells carrying the TAC-21 Chassis for the Rem 700 short action. I have been wanting to get my mits on one and try it out. Soo put down the old visa card and lit her on fire. Build is as follows.

Rem 700 SPS Tactical, Picked it up local had 20 rounds fired. Came with a Nikon Monarch 4-16x40 side focus and sat in some leup std rings. Shot 2 5 shot groups as it sat for a baseline. The a few groups in an HS Prec PSS stock. Using factory FGGM 168 ammo.

Tac 21 Chassis, Brownells only offered black and with the top safety cutout.

Cav Arms A1 length stock, 1" shorter than a standard AR A2 stock as you know. Replaced Cav's shitty trapdoor assembly with one off a proper A2 stock for a nice fit. Almost went with the PRS but its not needed with this platform.

Magpul MOE grip, simple and functional

Leup Ultra High Alum rings. I wasnt sure what it would take to get a scope where it needed to be on this but you have to look at it like mounting a scope on an actual AR cause any lower than this would be unusable I think.

Nikon Monarch 4-16x40 SF optic, figured I would use it all the way through as it was used for the first groups. This is also true with the trigger on the rifle. The only thing changed is the stock/chassis and optics mounting.

OK to start there are some short comings on the chassis.

#1. The side safety is a nice thought to save some cash on a new trigger but its damn near useless. If you go with this chassis get the filled side and go with a bottom safety trigger.

#2 Sling attachment, while adding parts is possible for sling attachment it does not come with anything readily. Theres tons of options in this area and most will work fine.

#3 Factory bolt is not as accessible as it should be. I have a bolt with a handle installed by dan in AK and it feels great with this chassis. Will post a pic of factory and it for your comparison. I think even the addition of a badger knob it would help but for the price of a tig'ed handle you might as well go that way.

Initial range trip today I was disapointed at the 100 yard groupings. I might have to contribute that to a new platform and not being 100% comfortable with it. Next time will have a better scope mounted and get a bit more trigger time on it. As it sits right now there was no accuracy increase like there was when I mounted the same gun in a HS Prec Police stock. The brochure mentions a V-block mounting system but it does not look like it has it. Its round bottom on the inside so there may be some stress when torqued. I think with some skill I can bed this action in the stock but gonna have to look it over pretty good. When the action is inside there is a bit of room above the top so bedding should be able to be done yet be very tricky.

I did swing down to the 500 and shoot some prone with it and my other 308. I was a bit more comfortable with it at that point. Was able to make some good hits at 500 by guessing the drop and adjusting. Didnt go to 1k cause I dont think the optics have the adjustment in them even with the 20MOA built into the chassis, and I didnt feel like dicking with the wind today. Even though its great practice to shoot in the wind and figure things out I didnt wanna mess with it.

    TAC-21 cost
    Chassis $820ish
    Mag $65
Stock with buttplate and bufer tube $45-$55
    Grip $20
    $960 total

    McM A5 Adj Cost,
    Stock $725-$750
    Badger DBM $350
$1100 plus bedding if you dont do it yourself.

    Used HS PRec Stock $200
You save a bit of cash over the A5, you also save a bit not having to buy the rail.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

I'd like to see some more pics of the gun. There is a large difference when shooting in when you feel comfortable and not. The more comfortable you are with it the better I'd say you shoot.

    PICS PICS PICS please!

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

Here are some group shots from the factory SPS stock
    img0461.jpg

And from the TAC 21 Chassis.
    img0453.jpg

Going to mount a better scope and add a trigger to the mix on this. Also shoot it a bit more to get comfortable with it before I call it a game.

I know this one dont quite fit the group shot criteria but am going to post it anyway.
All that was done was take the SPS out of the hogue stock and torque it into a HS PRecision stock. The accuracy is there in this rifle/ammo combo so hopefully I am able to shake it out with the chassis.

please keep the info coming, I've been really interested in one of these! I'm trying to decide between a manners T-4A with the mini chassis or something like this. Thanks!

At this point I would say get the manners, Hopefylly a scope change and more trigger time in the platform will work it out. Got a plan for bedding but its gonna be tricky. Will definately take pic's of that cause its either gonna work or glue the damn thing in with a mechanical lock.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    Update,

So put on a Leup VXIII long range optic this trip. Took it all apart and checked the torque on all the bolts.

Here are 2 5 shot groups out of 12 rounds, the first two were getting the rifle on paper after mounting the different scope.

First groups flyer was the 4th shot and was called cause the X-Mark pro trigger is complete shit.

There might be hope for this rig yet.

On a side note I have blood rashes from the AR15 stock so will look into a butt plate for the stock that does not have little points all over it. Getting more comfortable with the rig but still sort of awkward. I might order a PRS and give it a shot as it has a flat that may be a little more forgiving on a rear bag.

Next step is to bolt up my XCR LR Tactical 308 and see if it shoots as well or better than it does in the pillar bedded McM A5 its in.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

PRS arrived today and so did a Jewell top safety trigger. Turns out the Jewell safety lever is a tad higher than the factory and binds on the cutout which means that essentially a top safety Jewell will not work with it and I shoulda went ahead and got the bottom safety. Going to re-bed my XCR LR tactical I'n the mcm stock so guess it will get a Jewell switched out finally for the factory 40x trigger.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    anything new on this?

looking to see how it compares to the XCR.

I have a long action, so i'm SOL. but maybe for a future build...

it really does look diff, and more like an AR15 which I shoot great.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

A few questions and I apologize in advance if I missed something obvious:

    1. What mags are you using ( I don't like to ass-u-me)
    2. What trigger did you use initially?
    3. Would you post more detailed pictures of the chassis?

    Thanks

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

Hello, all. I am a new poster to these boards but I have been reading the posts here for some time. I am currently planning a build and review of a new weapon mounted on the MDT Tac 21 system. I know information online is currently somewhat limited so I wanted to be sure to document as much as I can so more people can read and see the build process and finished product. I am focused on keeping this rifle fairly economic. To date, here is what is planned:

    *Remington 700 VS .308 (heavy, 24" barrel)
    *Millett 6-25x LRS target scope
*Ergo grip (similar to that found on PSG-1)
    *MagPul PRS stock
    *Badger Ordnance bold knob
*Muzzle brake (not necessary, I know, but I want the barrel threaded anyway for the eventual application of a legal suppressor). I'd like an Armalite AR-30 brake but Armalite's site seems to crash whenever I try to order it. I have been impressed with Armalite's brakes in the past but may have to go with a Badger which I still think is good.
    *Harris bipod

If anyone has any suggestions I am pretty open to anything. My brother moved to New York and gave me his Rem 700. He told me not to ding up the original stock (which I admit is rather beautiful) so I told him I'd just get a new platform and the MDT Tac 21 doesn't seem to be getting much attention yet so I thought I'd give it a whirl. I'll take pictures of the process from start to finish and will answer any questions you have. All the best, folks. Safe and happy shooting.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 Build</span>: Day 1
The first thing I did when starting my build was disassemble the stock weapon and begin a thorough cleaning. My brother kept this rifle very clean but I always like to make sure I know what I am dealing with. Small buildup of carbon in a few places but nothing serious. Original rifle is shown in picture with Badger Ordnance bolt knob and Harris bipod. Next photo shows basic disassembly. The final step for today is blueprinting the rifle bolt before I ship it off to Badger Ordnance to have them install the knob. The new Badger is shown beside the stock bolt to show the difference in size. (I always send things like this to the experts rather than risk personal failure and jeopardizing the weapon.) I used a mix of higher-grit rubbing compound in conjunction with a micro-mesh finishing paper for the blueprinting. See photos for current progress. (I used a macro lens for close up shots, sorry about the yellow hue from the overhead light. I did increase contrast to give a better visual.) Most my information on blueprinting came from friends and online sources. The best online source I found is: Youtube - Rifle Bolt Blueprinting The remainder of the action will be professionally blueprinted if necessary.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 BUILD:</span> Day 2

The Ergo "sniper" grips arrived today and they are better than I was expecting. I must say I hate how overused the word "sniper" is these days. These grips are very similar to those found on H&K's PSG-1. I know Ergo has gotten some great reviews in the past but I'm always a little pessimistic about the results when trying a new product. I like the slightly canted angle of the grip (not too swept back but certainly not completely verticle). The grip fits my hands perfectly which is nice because I have rather small hands (har har, laugh it up) and I like to have a full, comfortable grip when shooting. Also, the grip can be removed from its base if necessary by the simple removal of a nut and bolt in case the need arises. Also, I have continued to slowly and carefully blueprint the bolt lugs. I figure I'll check its grouping before determining if it will need more work at a later date. The bolt will be sent to Badger sometime in the next week. Hopefully it will arrive at the same time as the MDT TAC 21 platform. The new rifle scope should arrive before the weekend. When I figure out how to post pictures (sorry, better with rifles than computers) I'll edit these posts to include them. I always like to see a full start-to-finish report and review of projects and products so I want to extend the same courtesy. Feel free to message me with any questions. I have read other posts on how to post pictures and I included the http address but it's not working. I'd appreciate the help.

PS - I got a response from Armalite (finally) and they say that they do not install brakes themselves. The AR-30 brake is available for approximately $172 through their sales department, extension 115. The part number is 30130000KIT. It was also mentioned I can purchase it online but their site continues to crash my computer. Not sure why. Maybe I'll try it with Firefox.

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 BUILD:</span> Day 3

The new Millett 6-25x 54mm target scope arrived today. It is bigger than I had anticipated but I got it for a significant discount from a friend who has heard about my project. Wanting to keep this project as economic as possible I felt it was a good optic system which would serve my purpose well. Until the MDT TAC 21 platform arrives and the bolt is returned from Badger Ordnance there isn't much I can do with this for now. So, I spent the rest of the day sanding a Bushmaster 97S down and preparing it for some Duracoat (Tactical Desert Beige). That is another project which won't be finished for another week or two. I'll post updates about the MDT system as it becomes available.

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 BUILD:</span> Day 4

I've spent the day working on reports for grad school and getting some other stuff done around the house. Wanting the TAC 21 to arrive at the same time as the Badger bolt I ordered the platform today through Brownell's at under $900 including shipping. All that remains is securing the MagPul PRS stock. If anyone has an extra one laying around (or one you want to get rid of) let me know. I'll keep posting pictures as they become available.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 BUILD:</span> Day 5

I mailed the Remington 700 bolt to Badger Ordnance today (Monday). The turn around time should be about 2-3 weeks which is longer than I want but I am also patient. In the meantime I might put a Tactical Desert Beige coat of Duracoat over the TAC 21 platform when it arrives. I guess it depends on timing. I'll post pictures whenever a new phase is complete.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 BUILD:</span> Day 6

Purchased a MagPul PRS stock on eBay for $209 including shipping. I hadn't anticipated needing to purchase an AR-15 buffer tube (extension type, not collapsible) but it is not included (lame) so I am picking the necessary parts up from Brownell's. The MDT system is in Iowa right now, on its way to Washington. I'll have pictures as the remaining parts begin to arrive. I'll have full pictures of the build and finished product as soon as possible.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 BUILD:</span> Day 7

I ordered the necessary parts (AR buffer tube, various bolts and screws, etc.) from Brownell's today and they should arrive within a week. The final part to arrive will most likely be the Badger knob affixed to the Rem 700 bolt. In the interim, I might give the parts a duracoat finish.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 BUILD:</span> Day 8

The MDT TAC 21 platform arrived today. I am still waiting on the buffer tube and MagPul PRS stock (as well as the Badger Ordnance bolt knob return) so I can't get the whole thing built. First impressions of the system is that it is a bit smaller than I had anticipated but that's okay. The finish on it isn't terrible but will probably not hold up to a lot of abuse in the field. Because I have the weekend before the remaining parts show up I am going to put a Tactical Desert Beige Duracoat job on this thing to keep it protected (and make it look pretty cool in the process). If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. I'm doing this build to let people know how good the product is so don't be a stranger. One criticism I have about the system (and this isn't really significant) is that the Ergo grip I ordered won't fit onto the system very well. The mounting lug on the weapon is a bit too thick (or the Ergo grip is a bit too narrow) so I will have to shave down the inside of the grip a bit. Still, should only take a couple of minutes and will ensure a nice, tight fit.

This is a picture of the box it came in, not real exciting but I was kinda impressed as to how professional the packing job was.

    018.jpg

This image shows the system all lined up. I am getting it ready for sanding with some 400 grit and then wiped down with alcohol and other degreasing agents before the Duracoat goes on.

    020.jpg

This is the issue with the grip I mentioned above. Not a real issue, but rather unexpected. Maybe it's more the fault of the Ergo grip.

    022.jpg

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

If that is anodized, don't sand it. Coarse anodizing gives good "tooth" for the finish, and an overly-aggressive sanding can eat right through the hardened anodized layer

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

MDT TAC 21 BUILD: Day 8 (Part II)

I finished with the Duracoat. I'll post the pictures here. Thanks for the advice Darren but I gave the parts a good rubbing down with the abrasive pad included in the kit. I've never used Duracoat before but I did an okay job. Thanks for the advice though. I'll be sure to consider that next time (I had already started by the time I got the good word). So, these parts will cure over the weekend and I'll start assembling them as the remaining parts arrive.

    023.jpg

These are the parts after sanding and cleaning.

    025.jpg

These are the parts about halfway through the job. I will say that the degreaser that is included with the kit leaves something to be desired. In the future I will stick with alcohol and other degreasing agents which I am very familiar with. It was their kit though, so I used their product. Overall I am happy with the finished product.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

Looking good. Will be nice to see the assembled rifle. I'm thinking of using this chassis for a spare barreled action.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

I'm liking it so far but won't be able to give it a full review until the bolt returns from Badger Ordnance. The shipping time was about four or five days so it showed up rather quickly. If you do end up getting one I'd like to see your build.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 BUILD:</span> Day 9

I got home from the mountains today and spent the first part of the evening getting the system put together. I am still waiting on the stock and a few other pieces. The Duracoat worked out well and I think I made a good choice. I'll include a picture of its current stage as well as a picture of my Bushmaster 97S which isn't complete yet either. I've just been fooling around with it trying to figure out the best layout for it. I hope you enjoy it. More photos and reviews to come.

MDT TAC 21 system as it is right now. Almost done and I think it's looking pretty good.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 BUILD:</span> Day 10

The buffer tube arrived sometime this weekend and I finally went down to check the mail. I gave it a quick install as well as putting back in the magazine release (which I removed for the Duracoat process). Now I'm just waiting on the Badger Ordnance bolt knob and the MagPul PRS stock. Then I'll just have a bit of tuning to do before hitting the range. I'll wait for the Armalite muzzle brake until my schedule frees up to run it to the smith.

    009.jpg

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

Why do gunsmiths make so much money if all you need is rubbing compound and sandpaper to "blueprint"??????

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

There is actually a lot more to it if you are going to blueprint the entire action. The bolt itself is rather easy. If I decide to have this action blueprinted I will be sending it to someone with a lot of experience. There is a good thread about it here on snipershide somewhere and that can answer a lot more questions.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 BUILD:</span> Day 11

The MagPul PRS stock arrived today and I installed it. The weapon is looking pretty close to being complete. The 10 round box magazine (or maybe a few) will arrive before the bolt is returned from Badger Ordnance. Then I'll be ready to zero and give a review of both the full build and the accuracy of the platform itself.

Pretty sure you just posted a pic of something pretty illegal. Not allowed to have a Vert fore grip on a handgun. totally wrong if you have an SBR though.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

Much appreciated. I talked to a LEO buddy and he said it was only illegal if permanently affixed. I have never stored the weapon as such (never shot it that way either, just a new foregrip for another project) so I believed I was in compliance. Good looking out. It seems even LEOs and lawyers don't actually know what exactly the gun laws are but I of course like to stay in compliance. Just got some bad information from a source who I thought knew the rules. Double and triple check might be the lesson for the day. Thanks again.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

The current 97S. New retention pins are on the way, the original plastic ones were giving me some trouble. Stripping can be a problem as the bolt is shorter than the standard AR-15/M16 and the weapon does not include any manner of buffer retention pin. This means you basically have to take both pins out to disassemble the weapon or you start bending the buffer spring. I am going to do a full M4 build from the ground up, something I have always wanted to do and now I have the time.

    003-2.jpg

The MDT TAC 21 will be complete as soon as the bolt arrives. Brownell's is back-ordered on AICS .308 short action magazines at the current time so I'll have to find another source. I suppose there is no real rush though. I am in the middle of mid-terms anyway so I don't have the time to hit the range. I'll post more pics as they become available.

    <span style="text-decoration: underline">MDT TAC 21 BUILD:</span> Day 12

The bolt arrived from Badger Ordnance two days ago but I have been busy with some different assignments. Badger did excellent work and I am very happy with the results. If there was room for improvement I wouldn't be able to tell you where it would be. Now I just need to wait for the AICS magazines to arrive and I can go and get zeroed. Again, any questions you have please feel free to message me and I'll answer anything I can. I'm very happy with how this project turned out.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

Nope. There is a take-down pin at the rear of the assembly housing (you can notice it in the photo). Just pop that out and the stock slides off. Then just remove the bolt as normal.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

Hello, everyone. Sorry about the lack of updates. Things have gotten a bit crazy in my world over the last few months. My stepfather got sick and then passed away after I finished a new grad cert in terrorism studies and I am now rushing, doubling my workload and trying to finish a Master's degree in Intelligence Analysis before returning overseas (and hopefully completing a second MA in Intel Ops) or jumping into OCS before I get too old.

As for the MDT-TAC 21: There haven't been any updates as to equipment (I did paint "Kafir" in small Arabic script on it, the Arab word for "infidel" which I enjoy). I'll be zeroing tomorrow and I'll try to get pictures and hopefully some video. I don't have an AICS .308 magazine yet but that's okay, I'll order it soon now that range time might be feasible. Sorry to keep you all waiting. Merry Christmas to you all. I hope Santa leaves you some new weapons under the tree and some ammo in your stocking. God bless.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

I took the rifle to the range and zeroed but the range was only set up for 225 meters (sorry, this is Washington and there are trees everywhere). The rangemaster didn't want to set up targets at 200 meters so I had to zero at 100. The groups were tight but not worth taking pictures. It was only 100 meters. If I can find a range with a longer range I'll get some photos posted. Currently I am waiting on a new memory card for my camera so I can film a video for youtube and I'll post the link here as well.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

    That's a great looking AR-10!

All kidding aside, it looks great. Top Rail included, can you use AR stocks and grips, what's not to like? Only thing I see where someone might complain is it looks like an AR-10. Which to me is a compliment.

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

Since it is aluminum, why not anodize the bits? Strip the black off and anodize. I want mine for target shooting, so I was thinking of anodizing it red. How would that hold up to heat off the barrel?

    Re: TAC 21 Chassis Review...

To The Top, Can I get an opinion on Anodizing Aluminum?

This is a question I would like to know also as to weather a xlr stock will fit a tac-21
